Brown and Gocong to the Browns

POSTED: Friday, April 2, 2010, 11:51 AM

Is sending Chris Gocong and Sheldon Brown to the Cleveland a good move by the Eagles?
Yes
No

The Eagles have traded cornerback Sheldon Brown and linebacker Chris Gocong to the Browns for fourth and fifth round draft picks and linebacker Alex Hall, the team announced today.

The Eagles will have the 104th overall pick in the fourth round and the 137th overall pick in the fifth round. They now have ten draft picks.

“Sheldon Brown has been a very good football player for the Eagles over the last eight years,” Eagles coach Andy Reid said in a statement. “He’s a good person, a legitimate tough guy and he’ll do a good job helping the Browns. Chris did a good job converting from defensive end to linebacker and helped us win a lot of football games. We wish both of them all of the best.”

Messages left with Brown and Gocong and their agents were not immediately returned.

Brown was an unhappy camper the last year. He publicly griped about his contract last April and the Eagles responded with a press release that essentially said shut up and play. For the most part, he did. He played in every game -- once again -- and had one of his better seasons, recording 68 tackles and five interceptions. Reid admitted last week at the owners' meetings that the Eagles had received inquiries about their last holdover from the 2004 NFC champion starting defense.

Eagles general manager Howie Roseman, during a conference call, said that moving Brown was a football decision and had nothing to do with his contract situation. Roseman was asked what he would say to fans that were upset about Brown's departure.

"What I'd say is we're trying to build a great team and a great defense and a team that they're proud of," Roseman said. "And we're going to execute that. Sheldon is one of my favorite players. I told him that when I spoke to him today."

With Brown gone, Ellis Hobbs will step into his cornerback spot, Roseman said. Hobbs suffered a season-ending neck injury last November and had surgery to correct a herniated disk the following month. The Eagles expect him to be back by the start of the season.

Roseman also mentioned Joselio Hanson as an option to replace Brown. Roseman would not say if Macho Harris was being moved from safety to cornerback. He also said that there could be a cornerback in the draft capable of stepping in and starting right away.

Brown is the latest veteran Eagles player to be sent packing. The Eagles have either released or traded the following players over the last month: running back Brian Westbrook, linebacker Will Witherspoon, wide receiver Reggie Brown, defensive end Chris Clemons, guard Shawn Andrews, defensive end Darren Howard, wide receiver Kevin Curtis, Brown and Gocong.

Roseman said the team was not rebuilding.

"I think all those veterans have been good players for us," he said. "I don’t want to slight any of them. ... We looked at it going forward and what kind of team we wanted going forward. … It won't take full shape until minicamp. Sometimes when you look at a piecemeal it doesn’t all come together."

Gocong started most of last season at strong-side linebacker, but eventually lost his spot to Fokou. He could benefit from playing in Cleveland's 3-4 defensive scheme. Browns GM Tom Heckert helped draft Gocong four years ago when he was with the Eagles and obviously still sees something in the 26 year old.

The 6-5, 250-pound Hall played in 30 games (2 starts) for the Cleveland Browns and recorded 30 tackles and three sacks, while adding 18 stops on special teams. His sacks came in three consecutive games during the early portion of his rookie campaign of 2008. The 24-year-old Hall was a 7th round draft choice of the Browns.

"Alex Hall is a big, athletic linebacker who we’ve had our eyes on over the last couple of years and he’ll have a chance to compete at the SAM linebacker spot," Roseman said in a statement.

With the acquisition of Cleveland’s 5th round pick, the Eagles now have 10 total selections in this year’s draft: 1st round (24th overall), 2nd round (55), 3rd round (70, from Seattle), 3rd round (87), 4th round (105, from Cleveland), 4th round (121), 5th round (137, from Cleveland), 6th round (200, from Indianapolis), 7th round (243, compensatory pick), and 7th round (244, compensatory pick).

"I think it's exciting," Roseman said. "It allows us to have a lot of options on draft weekend. If we want to move up or around it gives us options."

Yes, S Brown was a little baby whining about his contract, but he showed up and played his tail off last season. He was a pro bowl caliber player, while playing hurt near the end the season. How do the Eagles repay him? Trade him. Makes zero sense. We extend Banner and Reid, but let go of everyone else. What a joke this franchise is becoming.

The team wasn't going to be good enough in 2010 to make a Superbowl run, that should be obvious. The core was aging rapidly. They started the offense remake last year, now this year it's the defense. If the draft goes well and Kolb is the real deal, this will be a young strong team in 2011 and beyond. The whole Eagles are cheap line is and always has been wrong, dumb, and silly. (Post Norman Bramen, there was a cheap SOB.)

yes sheldon played hard, played hurt, and was a staple in our secondary....BUT, he whines, and was never a GREAT corner. good, sure, but never top-tier. lets hope there's a plan in place to replace him! calling oakland, are you there?

those 4th and 5th round picks are huge, I expect us to pick up some pro bowl caliber players with those picks. Maybe next we can trade McNabb for Jemarcus Russell and a 6th round pick.

Looks like a stockpile of picks for a possible BIG trade? I smell a major trade up using McNabb and lower picks for a very high first round pick and change.

Looks like a bad deal. Giving up a starting CB and another potential starter for a back-up and 2 low picks is weak.

Gocong and Hall cancel each other out. So we traded Sheldon for a 4th & 5ht rounder. This is pretty fair. He's a 32 year old CB looking for more money. I don't think we could of got anything better than a 4th rounder. Maybe a 3rd but that would of been tough. We now have 5 picks within the first 105 picks of the draft. A deep defensive draft at that. This is not a terrible move, as much as I liked Sheldon.

djunderh2o sheldon was a top 10 CB, and when he was healthy maybe better. the eagles are dealing him b/c he is 31, im convinced b/c he had a great season last year... and just like brian dawkins the eagles will pay for this one. the ealges got all cocky after the lito/sheldon draft worked out when they lost troy/bobby but this wont work out like that.

4th, 5th, and a scrub. For a starting CB that should have been a pro bowler for the last 2 years. And for a player whose potential has not been utilized since he arrived. Eagles once again get fleeced in a trade. Penny pinchers, what a joke of a franchise.

relax, this is just the first shoe dropping. the other shoe will be getting the raiders corner Asomugha in exchange for mcnabb. then we will give him a huge extension. whether he is still an elite cb though, we will have to wait and see.

The writing's on the wall and it reads "McNabb to Oakland for Asomugha and 2nd rd pick" which will be the late picks the eagles have gotten fom Clevland. It would be an upgrade at corner and Brown wasn't happy anyway and Gocong was decent but let's be serious.McNabb has 10 years in league and still can't hit a receiver in stride and quite honestly I'm tired of "yo dawg,my bad" chest tap after he drills one into the dirt that would have been an easy complete.I don't recall seeing ANY pro QB smiling so often after missing easy throws all day,Manning,Brady,Farve,Rivers,Brees maybe Kurt Warner?NOPE,all have "Eye of the Tiger" and all are winners.Let the Kolb Era begin which may have bumps in the road but Donovan doesn't have what it takes of that im sure

Ridiculous. What is this team doing? I like Sheldon Brown better than Asante Samuel. He's much more of a good consistent player. Trading Gocong makes sense since he never really fit in here. I would take a 4th rounder or maybe even a 5th rounder for him at this point, but we trade Sheldon Brown for a LB who had 10 tackles (total) last year and a 4th/5th round pick? Maybe they plan on getting the CB from Oakland for McNabb. Although your not really addressing needs there since you already had good corners with Brown, Samuel and Hobbs. All the Eagles have done this off-season by cutting and trading guys is create more holes than they had when the off-season started. There is no way we can get a good starting S, LB, 3rd CB, DE and a couple of OL in the draft alone. I guess its rebuilding time for the next couple years.

Instead of everyone just whining and crying about how bad this trade is, can you please give some reasoning behind it? Let's break it down: Gocong - The Birds tried to convert this late round pick from a small school from a down lineman pass rusher to a strong side linebacker. It didn't really work by all accounts. Do you think other teams thought it did? What is he worth? Not much, basically a 7th rounder at best. Brown - Yes, he is a decent corner. His best quality is his ability to make tackles. News flash people, corners aren't supposed to have to make tackles. That means someone made a catch in front of them. In 2007, Champ Bailey had 2 balls THROWN HIS DIRECTION the entire season. That's right, the QB on the other team didn't throw a ball towards CB the entire season. Sheldon makes nice tackles after his guy makes the catch a lot of time but a lot of times it's too late because he got burnt and the guy is in the end zone. Count up in your mind how many times that happened over the years including at the end of last year (and the Dallas games). They got fair market value for Sheldon. And they might replace him with Asomugha who is in the same league as Champ Bailey. Patience people.

ellis hobbs is a smaller less talented version of sheldon " do you like you toast lightly" Brown. Gocong never made the switch and was a non-factor although he seemed to be OK when played as a Joker. Neither of these guys are athletic playmakers which is what we need on D. Does this mean Macho is going back to corner? Scary.

Look for the Eagles to draft CB Wilson from Boise St. with the 24th pick. He is very impressive. I would also not be surprised to see us deal Stacy Andrews if we can get something decent for him.. I think the Eagles want to rid themselves of anything Andrews. its going to be a tough year for the Eagles with so many changes and a tough schedule. Look for 6-10 or 7-9.

Sheldon Brown was hurt towards the end of last year. That's why he was giving up a lot of plays. Normally he is solid and definitely worth a 3rd round pick. Although it doesn't really matter given the way the Eagles draft in the mid rounds. How many good picks have they had in the 3rd to 5th rounds in recent years? Not many at all.

andrew23 my problem is their defensive backfield right now is a disaster and I don't think there's any real chance Asomugha is coming here. Linebackers are weak and the Mike is coming off a knee injury, and defensive line depth is nonexistant. They're gonna take a step back unless they strike gold in the draft

Sheldon has been a very good player for us that can lay the wood. He want money for what he will do in the future, and he is already losing a step. He was a 2nd round pick, and we got a 4th rounder. Again, he is on the start of the downside of his career, so we weren't going to get much better for him.

I don't mind the moves to collect picks and go younger, but I don't like that the team is banking on a number of injured players - Hobbs, M. jackson, Bradley - to recover 100 percent and play pain-free and rust-free this year. That's a huge gamble, unless they legitimately feel they can get a FS and a decent CB in the first few rounds of the draft.

Mario, I'd rather get a 4th and a 5th than just a 3rd. And to answer your question about how they've done in the mid rounds. Here are some names in rounds 3-5 since 2005. Tent Cole (5), Todd Herremins (4), Max Jean Gillis (4), Jason Avant (4), Omar Gaither (5), Stewart Bradley (3), Brent Celek (5), Quinten Demps (4), Cornelius Ingram (5), and Macho Harris (5). All are still with the team and many start and some pro bowlers. Just remember it's April 2nd. They didn't make some good moves till late last year (Weaver). Let's see what happens with further trades, signings and god forbid the draft. They have actually gotten players in the draft to contribute the last 2 years so let's be a bit patient, maybe?

I love the passion this city shows for tough, high-character guys like Sheldon, but Sheldon was never a top-10 CB, and he was never a true playmaking safety, just solid, and usually a good tackler. Would be great if we could get a hybrid of him and Asante, but those guys don't come along very often. The key here is that he's an over-30 CB, and like RBs, once you get to 31 or 32, players at that position fade quickly. Age breakdown happens overnight. He might not be there yet, but he will get there soon. Getting a 4th and 5th in exchange for Sheldon is pretty good, assuming Hobbs can handle it or there are other plans for that side of the field. Swapping Gocong, who will never be what they hoped he would at the SAM for a guy who might be a better fit isn't a bad idea either.

WTF Brown was and has been our best conerback over the last 3 years. Giving him away because we won't redo his contract is a disgrace. Hanson/Hobbs as replacements are you F kidding me. Defense is going backwards we are giving away only good defensive players we even have on this team because age & money. Maybe DM should ask to be traded because this team isn't going in the right direction at all.

Gogoong was dead wood, demoted last year no longer a starter. Brown although capable has seen his better days plus became a distraction with his unreasonable salary demands. Look for the Eagles to package draft picks and McNabb to move up to 1st round pick. Look for a high draft cornerback. we are getting younger and will not be any worse off. The players Reid has cut or traded were all past their primes or were not all that good to begin with. Time to move on and rebuild this defense on the fly. it can't be any worse off than last year. Save your judgements till after the draft.

Sheldon is a great player, but doesnt have enough left to justify a new deal...Gocong was playing out of position here. The move makes perfect sense. If you don't see that, then you need to understand the process more. I'd bet $ there's a DB coming here via another trade before the draft.

A question about Hall. He is big, more like a MLB. Any chance that he could be the back-up or compete with Bradley? Bradley might not be up to full strength. Hate to see Sheldon go, however, he is on the down side of his career. He was injured a bit last year and that is usually the beginning of the end. Let's not over-rate our guys, look at how well Lito did with the Jets.

Im waiting it out to see what we look like after the draft...but we can add Cornerback to the list of needs now along with O-Linemen, D-Linemen, LBer, S. That is a lot of need to fill, but on the bright side we just became the youngest team in the league. If we trade McNabb we will only have 3 30+ player (J.Thomas, D.Akers S.Rocca) The future is now...i hope.

I don't see what the problem is, Gocong couldn't even get on the field toward the end of the season and like someone else said Sheldon as much as I respected him wasn't great. To me this looks like it clears the way to trade with Oakland for Asomugha.

They wouldn't trade Brown if there wasn't already a plan in place. They can't possibly expect to go into a season with Hobbs and Hansen competing to replace Sheldon (though they thought Harris, Jones, and Demps could replace Dawkins). Which leads me to even further believe that they have a trade in place with Oakland that would bring Asomugha to Philly in exchange for Donovan, but will not announce it until either Opening Day or the Phil's home opener. Just watch.

terrible return on a guy who is a above average corner in this pass happy league, do you think they will get a player as good as him in the 4th or 5th round, pathetic.

Oakland is not going to part with Asomugha. Hes their best player, its really wishful thinking on our part. Aint gonna happen. Look for them to draft a cb with one of the first few picks.

I'm usually pretty positive about the Eagles moves but I don't see the value in this. They could of moved Brown to safety and got another 4 or 5 good years out of him. Brown was a great Eagle, lunch pail guy, who showed up and worked every day. I hope the rumors of McNabb for Namdi Asomugha are correct now. Horrible trade. Goodbye Sheldon and good luck.

OMG THE DEFENSE IS NOT STRONG IT'S WEAK THE OFFENSE IS EXPLOSIVE BUT IS IT EXPLOSIVE ENOUGH TO MURDER DALLAS NEXT SEASON?? I DON'T THINK SO THIS OFFENSE NEEDS TO BE REALLY EXPLOSIVE , SO EXPLOSIVE IT'S LIKE A MW2 TACTICAL NUKE. (DRAFT TAYLOR MAYS) WHO AGREES?

agree, he was not a great corner, could never guard taller receivers. if he wasn't hurt against Dallas, then he played poorly, giving up too much ground on slants, etc. he did play tough and tackled well, not an attribute of the guy on the other corner.

I do not understand. Are you people actually arguing that Brown and Gocong played well last year?

Good luck, Sheldon. You were a class act and great competitor. I hope you get a great contract and I wish you much success in Cleveland.

I agree with getting the picks. But doesn't it tell you something about a guy who never missed a game? Doesn't the hit where he literally knocked the snot out of Reggie Bush tell you something? I love this guy. Brown's what we want in a player and they trade him. We keep Patterson a guy that gets no pressure and gets blocked out like the sun in a eclipse. Just about all the birds hit like wimps other than Dawk, Sheldon and Bradley. Don't like this. Not one bit.

I'm waiting for Stefan Awhole Smith to write an article about how trading Sheldon is disraceful & racist! And then not say a thing about Gocong!

Sheldon was a very steady player. I think he will be missed. 'Cong' will probably be better in Cleveland's 3-4 than he was here. There has been a big house cleaning this year by the birds. They will need to hit a few homeruns in the draft this year to replenish the talent that was cut/traded. This is the first off-season in a while were I wasn't sure if the team got better. We have a tough schedule this year and we have a lot of question marks right now.

Sheldon got owned by the Cowboys a couple in a very embarrassing way. Awful. He can still hit, but no speed. No speed. And I'm a Gamecock alum, I love the guy. No speed. Chris Gocong? Was he on the team? Oh yeah, Mike Mamula not on roids. See-yah. Good enough deal. AFC team too. Alex Hall = Training camp meat.

Love these moves. Gocong flat out stinks and Sheldon wanted out anyway. Agree with Howie that this gives the Eagles more options on draft day, and if nothing else, a couple extra chances to find some "keepers" in the later rounds. Also like the fact that they picked up a young linebacker in the deal. If he pans out, and they use the picks wisely, Andy and Co will look pretty smart. If he bombs and they waste the picks, all we lost was a disgruntled player and one who lost his starting job last year.

BOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!! I dont see how this helps us at all. Our Defense was already a mess now we are missing a starting CB. I dont care about GoCong he was never a 4-3 linebacker but S.Brown was a good player. he wanted more money but who dosent. He deserved to get paid. I dont know why they are cutting all the veterns. We already have a terrible defense now they just made a huge hole that cant be filled by E.Hobbles or a rookie.

If you think the eagles had a bad defense in 2009 wait until the 2010 season starts, brown getting a little older but still a good player gocong still young is at this point average getting draft picks is good but they take time to develope.

The eagles have been on top for a decade now. I remember all the horrible day we have. Look at what happend to th 49's because they kept their player on to long. This is a buisness. I trust Reid and Banner. Yes, Brown is a great player, but he has maybe a few good years in him left. Let's get what we can now. It is the same thing with Mcnabb.
