Celebration or strategy? DeSean explains
DeSean Jackson weighed in today on the question of whether he was showboating or running out the clock as he pranced along the Giants goal line before going in for the winning score Sunday. In an interview on SportsCenter he said he was doing a bit of both -- making it clear that part of his goal was coming up with a spectacular celebration before he went into the end zone.
"I was trying to think about doing something crazy, but I just kind of kept it clean. I just wanted to make sure the clock was ran out and don't give them no time to go back out there and hopefully score on us," Jackson said. "I looked up and there was zero seconds left so I was like, 'let me see what else I have in mind.' But from there I just ran into the end zone, man."
The Inquirer's Jeff McLane raised the question this morning about Jackson's intentions, setting off a heated debate between those who believe it was a smart play designed to kill the clock, those who think it was showboating but fun, and those who just wish Jackson would have scored as safely as possible.
For the record, time had expired long before Jackson reached the goal line -- he was around the 20 when the clock hit 0:00. But, to be fair, it's quite possible he wouldn't have seen that right away as he sprinted away from the Giants.
In the ESPN interview, Jackson said it was still "almost unbelievable" to think about the incredible comeback.
"It was an awesome feeling being back there (for the punt), especially knowing there’s 14 seconds left and possibly if I take this back to the end zone the game could be over," Jackson said.
Dropping the ball "froze" the Giants, Jackson said.
"When I dropped the ball I tried to go right, and couldn’t go right, and I just looked back left and there was a huge crease and looked up and Jason Avant made a huge block," Jackson said. "That's something we love to do and go out there and make it look like video games."
As it happens, someone out there has, in fact, made a video game look like the Jackson return. We linked to it earlier today. We also detailed Avant's role in the big play.

I wish people would just get over this. Who the heck cares? The guy is a big-time player who makes big-time plays. He wants to win but he's still a very young guy and he gets excited when he makes big plays. If you want a quiet, "classy" WR, then beg the team to drag James Thrash or Todd Pinkston out of retirement. If he starts bring props to games and making himself a huge distraction like TO or Ocho Cinqo, then that's a problem. As he is now, he's harmless. JimG- Again, the dude scored the game-winning touchdown in the biggest moment of the biggest game of the season. Yet THIS is what we need to have a debate around here about? Good Lord
JimG brings the point home by referring to Thrash and Pinkston. All right, excellent point, but there's still no need for all this crud. It actually takes away from what are very exciting plays. And supposedly he wants more money. You don't get the highest money by surrounding yourself with question marks. So fans who don't like this stuff are doing him a favor by being vocal. tacklinjoe- It's a big deal because his craziness has cost the Eagles a touchdown before. True, he is the biggest playmaker in the NFL since God knows when, but he goes way too far with it. Jim C.
After what he did for this whole FRANCHISE, the whole FAN BASE, and in actuality the whole damned LEAGUE: 1) Bless his lil' heart! 2) Make SURE the guy gets some nice dollar signs when his contract is due. TBear

One question, when DeSean was running parallel to the goal line, were you screaming "get in the endzone" or "c'mon DeSean, showboat some more"? John Sullivan
Take the package-spec/tac/u/lar talent and accept the immaturity. Not one person I knew his age was making better than 60/40 good/bad decisions. His outsized personality and drive is right at home with the over the top ability. Break the personality and you may fracture the talent. NO THANKS! pellelindburg- He's a model for what is wrong with 90% of the "college educated" athletes in the US today. Another idiot diva WR in the making. In 3-5 yrs he'll be in the news for something other than the NFL.
He was not looking at the one giant he had passed. thankfully that guy ran out of gas, or he could've tackled DeSean short of the goal line. It's football not American Idol or Dancing with the Stars. Get in the endzone, congratulate your blockers and ham all you want on the sideline. It's a team game. I can't believe he's thinking of how to celebrate. Hopefully he'll grow up before one of these circus acts will cost the team a score, and maybe a game. If his coach and quarterback have asked him to stop, he ought'a listen. retzlaff- when did his antics cost the eagles a touchdown, jim c? they scored a touchdown in dallas on the next play
Oscar Weiner Jackson. Not enough mustard in the country to cover that hot dog.
A childish display by a talented athlete. phineas
guys, c'mon - get over it. There's nothing wrong with a bit of swagger. What this guy is bringing to the table is insane talent. He looks like a video game out there. I dont' care if he's thinking about how to celebrate while he's scoring a tuchdown, because HE'S SCORING A TUCHDOWN!!!
Let's all stop waiting and wondering if this will backfire on him one day, and enjoy what he's doing. Pheagles Fan
Amazing play by an amazing player. Honestly unbelievable that people are whining about this too. Phineas, youre trash. flyfightinbullies
Citizenc92- Just because he's showboater, it doesn't make him a criminal. Moss, Steve Smith, Ocho, TO, and all the other diva WRs (not named Irvin) are not living a life of crime. Stop being a Richard Noggin.
