Defensive tackle Brodrick Bunkley will need surgery on his injured left elbow and is could be out for the year, Andy Reid said Monday on his weekly radio show on WIP.
"It looks like Bunkley is possibly done for the year," Reid said. "He's got surgery on that elbow. That's not a good thing, he had ligament damage in there. The nerve where your funny bone is, that nerve in there shifted. It's not a career ending play, but it's going to take time to get him back."
UPDATE: Reid also said left tackle Jason Peters may have cartilage damage in his knee, and the team would know more in the next few days.
"He can't support his weight on it," Reid said. King Dunlap filled in for Peters Sunday and had a poor showing.
Bunkley left the game in the first half, leaving the Eagles with just three true defensive tackles: Mike Patterson, Trevor Laws and Antonio Dixon, though Darryl Tapp and Brandon Graham play inside at times.
If Bunkley is indeed out, the Eagles will have lost three starters for the year: fullback Leonard Weaver, center Jamaal Jackson, not to mention having two starting quarterbacks hurt in the first five games.
Reid also said that defensive end Antwan Barnes, released this week to make room for wide receiver Chad Hall, is likely gone for good. Reid didn't say it, but the Eagles likely need to add depth at defensive tackle, wide receiver or both.
Reid also was noncommittal when asked about who starts at quarterback this week. Michael Vick likely needs more time to heal, but Reid isn't saying so.
More concerned about the Peters injury, not because Peters is any good but Dunlap is so horrible. Kolb will be a sitting duck next weekend against Atlanta. I find it hard to believe that can't find SOMEONE to come in. Expect some more dink and dunks next weekend to slow down the pass rush...and let Vick rest. No need to rush him back this week, I have a feeling he would get hurt even more, so let your backup take the rips. EaglesBleedMoney- ...weeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee
As others have said, how can the NFL move to an 18 game schedule? By week 18 and then into the playoffs, your third string QB will be the starter. The quality is really going to degrade. And don't tell me about expanding the roster. If a player is not good enough to make the 53 man roster, I don't really think I want to spend my free time and if I go to the game, my hard-earned money watching the 60th man on the roster. Just look at the NBA for the quality you get when rosters get watered down. rs505- Bunkley only plays on 'running' downs, gets hurt on the 2nd play, Dixon comes in as his 'running' down replacement, and Frank Gore only gains 52 yards (and he got about 10 yards on the two plays Bunkley was in there). Dixon got a sack too. So no drop off there.
- I guess lost in all the injuries (Reids best friend and job saver) is how much Stew Bradley sucked last night. He had so many missed tackles and again got abused in the passing game. This guy is terrible
The good thing about having no impact players on defense is that losing any one of them will have no impact. What's the over/under on Sean McDermott lasting the season? I say he gets the boot in the bye week. I was willing to give Opie Taylor a chance last year, but this year's defense -- even with Bradley back and the hole at safety filled -- is even worse. iceman
Good maybe Patterson will get hurt too and our run defense may get better. Bunkley is not any good and same with Patterson. Im tired of this small and supposedly fast D we have. And how abouy drafting a linebacker high in the draft as opposed to starting slobs every year. HateAndy
I think Bunkley had 1 tackle against the Skins. At least Dixon had a sack last night. Maybe its time for a change, unfortunately for Bunkley. watsonmr- So much for the youth movement and speed upgrade. These faster, lighter players are getting battered like piñatas. Andy "Draft-Day Genius" Reid has gotta go!
not much of a loss. osi is hurt boohoo
Think anyone will notice? Hes been really disappointing IMO hipdaddy
$%*^*&$%, this guy going down is worse then Vick x10. Because he actually played defense and stuffs the run. The run D was so pathetic he was trying to hard to stop the guy and extended his arm out more then he normally would just to try to make a play since the linebackers are so terrible at doing that, and now hes out for the year. If they had any chance of even winning 8 games thats gone. Bunkley was one of the best players on the D. and Reid was dumb to have absolutely NO depth behind him and patterson. been like that for 2 years now. stupidity. CharlieGarner25
I can't believe the league would think 18 regular season games is a good idea. Are we supposed to believe the NFL is concerned with player safety? What a joke. The NFL couldn't care less about player safety where money is concerned. Injuries are too big a part of the game nowadays. p-diddy
I don't know, I look at teams like the Packers and Eagles, some more injury prone than others. I think there is a lot to the training program leading up to the season. I have my doubts about this training staff eagledon
Guys this size cant take a full season. Andy should try drafting undersized linemen and rotating them in and out of play. Its like baseball, where the pitchers throw every few days...so they can throw...fastballs... dragoon6
expand the rosters to 85 or 90 gladiators. throw the meat on the fire! doc35
18 games is a joke as mindstorms says. League will have to up roster sizes and change IR rules for it to happen. Players careers will be that much shorter. tpizza- 14 games sounds realistic. basic physics says that with players routinely over 300 pounds, for example, but faster, means far, far more injuries. Now we have hard data on the head injuries... Jim C.
- I was wondering about the injuries, too. I don't know it it just seems like injuries are up, or what. I know this, it now seems to be a prerequisite to have two good QBs, and it was not always like that. The 18 games proposalis disgusting. Jim C.
i think they still win 10 games this year............. malco49
I know I'll get crushed for this, but did anyone ever think that maybe the human body was not made to play football? Don't get me wrong, I love watching it but there are soooooo many injuries. carlosbeltran
Look around the league. Players on going down left and right. Exactly how does the NFL think they will be able to increase the number of games per season? mindstorms
That does it. I'm scrapping my hotel reservations I had made for the Super Bowl. AreaMan
Not good news, but Dixon is decent. tacklinjoe- Broderick who? Was he playing this year at all?
Stick with Kolb. filly2sf
