Andy Reid names Nick Foles the starting quarterback for remainder of season

POSTED: Monday, December 3, 2012, 12:29 PM

Andy Reid named Nick Foles the starting quarterback for the rest of the season, regardless of Michael Vick's health.

"It gives one of your players the opportunity to play here, the next four games, as a starter," Reid said. "Each week, he's been the replacement guy. Now he is the starter, we'll see how he does with that on his plate, see how he handles it. I don't expect much change there with him."

Reid said Vick is on "the fast track" and might return this weekend, although he's still at the fourth phase of the concussion recovery. But Reid said the decision was made in part for Vick's long-term health.

"I think, where we're out, with the season, it gives this kid an opportunity to play and finish it up," Reid said. "He's playing well enough that I think he can win football games for us. Where we sit at this position in the season, it's the right thing to do."

Foles has started the past three games with Vick out with a concussion. In three starts and four total appearances, he completed 60.9 percent of his passes for 739 yards, two touchdowns, and three interceptions.

"I did speak to [Vick], and he was very positive about it," Reid said. "He completely understood. He's on board."

Vick will likely be the No. 2 quarterback when he's healthy. Reid emphasized that Vick's concussion recovery has taken a long time -- Vick is still at the fourth phase of a five-step process and has not passed his ImPACT test -- and wants Vick healthy enough to have a long career.

"He still has three, four years that he can probably get out there, wing it, so let's get him healthy and on right direction there," Reid said.

Reid said he made the decision on Vick without interference from the front office.

"One great thing about the Philadelphia Eagles organization is Jeffrey [Lurie], when Joe [Banner] was here, and Howie [Roseman] and the other general managers were here, they allowed me to make decisions," Reid said. "I understand where you're coming from that you need to know that, but those are my decisions."

LpBoys, you are on fire with the dumb comments. Even as a Vick fan, you are wrong on so many levels. "He needs to play for an organization where fans will appreciate him and not for Philly." haha, thats just grand, meanwhile the Eagles were the only team to hire a felon right out of the can, hows that for appreciation. Oh and the part where they made him the starter after promising that to Kolb. Now were supposed to think this is a dumb move or feel bad for him after his awful performances. Then you rip a rookie for his stats in only 3 starts, not taking into consideration they are calling the gm much different so many more running TDs etc. Hes still moving the ball far better than Vick and making much better reads. He still has a long way to go, difference is, the jury is out on Vick and all you have left are excuses. If you are no longer an Eagles fan because of some loyalty to Vick, then you never were an Eagles fan like others mentioned. You embody the "complete idiot" tag for your being the "complete" Vick apologist. Dont let the door hit you....

Peteike. You are not making any sense. The only right thing you stated was that I said the fans don't appreciate him which many eagles fans didn't. That is evident on this post alone. The eagles signing him and making him the starter has nothing to do with the fans. Those decisions are made by the organization so what are you talking about. Please tell me how is Foles moving the ball far better. Vick's problem was never moving the ball. We had trouble in the red zone. I am not ashamed to say I am a Vick fan. So what. I was an eagles fan way before Vick was in the NFL, but idiotic fans such as yourself think that Foles is better than Vick. You are sitting here saying that I am a Vick apologist, but you are sitting here calling him a felon and bashing him. So obviously you are a fan that wanted Nick Foles to start from the beginning of the season and probably didn't want Vick to start from the beginning. A lot of you Eagles fans are hypocrites. Oh btw, what excuses did I make for Vick? I didn't make one excuse for him.

Just thought I'd mention, Foles has put up better quarterback ratings in 3 of his 4 games than Vick has averaged in any season outside of the fluky 2010 year. He's also led the Eagles to more points per 60 minutes in those same 3 games than Vick has this season. Because of the small sample size, you can't really draw a conclusion from that. I just found it interesting.

Bonus: I get to buy my daughter Eagles clothes again now that they no longer have a brutal dog killer as the face of the franchise. Sweet!!!

mac_B%$ch. Are you sure you went to college because your comments are stupid. I said how many tds did Foles scores to make a point. Foles isn't moving the ball, Bryce Brown is. You all are annoiting Nick Foles like he is scoring 3-4 touchdowns a game. Mac_B@#ch quit beating your d**k to Nick Foles.

Good move by Reid for a change. The Eagles have to find out if Foles is the QB of the future or at least a reliable backup. Just wish he could be evaluated properly behind a decent offensive line.

Well, I'm not afraid to say it. I don't like Vick, and I never have. I don't like his "style" of play and I never have. I was a fan of it when Randall Cunningham was here, and after he left I realized... it just doesn't win big games.

This isn't because he's black, or a dog killer. It's because he's sucks and he always has sucked. He simply isn't smart or humble enough to play this game at a championship level.

Foles isn't the franchise savior. He may even have some growing pains, but judging the dude after three games is just stupid as stupid can get. Its the right move to let him finish the season and EVERYONE outside Philly has been saying this since he took over.

I admit to the sinking feeling that Reid may be back next year as well. I'm hope I'm (we're) wrong. It's time to move on.

As for the bandwagon LP guy, I am highly disgusted by quite a few comments by fellow fans on here frequently, but you know what? They're still MY fellow fans and even If I sometimes feel the need the argue with them, I'll be damned if I let some other arsehole fans talk shite on em! We all bleed green for a reason. *insert your expletive here*

So GTFO, we never needed a... "fan" like you anyway.

Weston, I hope you are a saying that same bandwagon comment for others as well. There were many people that said they did not want to be eagles fans anymore when Vick signed. There were also others that said they would not be eagles fans if Vick played again after his current injury. Infact, there are people on this post saying it, and I don't see you responding to them. Where were you then? I was an Eagles fan long before Vick was even in the NFL. So go F off. You are probably a Nick Foles D&*^ rider.

Bye-bye SCUMBAG! The Eagles should have never brought that piece of human (if he is in fact that) garbage on this team anyway. Good luck, Foles! Glad I can finally cheer for the Eagles again!

Vick will get another job in this league. KC, Arizona both need QB's. Vick will have to restructure his contract. $7-$10 million a year with incentives. He can be brought in while a younger QB is developed behind him. He can probably start for two years and get another couple of years as a back-up. There are so many bad back-up QB's in the league that he would be the cream of the crop.
