Andy Reid 'going to look at everything' during bye week
Zach Berman, Inquirer Staff Writer
Andy Reid faces two long weeks before the Eagles play the Atlanta Falcons on Oct. 28. He said he's going to take the time to evaluate everything that has to do with the team. Here Some of his most pressing issues...
- Defensive coordinator Juan Castillo and fourth-quarter defense: The Eagles surrendered a 10-point fourth-quarter lead on Sunday, meaning it's two weeks in a row in which the Eagles failed to a hold. When Reid was asked specifically about whether Castillo will still call plays, he responded, "that's the way I'm looking at it, as I stand here right now."
- Michael Vick's turnovers: Vick has 13 of the Eagles' 17 turnovers, including two interceptions on Sunday. "I'm going to look at all that stuff," Reid said. "I know we can get better at it. And we're going to get better at it."
- Playcalling: The Eagles' pass/run ratio has been out of whack, the linemen are struggling blocking and they lack big plays. Reid was asked if he'll take over playcalling duties from offensive coordinator Marty Mornhinweg. “Listen, like I told you, I’m going to look at everything," Reid said. "I’m going to look at every aspect of it that we have. This covers it. I’m going to look at everything.”
- The pass rush: The Eagles have gone three games without a sack. For a defense built specifically to sack the quarterback, that's astonishing. The Eagles start three linemen north of 30, but Reid did not think they've become too old. "Old by play, I don’t think that right now," Reid said. "We’ve got to get a little better. But I don’t think that’s the reason, no.”
- Slow starts: The Eagles are being outscored, 26-7, in the first quarter. They seem to lack a sense of urgency. "We’re not executing. And then I have to go back and look at, are we giving the guys the right plays to get that done against whatever defense they’re playing against?" Reid said. “I think there’s a sense of urgency. I think the guys are playing hard. I think they’re doing those things. That’s what I see. Now we’ve just got to do better and that encompasses all of us. We’ve all got to do our job. Better take it up a notch.”
Thw Eagles played the 3-4 in the late seventies and early 80s. They were dominant with it in late seventies. On passing downs, it could be a 4 -3 alignment as well. Any defense needs a couple of stars to drive it. Reed, Suggs, Lewis in Baltimore. Polamalu/Harrison/Woodley etc. Steelers. AR has not have all three phases of the game in synch since 2004. His day has passed. But not, Billick, Gruden, Cowher. oldBird
i agree with the comment on Vick's mental state after that vicious high low hit. The announcers mentioned the same thing. Winning football is the little things count. Vick should have been evaluated. He was hurting. But what if Foles comes in a lights up the place ? AR could not handle that. The OT series should get MM fired. On third and forever what ab out a screen so McBriar can make the Lions work instead of handing them the game ? When we need to protect, we cant. When we need to run, we cant. When we need to pass rush, we can't. When we need a a special team play, we can't. Andy not sure what you are looking at but i am very sure of what i see. A very poorly coached team. A team that is still too small. Any team that can carry dead weight pays on special teams. Even if the Eagles make the annual AR December run, Mike Vick will self destruct, it is his fate. oldBird
You would have thought that by now he would have "looked at everything". What n da hell is doing? What a goof head. carlosfunk
Reid looking at everything....That is too funny. Like if he really stumbled across something, he'd know how to fix it. Besides, whatever the problems, they are of his own making. The best thing for him to look at... is the help wanted ads. Its over. He has lost this team. Lets Eat
Reid should have been let go 7 yearsa ago! End of story! lost eagle
Bye Reid. And good riddance to you and those loser assistants of yours. TEDcGEGI
Dream on Lurie gets off on controlling the city's heart with a string. He'll probably bring Big Red back if he goes 9-7 and when he does retire he'll hire Juan Castillo to replace him. They'll still sell out merchandise and season tickets for 20 years, and the forums will still be full of people stating the obvious as Lurie laughs all the way to the bank. It's his toy, and you can't have it. TrollExterminator
Blame it on castillo, which defense has play pretty well, if not for it Eagles record would have been 0-5, Defense was put on tough position at all times, with M. Vick turnovers and offense no scoring points. But hey i guess thats why A.Reid is the boss, if someone should have been blame for his lost, is A.Reid no one has spoken about his time managerment winning by 10 point with 5:18 to go, tries to surprise the Lions with a 60rd pass which gets under throw and intercepted. Well Eagles fan we need a new coach and we need to have A. Reid gone T.K.O
