Andy Reid names Nick Foles the starting quarterback for remainder of season

POSTED: Monday, December 3, 2012, 12:29 PM

Andy Reid named Nick Foles the starting quarterback for the rest of the season, regardless of Michael Vick's health.

"It gives one of your players the opportunity to play here, the next four games, as a starter," Reid said. "Each week, he's been the replacement guy. Now he is the starter, we'll see how he does with that on his plate, see how he handles it. I don't expect much change there with him."

Reid said Vick is on "the fast track" and might return this weekend, although he's still at the fourth phase of the concussion recovery. But Reid said the decision was made in part for Vick's long-term health.

"I think, where we're out, with the season, it gives this kid an opportunity to play and finish it up," Reid said. "He's playing well enough that I think he can win football games for us. Where we sit at this position in the season, it's the right thing to do."

Foles has started the past three games with Vick out with a concussion. In three starts and four total appearances, he completed 60.9 percent of his passes for 739 yards, two touchdowns, and three interceptions.

"I did speak to [Vick], and he was very positive about it," Reid said. "He completely understood. He's on board."

Vick will likely be the No. 2 quarterback when he's healthy. Reid emphasized that Vick's concussion recovery has taken a long time -- Vick is still at the fourth phase of a five-step process and has not passed his ImPACT test -- and wants Vick healthy enough to have a long career.

"He still has three, four years that he can probably get out there, wing it, so let's get him healthy and on right direction there," Reid said.

Reid said he made the decision on Vick without interference from the front office.

"One great thing about the Philadelphia Eagles organization is Jeffrey [Lurie], when Joe [Banner] was here, and Howie [Roseman] and the other general managers were here, they allowed me to make decisions," Reid said. "I understand where you're coming from that you need to know that, but those are my decisions."

All this "dumping" talk, of pro-bowl players... Why would players want to come to this city and give their all. They already get shorted for the $$, then you have to listen to this from many times... short, fat, fast balding, but slow running, guys who never played a down outside of a parking lot....Philly Fans...the jokes on you. How many superbowls have been brought home with that logic?

Once again the no-nothing race-baiters spew nonsense - Let's see about those shorted for $$$

    Vick $100 million (benched)
    Nnamdai $55 million (horrible!)
Babin $28 million (cut - ineffective all season!)
Demetress $34.5 million (benched - cant beat out Dunlap!)

Do I need to go on and include the rest of the non-performing veterans (DRC, Jackson, Dunlap, etc.)? Shorted for $$ - right! I think the Eagles got shorted for talent by singing those contracts - and robbed of the money on top of it!

They have had no problem securing top free agents and several times they have targed and aquired the best free agent on the market. Jon Runyon, Javon Kearse, Nnamdai were all at the top of their free agent classes. Did not always work out for them obviously, but players will come here.

This is an incorrect quote: "He still has three, four years that he can probably get out there, wing it, so let's get him healthy and on right direction there."
This is what he actually said: "He still has three, four years HERE that he can probably get out there, wing it, so let's get him healthy and on right direction there."
Why was the word HERE left out of the true quote????

Ironically Asante Samuel was correct when last year he accused the GM, Howie Roseman, of playing "fantasy football" with personnel decisions.

Who would have thought he would have been correct.

At this point I don't really care if Reid is fired.. Glad he is making a lot of the moves we've been saying needed to be done all season. Maybe he's coming around.

Seems like Reid is getting his instructions from a higher authority now [Lurie]. He isn't being embarrassed by being fired now but he's been told to see what the rookies can do. That's the only thing that can come out of the remainder of the ultra-disappointing season. In any event it's the right move. Gotta know whether QB is at the top of the draft list or not. If Foles is a player then the draft can be D heavy with an OT thrown in near the top. Secondray is mandatory.

Smart move by Andy. Maybe he finally learned that moving to the wide 9 was not a D line strategy but an overall defensive strategy that he did not have either the players or the coaches with know how to implement. The wide 9 requires top of the line safeties who can tackle and cover as well as corners who can stay with their receivers deep and tackle. The Eagles have neither. That's a tall order to fill in one off season too so it did not make sense for the next few years to remain committed to the wide 9. Washburn likely didn't cooperative or agree.
