Andy Reid names Nick Foles the starting quarterback for remainder of season

POSTED: Monday, December 3, 2012, 12:29 PM

Andy Reid named Nick Foles the starting quarterback for the rest of the season, regardless of Michael Vick's health.

"It gives one of your players the opportunity to play here, the next four games, as a starter," Reid said. "Each week, he's been the replacement guy. Now he is the starter, we'll see how he does with that on his plate, see how he handles it. I don't expect much change there with him."

Reid said Vick is on "the fast track" and might return this weekend, although he's still at the fourth phase of the concussion recovery. But Reid said the decision was made in part for Vick's long-term health.

"I think, where we're out, with the season, it gives this kid an opportunity to play and finish it up," Reid said. "He's playing well enough that I think he can win football games for us. Where we sit at this position in the season, it's the right thing to do."

Foles has started the past three games with Vick out with a concussion. In three starts and four total appearances, he completed 60.9 percent of his passes for 739 yards, two touchdowns, and three interceptions.

"I did speak to [Vick], and he was very positive about it," Reid said. "He completely understood. He's on board."

Vick will likely be the No. 2 quarterback when he's healthy. Reid emphasized that Vick's concussion recovery has taken a long time -- Vick is still at the fourth phase of a five-step process and has not passed his ImPACT test -- and wants Vick healthy enough to have a long career.

"He still has three, four years that he can probably get out there, wing it, so let's get him healthy and on right direction there," Reid said.

Reid said he made the decision on Vick without interference from the front office.

"One great thing about the Philadelphia Eagles organization is Jeffrey [Lurie], when Joe [Banner] was here, and Howie [Roseman] and the other general managers were here, they allowed me to make decisions," Reid said. "I understand where you're coming from that you need to know that, but those are my decisions."

That wouldn't be possible even if Reid had an elephant's trunk for a nose.

So that's a wrap. THE DOG KILLER, will never play for the Eagles again. The jerseys, hats, and sweatshirts are ready to be worn again.

Michael Vick has never lost an NFC East game in which he's started and finished as an Eagle, 9-0...yeah, he sucks. But you haters got your wish....a quarterback who "looks the part." Good luck

Lpboys I like Vick as a person and I believe he is tough and has been a good person since he got out. However to ignore the fact that Vick had a good o line,rb, wr's, te, last year and was below average is wrong. Vick is a solid QB but not good enough to win a super bowl. He only has 2 playoff wins in his entire career. That is far from elite and all the Vick die hard supporters can not overlook that. This year the o line killed him, but other than 10 or 11 games here he has been below average. It is not just here also in Atlanta he was very exciting but never elite. I do not like all that jerks on here though that just personally attack him no matter what he has done to fix his life. He has done above and beyond charity and been nothing but a pro since he has arrived. I wish him good luck, but he is on the downside of his career and is very injury prone. I do however think Vick has always been over rated due to how exciting he is. As a QB in this league he really has not put up the #'s or the playoff appearance or wins.

Vick talking smack about this decision? If so - release him. He is never going to get it. He can't be around next season anyway. So - time to cut him. He is useless - and a reminder of the most disappointing Eagles team in a long while They could lure the animal-rights folks back into the fold too.

People saying that the Eagle's had a good O line last season have Altsheimers. They had a good O line the end of last season when they went on a win streak. The first half of the season the O line sucked. They were trying to integrate two rookies into the O line and then had to move Herremans to the tackle position and work in another left guard. On top of that they had no preseason camp and were implementing a new O Line system brought in by Mudd. The O line sucked early in the season and jelled as the season progressed. Peters became a monster and Herreman's adjusted to the move. Kelce became above average quickly.

Most of the wheels are off the train. Few more before it turns into a trackless trolley.

Will you please brush up on your command of the English language? What an embarrassment to public education.
