Andy Reid's endorsement of Michael Vick nearly identical to Monday's endorsement of Juan Castillo
Zach Berman, Inquirer Staff Writer
Andy Reid's endorsement of quarterback Michael Vick as his starting quarterback was just as strong as his Monday endorsement of Juan Castillo as his defensive coordinator. And we all saw that turned out.
Asked if Michael Vick will start against the Falcons, Reid sald: "As I sit here today, he's the starting quarterback."
On Monday, when he was asked if Castillo would still make the defensive playcalls, "that’s the way I’m looking at it as I stand right here.”
Reid said Tuesday that he's "looking at everything," an indication that Vick could still lose his job to Nick Foles. When Reid was told his answer about Vick could make fans believe he's considering a change, Reid understood.
"I'm just telling the truth," Reid said. "That's what I'm saying to you. Right now, Michael Vick is the starting quarterback."
Vick has 13 turnovers this season and has been the one of the main reasons why the Eagles offense is struggling. Reid started the Tuesday news conference announcing Castillo's dismissal by stating that "this one of of the moves." He said he'll continue to look at everything -- players, coaches, offense, defense special teams. The starting quarterback might be next.
"All I can tell you today is what I've got down today," Reid said, "and you can take it however you have to take it."
Frankly - firing Juan Castillo was a foregone conclusion. The excuses last year from lack of camp to this year such as the wide 9 is supposed to be a sack machine and has come up empty makes the case pretty clear. If anyone lstened to Hollis Thoams on WIP after last weeks game with Detroit, he was shocked at how poorly the defensive front covered their gaps. You don't have to be a genius to see this defense with all its draft picks is getting worse from week to week. The players all think they are great and losing is not their fault. Look in the mirror and win loss column guys - the facts are told in your record not by what you believe to be your greatness. Peace out wort
He can't replace Vick with Foles. He already admitted one mistake with the Castillo hiring, I don't think he's going to be in a hurry to admit another one any time soon. dlivesay
Bench Vick at 3-3 for a rookie? If he does that, Reid DESERVES to be fired on the spot. elijah29- I agree, because NO rookie has ever done better than 13 turnovers in six games or gone 3-3! I'd say RGIII is doing slightly better than Vick this year. Cam Newton Andy Dalton last year were all better than Vick! He ll, even Christina Ponder and Blaine Gabbert managed more TDs than INTs - something Vick struggles with!

Looking back, Reid did make the move at week 8 to insert the rookie Donovan McNabb into the starting QB position. Foles is likely more ready than McNabb was. When you look at the situation here, the offense has been a much bigger problem then the defense. HE HAS TO DO SOMETHING WITH THE OFFENSE. That leaves either Marty or Vick. The fans would be way more understanding with Reid if he was working with a promising young QB. Lets Eat
Michael Vick can not be legitimately considered the future of the franchise. Neither can Nick Foles at this time. We should find out whether Foles can be an upgrade as soon as possible. Everyone knows that Andy can't stick with Vick past this season if there are no playoffs for the birds. He will be inclined to throw Mike under the bus as the situation worsens. If he doesn't make the move now he will likely be waiting too long to keep the locker room from exploding into descension and division. bentlip
Vick's turnovers are only one problem on the offense. The other two are that Shady doesn't get the ball enough and the offensive line sucks. Running the ball more takes care of the second problem and helps greatly with the first and third problems, and taking playcalling duties away from Marty will result in running the ball more. Keep Vick, take playcalling duties away from Marty. atlvickfan- Unless Reid takes over play calling again - then we might see even MORE passing!
gdibig - Just like the other poster said, Reid is already calling the plays via his head phone set connected to Marty. Reid and Marty determine together which plays go on the plastic sheet they both hold. Then its just about which play on the plastic sheet is called. Marty and Reid are collaborating on almost every play call.

@atlvickfan, vick's turnovers are the only problem on offense? Have you watched any eagles games this year? How about never being able to score a TD from inside the 20? That's not a problem? Vick's turnovers are part of it, but to say that it's the ONLY problem is ludicrous eaglepride- Yeah, the other problems include Vick passing into the ground or over their heads (seems like a bad dream from a few years ago!), holding onto the ball for too long and getting sacked, or trying to run himself for 1 yard when he can dump it off to Shady or Celek for five or six!

He didn't talk to anybody, he talked to himself. bentlip
Hey idiots, you see the headphone set on Reid's head? Reid is in CONSTANT contact with Marty Moron...about the play calls. Get real, Marty is not under the gun because its him and Reid TOGETHER calling the plays. Realistically, no play is called without Reid knowing it...and if he does not like it, he tells Marty... NO. Think Headset people because that is what is happening. Kioto
Lost in all this is this question: what caused the obvious offensive change in the 3rd quarter, where the QB's drops were quicker, the receivers' routes shorter and the release of the ball faster? Why did it take an entire half, obsessed with the 18-25 yard throw, and Vick getting plastered, before the change was made? Was the change in the playcalling, or Vick simply deciding to throw to the first open receiver and take the shorter gains?
THAT change is more important long term than the DC.

Our offense is last in the NFL and we fire the Defensive Coordinator? This is a cover up for the poor offensice decisions made by Andy. To top it off we have no play so we hired Bowles. This team is still going backwards.
