Eagles add safety Jones

POSTED: Friday, March 6, 2009, 3:39 PM

The Eagles have signed safety Sean Jones to a one-year deal worth $3 million.

"It feels good to be an Eagle," Jones said at a news conference to announce his signing. "I think I'm turning a new leaf in my NFL career."

Jones, a 2004 second-round pick by the Cleveland Browns, has 14 interceptions the last three years, but he found his first venture into the NFL free-agent market lukewarm after missing four games last season with an injury to his right knee that required arthroscopic surgery.

"I didn't want to sign a long-term deal with a team that I didn't feel like was family," Jones said. "A one-year deal here right now, I will be able to just come out and showcase my talent and hopefully we can let everything iron itself out from there."

Jones, who played primarily strong safety in Cleveland, said he can also play free safety, the position vacated when Brian Dawkins signed with the Denver Broncos last week.

"I like playing strong, but we have Quintin Mikell already at strong," Jones said. "I don't know how they're going to do it. There is a lot of talent in the defensive backfield here in Philly. Hopefully I can come in where that void is from missing Dawkins. Hopefully I will become a great player."

"if this is a "prove it" deal, why 4 years for Andrews off a bad knee? Position market?" Likely because They have a lot of money spent on Shawn and they want to make sure they have the best SHRINK they can find for him, i.e. his brother.

To MiJou6, Sean Jones is that picked off DMac and ran the pick the other way before he pulled down by Hank Basket. I like the signing. Dawkins is longer here people, so get over it. While still love Bdawks, I still think he was becoming a liability in pass coverage.

Couple of things: Mikell's "natural" position was Free Safety, NOT Strong Safety. He wasn't going to take Dawk's FS position, but he definitely earned the playing time at Safety, so he becomes the SS. This is really an ideal situation: you have 3 safeties working for 2 spots. May the best two win. If nothing else, with his size and cover ability, Sean Jones would make an ideal Nickel LB. Also, if he's as good as a run-stopper as he should be at his size, he'd almost automatically be the 2nd Safety in run situations. /////// I like the 1-year deal, too. Not too much risked if he turns out to NOT be any better than Mikell or Demps... (or NOT able to pick up the D) but it gives the Eagles the first shot if they decide that they like him. Smart move on Sean Jones' part, too; 2010 is looking to be an uncapped year. If he has a good year, he could be looking at a huge payday next year.

Hey Cleveland fan/Eagles fan: Can he cover guys or not? If he can, use the inverted two deep with him. If he can't cover, he's Michael Lewis...a liability.

Pedal to the medal! Gold standard! What a franchise. P.S. We should have gotten Haynesworth as this D can't pressure QBs without blitzing.
