Coleman to IR; Jarrett to start
Jeff McLane, Inquirer Staff Writer
Eagles safety Kurt Coleman was placed on injured reserve with a biceps injury thus ending his season.
With Coleman sidelined, Jaiquawn Jarrett will make his second start of the season. The rookie started at strong safety against the Cardinals on Nov. 17 with Nate Allen out. Jarrett, who jumped in for Coleman on Saturday after he left with his injury, will start at free safety this time around.
The Eagles' safety positions are essentially interchangeable.
Coleman played in 15 games this season and started in 13. He briefly lost his starting job when he had a poor tackling performance against the New York Giants in Week 3. He finishes his season with 96 total tackles and four interceptions.
Jarrett, the Eagles' 2011 second round draft pick, gets another opportunity to make a case that he could challenge Coleman for a starting spot next season.
The Eagles have yet to fill the roster spot vacated by Coleman, but they'll probably need to find another safety for Sunday's season finale against the Redskins. They don't currently have a safety on the practice squad.

The guy's a rookie knucklehead. At least wait until the end of NEXT year before writing him off. phillychaos- WOW Jay how can you say that? He's a rookie and hasn't really played that much. According to you when Dawkins was a rookie he was wasted pick too? If he's not getting playing time after his 4th season then you can say it was a wasted pick not when he's a rookie? I guess when you were hired on your job and went through your learning process you were a wasted hire as well? Oh wait, you're probably 12 repeating what daddy said.
Why do we need to fill the roster spot with another safety? There's currently 3 on the roster with one game left. If we lost a safety during the Redskins game, I'm sure Nnamdi, or another corner, could fill in. phillychaos
I agree it's too early to call Jarrett a wasted pick. But it does beg the question of why he didnt play more. It certainly wasnt because we were getting such great play from our other safeties. Strom- Why not move Asante to safety? Way better than Jarret's going to be and would have a better command of the "defense" xlGmanlx
Earl Thomas= all pro safety. Even the average fan knew to take him over Brandon graham. swinger18
They went to Jarrett. stefek23
Is this the guy that runs a 5.2 40? Justaschmuck
Start the scrubs. Let's see if Kafka has anything. They need to lose or they'll end up drafting around 17th. If they'd lose all these late games they'd be drafting 7th. There's world of difference. 4thand10
I can't believe people are suggesting that Nnamdi or Samuel play safety. First off, safeties are expected to TACKLE. Neither of them is known for their tackling abilities, to put it nicely. Plus, why wouldn't you play Jarrett? In case anyone didn't notice, the Eagles have no shot at the playoffs now. Why would you play a corner at safety in a completely meaningless game when you need to find out more about your second-round pick? riles1875- Actually, Nnamdi has lined up at safety in certain packages. And he CAN tackle. I think you're confusing him with DRC.
And I never suggested playing him over Jarrett at saftey. phillychaos
Wow, an actual 2nd rounder, 54th overall. And here I thought every Eagle defender was a 7th or later no-talent guy. Not sure Coleman can even play outside of special teams for anyone else. PhillySubsMac
@stefek23 - ZING! sore richard
A 2nd round pick that couldn't even sniff the field for a very bad Eagles secondary. They had injuries galore, not to mention playing super duds like Paige who couldn't tackle a corpse! Was Jarrett overwhelmed like a certain 27 yr old Offensive Player they picked in 2011 in the first round? This is exactly the quality of player you get when you save the team money by having the Office Gopher promoted to GM. We'll never know if an authentic GM would have picked that Stud (Pierre-Paul) the Giants selected in 2010 versus the always available, high motor, smallish but fast DE (Graham) that we seem to place on IR, each and every year. Quick, name an Eagles "Impact Defensive Player" drafted by Howie in the last 2 years? Yep, thats right, out of 25 total picks, I couldn't name one either! The future doesn't look good for Philly's bare trophy Case and the Insanity rolls merrily on! younged- spot on. I always enjoy your posts.

Dec 2003...Steelers fans thought they wasted their first round 'moved-up' pick from 27th to 16th in the '03 Draft...a guy name Troy Palomalu..how that work out after the 2003 season! Romus
Who cares! its the last game and no playoffs. Does it really matter?

Why would they sign a Safety off the street now, with one game to play. If they need to, just put Marsh or Hughes back there. SteveS11
"the eagles' safety positions are essentially interchangeable."
none of these guys have any business on an NFL roster so it really doesn't matter who lines up back there. coloradoeagle
