Asomugha carted off with left knee injury

POSTED: Thursday, November 24, 2011, 12:00 PM

How confident would you be in the Eagles pass defense against the Patriots if Nnamdi Asomugha is unable to play?
Not confident at all. Tom Brady will carve them up like a Thanksgiving turkey.
A little confident. Joselio Hanson looked good last week and Brandon Hughes can do a decent job.
Very confident. The defense is on a roll and shut down the Giants’ better-than-average passing game.

Eagles cornerback Nnamdi Asomugha was carted off the practice field after he suffered a left knee injury on Thursday.

The team said Asomugha would undergo further evaluation before it made a final diagnosis. He was listed as a partial participant in practice. His status for Sunday's game against the Patriots was unclear, though, after he crumbled to the turf during a non-contact play.

“It’s painful to see,” safety Kurt Coleman said. “You never want to see a teammate go down, especially when they’re holding lower body [parts]. That stuff can affect your career.”

Cornerback Joselio Hanson said that he was told the injury wasn't serious.

"It looked bad, but they said he was going to be alright, expecting to come back tomorrow and practice," Hanson said.

The Eagles are already down a cornerback with Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie out with a high ankle sprain. Hanson has filled in for Rodgers-Cromartie as the nickel corner, but said if Asomugha couldn't go Sunday he would move outside in the base defense and play in the slot on nickel downs. Brandon Hughes would then take Hanson's spot on the outside.

Rookie Curtis Marsh is another option.

“Brandon – he’s really good and he’s coming into his own with more game experience,” Coleman said. “With Curtis, he’s athletic. He loves to be able to get up there and bump and run and he has the speed to run with any wide receiver.”

The Eagles' secondary already had a number of difficult matchups with quarterback Tom Brady and his bevy of receivers coming to town. Asomugha's injury only further complicates defensive coordinator Juan Castillo's game planning.

Castillo has used Asomugha is many different ways this season. He was expected to help out with covering the Patriots' lethal two-headed tight end duo of Rob Gronkowski and Aaron Hernandez.

“There are different packages that we have," Castillo said before Asomugha's injury. "And I think that they know, sometimes Nnamdi will be there, sometimes he won’t be there. It could be two guys or one guy or maybe a safety. The thing is they’ve seen all those things so you’re not going to trick anybody.”

The Eagles host New England at 4:15 p.m.

Please dont be ACL. I have a bad feeling it is because they are usually non contact and it happened at practice

Wait till you see Curtis Marsh cover Wes Welker for an entire game and see if Nnamdi's absence doesn't matter.

u people are all idiots. cant cut him, that puts us over the cap because signing bonus all gets thrown into same year. And he isnt a ghost, that is his game you knit wit. Same as when he is on the raiders. Teams dont want to throw against him, hence you dont see him in action. The few times it appears he was in coverage it was zone coverage, not his game! seriously, sometimes i am baffled by the uneducated fan.

This team really does have too many ignorant, mindless people who call themselves fans.

In order to fill the void left by Asomuhga, the Eagles will replace him with an up-turned mop with a bucket for a head placed in a roller skate.

Lets not pretend that he's been All-World this year because he hasn't. This could be a blessing in disguise though (to a certain extent). I've been advocating for DRC and Samuel to be benched to get Marsh and Hughes some experience. Looks like they could get some experience now. Unfortunately, it comes with the team's "best" corner injured.

With Nnamdi, without Nnamdi, doesn't matter. Brady will carve up our defense. We have no shot against this QB, c'mon get real we won't win this game.

This is true, I really doubt we can even keep it close against the Patriots. We are not that good.
