DeSean Jackson says Rob Ryan's comments were "uncalled for"
Jeff McLane, Inquirer Staff Writer
Michael Vick, who had choice words for Rob Ryan in training camp after the Dallas defensive coordinator took a shot at the "all-hype" Eagles, took the high road on Wednesday when Dallas-area reporters rehashed Ryan's August comments.
But DeSean Jackson said Thursday that Ryan's words were "uncalled for" because he was a coach and the Eagles wide receiver wouldn't have the opportunity to give Ryan "a shot" for saying "something crazy."
"For a coach to really say that, it's hard for me to kind of respect that because the coach is not really out there playing," Jackson said. "He's doing a good job of calling plays, putting his defense in the right position to stop the offense. You know, as far as the defensive coordinator to predict that, that's unheard of, uncalled for.
"It'll be good if his players said that, then I could I understand that. We're out there on the field with him so I would able to get a chance to get a shot at that player if he said something crazy. But for a coach, it ain't like I can run on the sideline and tackle the coach or run past him and score a touchdown."
The two teams face off for the first time this season Sunday night at Lincoln Financial Field. Both squads have had disappointing starts. The Eagles are 2-4 and the Cowboys 3-3, but the Eagles' slow start has generated great interest around the league because of the "Dream Team" roster they assembled.
Ryan mocked Vince Young's unfortunate July comparison between the Eagles and the 1992 U.S. Olympic men's basketball team and after the team became the toast of the NFL during the preseason.
"I don't know if we win the all-hype team," Ryan told reporters then in a thickly veiled shot at the Eagles. "I think that might have gone to somebody else, but we're going to beat their ass when we play them."
- @CitizenDick: you're not the sharpest knife in the drawer, are you? buddy won a ring with chicago and rob won two with the patriots. nice try skippy
oliver north - And Andy has one with the Packers. Sooooooo your point is exactly what? CitizenDick: Is correct in that neither coach has a ring as a head coach but Rob hasn't ascended to the head coach as of yet and Buddy couldn't even win a playoff game as a head coach and he had the best defense in the league and a dynamic offense. Man I can still see Keith Jackson dropping those touchdown passes. Why did you cause me to pull that video image from the old brain archives? lol
- best defense? cmon bro. in 1990 birds gave up 299 points, which was 12th in the NFL
oliver north - He's thinking of 1991 when the eagles were #1 against the run, pass and overall which only a handful of teams have ever done.
- And again, Bud Carson was the Defensive coordinator when the Eagles had an all-time defense in 1991. There is some real revisionist history here. The Eagles lost those playoff games because teams would burn the Eagles defense for 60 yd TD's 3 times a game because the middle of the field was wide open with 11 players 5 yds off the line of scrimmage. The Rams Flipper Anderson catching the skinny post for a TD at the end of the first half effectively ending the game (21-0) and continuing to run down the hall into the locker room epitomizes those Eagles Defenses under Ryan. They got really god when Bud Carson took over.
UncleStosh - Rob was the LBs coach on N.E....kind of a stretch...I guess you count the water boy as a SuperBowl champ. No question that was Buddys ring in chicago since the defense won that championship but his sons are a couple of fat slobs.
- do you count reid's ring as QB coach of green bay? he loves to wear it.
oliver north - No, he was Favre's towel boy. He wears it because he knows he'll never get another one...plus it's the only ring that would fit his sausage fingers.
- You mentioned the Ryan's SB wins when they were assistant coaches, why not Reid's. Buddy was DC when he got his but nonetheless, non of them won as a head coach... yet. Thank you sickoflosing at least someone here remembers when we had the most feared D in the league and still couldn't win a championship. I guess Philly dispelled the notion defense wins championships. We couldn't win a playoff game.
- As assistant coaches. Buddy got a lot of credit(mostly him telling everyone else that he was the man) for the Bears but he did inherit like 6 HOF'rs on that team. When he got his shot as the man, he had very talented teams that couldn't get out of the first round of playoff games. And his defenses were the main culprits as teams quickly figured out the 46 and started hitting the post for 6 at will(Hey Flipper come back onto the field!). The Eagles defense didn't become truly great until the fat blabber mouth was gone and Bud Carson showed him how a real coach uses personnel.
