Celek has sports hernia surgery

Tight end Brent Celek underwent surgery to correct a sports hernia, the Eagles announced today.

Celek also had surgery to correct a torn labrum in his left hip. The team termed both procedures, which were performed Tuesday, as being successful. The sports hernia procedure was performed by William Meyers at Thomas Jefferson; the hip operation by John Salvo of the Rothman Institute.

Celek's playing status was never in serious jeopardy due to injury during the season, at least publicy it wasn't.

Celek said, via text message, that the injuries were bothering him for awhile, but that he "was never going to miss a game." He said he received treatment for the injuries and was initially on the injury report, but didn't have it completely checked out until after the season.

Celek also said that recovery from the surgeries wouldn't be a long term process.

He finished the season with 62 catches for 811 yards and five touchdowns. He trailed only wide receiver Jeremy Maclin (63) in receptions.

The Eagles also officially announced that they signed cornerback Trevard Lindley to a futures contract. A fourth round pick of the team in 2010, Lindley was cut just before the season and was not picked up by another team. They also signed running back Graig Cooper to a futures contract. Cooper was briefly with the Eagles during training camp.
