Akers "taking it in stride"

POSTED: Saturday, April 30, 2011, 1:40 PM

David Akers is a free agent and apparently the Eagles have decided to set the kicker free.

The team drafted kicker Alex Henery in the fourth round of the NFL draft Saturday, a sure sign that Akers' 12-year reign in Philadelphia is over.

"He's taking it in stride," said Jerrold Colton, Akers' agent.

Attempts to reach Akers Saturday were unsuccessful. Colton said Akers was at his kids' youth sports games this morning.

The Eagles tendered a transition tag to Akers in February, but the 36-year-old decline to sign it. Both sides had tried to reach an agreement on an extension in December but talks broke down.

"The Eagles may just be taking precautions," Colton said. "With the labor situation they don't know when free agency will begin. And David is a free agent and he's not under contract."

Akers was voted to his fifth Pro Bowl last season, but missed two field goals in the playoff loss to Green Bay.

I will miss Akers. He is up there with Dawk, Reggie, Westbrook, and Duce as my favorite players of this generation. Jaws, Carmichael, Bergy, Cunningham were great but from another era. Older than that gets before my time.
