DeSean Jackson: 'Sky's the limit'
Zach Berman, Inquirer Staff Writer
It's common for players to emphasize their excitement when a new coach arrives -- it would be foolish for them to say otherwise -- but DeSean Jackson is one who could especially benefit from the hiring of Chip Kelly. Kelly wants speed and versatility on offense. That's what to expect from Jackson, a two-time Pro Bowler who finished last season on injured reserve and has not record a 1,000-yard season since 2010.
“I feel the sky’s the limit for myself," Jackson said Wednesday. "I think this year, with Chip coming in with the style of play of his offense, it’s really going to help me out a lot more as well. I’m going to be able to get certain looks, get the ball in my hand, do things I wasn’t doing the past five years. So that’s going to be an exciting time ofr myself. I’m going to have to be fully prepared, fully in shape, fully healthy.”
Jackson recovered from his fractured ribs during the first two months of the offseason and was not fully healthy until March. He maintained his conditioning, although he's now able to lift weights and will be a full participant in the offseason program.
He said teams were able to "key in" on him during the past two few seasons, and thinks Kelly can move him around in the offense to maximize his capitabilities. He also hopes to return punts "a little more than last year."
One person Jackson has spoken to about Kelly is Oregon's DeAnthony Thomas, who is from the same part of Los Angeles as Jackson. Expect Jackson to be used in similar ways to Thomas -- or at least Jackson hopes.
"That offensive style was almost cheating," Jackson said. "He’s cheating, getting all these touchdowns, scoring all these points, doing all these crazy stuff, so I’m just excited to hopefully fit into that role.”
cheating huh... defroe
The coach changed but the all-talk, all-hype Gold Standard, Pedal to the metal, Dream Team hasn't missed a beat. Kelly won't throw the ball as much as the Walrus (how could he?). This translates to less chances for you Desean. And before anyone pipes up with "well, Kelly will use him as an H-back", you have Desean running from scrimmage and his brain will be scrambled like the breakfast special at Denny's. He won't run back punts or go over the middle, he's a one dimensional player and that dimension isn't even that good anymore. All in baby! hunglikeaton
“I feel the sky’s the limit for myself," MYSELF???
"it’s really going to help me out a lot more as well" ME???
"So that’s going to be an exciting time for myself" MYSELF???
Come on DeSean, it would have been nice to hear you say something about the team, and winning. I'm sure there was more to the interview that was not written, but.......... hawaiiphillyfan
notice it all about him. no team. I,I,I,me,myself, etc. spittooncj
ME, ME, ME, ME, ME! C'mon, DeSean! I agree with my fellow posters: you'd be so much more productive and better liked if you were a true team player and replaced every reference of "me" with "we" when talking about the Eagles. I was a huge fan of yours the first 2 years. But since then (missing practices, admitting you don't always try hard, alienating teammates with your headphones on all the time, and avoiding contact) you haven't done a whole lot to impress. Something tells me Coach Kelly won't be as enamored and tolerate you half as much Coach Reid. You've got your money. So you better come to play hard everyday. Otherwise I won't be sad to see you traded for a hungrier, taller, more physical wide receiver! CB4
Just wondering if you guys have a copy editor, or at least a spell checker. ."capitabilities"? Jeesh. I could use a part time job. Happy to help out. soundbonz
FULLY in shape and FULLY healthy? Just another reason why Jackson doesn't care about anybody but himself. Inept vernacular selfishness = disaster. KIBecker
Hope DJ gets cut during training camp. He's a "me" guy - not a team guy... bigdaddyG
@Hunglikeaton said it very well. No one will pass more then AR did, it's practically impossible. His best bet is as a bargaining chip up to and including draft day. DeSeans day in the sun is over. The quitting followed by the concussions equal a player who cannot and should not lay it on the line anymore, lest he get killed or seriously injured on the field of play. It was exciting while it was good, but the zest is gone. DelawareRiverRat
How about showing some respect and calling him Coach Kelly? DelcoSchmelco
How do you guys know the question wasn't about him in particular and how he fits into the offense? It's just quotes with no context. Stephen45
The sky is falling, AGAIN. FrankJersey
He neads to learn how to block and how too tackle and how to be a real football player not even mentioning being a team player that he has never been.and it would be nice is he was not afraid to catch the ball between tacklers he has no juts for any of that not sure why he hasent been traded. realtime
Trade for picks pitzdidg
Desean will be a good fit for this offense. But he needs to be used the right way. They should not throw the ball to him down the middle but mostly on post patterns and also use him on end around runs. He can be productive. Also he may sound selfish but he has always cheered on the team particularly when they score. fjulio
