Abiamiri's season in jeopardy
Jeff McLane, Inquirer Staff Writer
Defensive end Victor Abiamiri had microfracture knee surgery and isn't expected to return to running until six months after surgery. The oft-injured Eagle underwent the operation on Feb. 9, according to Eagles trainer Rick Burkholder.
That means, best case scenario, Abiamiri, 24, would resume running just after training camp in August. This latest setback makes it unlikely that Abiamiri will be back in time for the season opener. His season, and possibly his career, could be in jeopardy.
"It's a big injury," Burkholder said. "It's knocked some guys out of playing, but plenty of people have come back and played, too. He's got youth on his side."
Dr. James Andrews performed the surgery. Originially, Abiamiri was to have his knee scoped, but Andrews saw that the injury was worse than thought.
"I've been doing what they've been telling me to do," Abiamiri said. "It's a tough process to go through, but all you can do is take it day to day."
The injury stems from a shot to the knee that he took in the Oakland game last season. He missed the next three games, but did return for the rest of the season.
Abiamiri has yet to play a full season since the Eagles selected him in the second round of the 2007 draft. In 2008, he missed the first five games of the season due to a dislocated wrist. He then sat out the final game of the season with a Lisfrance foot sprain. He also missed most of last year's training camp with a back injury.
"I know that I've been hurt a lot since I've been here," Abiamiri said. "When I got hurt during the season, I was like, 'I'm just going to play through it.' It was bothering me through the season, but I figured I'd get it fixed at the end of the season. And I did. It's just that the amount of the time it takes for it to heal up is pretty extensive."
Should have just stuck a fork in him Luriesucks
Obviously the team knew this before draft day, thus taking three 3 DE's in the first 5 rounds. Look out for Ricky Sapp, he might put Abiamiri out of a job permanently. rob808pf- I would think his future with the Eagles is in jeopardy too! Ohmy
Noooooooooooooo Bex- McNabb did Abiamiri a huge disservice and never pushed Abiamiri to become a greater player. With Kolb we will never have this problem again. Kolb will push this team and grab this team as a true leader and a true All-American. Abiamiri don't worry get healthy bro and when your healthy we can ease you back as we now have a QB who will put points on the board and not have you playing the entire game from behind.
PUP to start season fman727
Jerome McDougle? PhillyTru- lonewolf 10, are you Kolb's wife? That's the only nice way to explain these tender loving posts about our new quarterback. Yikes!! mjc1
But wouldn't forcing a DE to play from behind push the guy to become a greater player? Honestly, let it go, troll. Just let. it. go. allfreakinready. "Bro." ahab
Looks like he will be put on the PUP list for the year..He never can stay healthy.. Not a big loss for us. Even if healthy, he was a question mark to make the squad. bradco
He has done nothing with his time here. it does not matter if his season is in jeopardy because there is no season for him because he is going to get cut/ release and be looking for a job. He has never been able to say healthy and another draft bust. briandawkins20
Hey philly.com, you need to get rid of the obnoxious video widget on your sports section. It's complete BS that you force us to watch/listen to your videos. No other normal site on the Internet plays such a petty game with its visitors. I'm writing Google and asking them to keep flagging your lame site, and I urge other readers to do the same. ahab- Par for the course for the Eagles. If the player isn't recovering from sort of surgery, he can't be an Eagle.
- This warrants front page coverage on the website?
busted... lonewolf what does mcnabb have to do with victor taking a shot to the knee in the raiders game last year???? Its a shame because you can't really expect any of the rookies to come in and be impact players this year, it usually takes 3-5 years for DE's to become impact players...I was hoping abiamiri would have a big year this year. jc2178
