Eagles work out OL Chris Williams

POSTED: Wednesday, October 17, 2012, 11:51 AM

Did Juan Castillo get a fair shake?
Yes. He had his chance to run the defense and came up short.
No. He was an offensive line coach who was thrust into the wrong job.

The Eagles brought offensive lineman Chris Williams in for a workout a day after he was released by the Bears, an NFL source said.

NFL tryouts that don't result in signings are common, but the Williams visit to the NovaCare Complex is intriguing because of his experience and because the Eagles have a number of issues on their offensive line.

The 6-foot-6, 315-pound Williams, a 2008 first round pick out of Vanderbilt, has 38 career starts over more than four seasons. While he was drafted as a left tackle, Williams started 20 games at left guard. He did not start this season, however, and was inactive for the last two games.

Maybe a system change could help him be productive? I don't know as an Eagles fan I would like to find something positive to say. Then again, my mom did say if you can't say something nice then don't say anything. Goodbye.

SALARY CAP CONSIDERATIONS IN THE OFF SEASON ARE THE ONLY REASONS A TEAM LETS A GOOD OFFENSIVE LINEMAN GO.
NOBODY LETS A QUALITY ONE GO AT THIS TIME IN THE SEASON

We need more O-linemen. I'd check out anyone who has some potential. Period. When you start to complain about the Oline, ask yourself, Where else are you going to add depth halfway thru the season???

This line has regressed under Mudd, could it been that he had Payton Manning under the center who got rid of the ball in a hurry that made the Colts line look good, and plus they had a real gm who knew talent, I'am just wondering.

How come an ex-O-lineman (Reid) has the worst O-line in the game. Can't even draft those guys effectively? They are going to need Watkins to put out the flames when this teams season goes down in flames. Women, children and Juan out first...

It is kind of funny how many people now remember McNabb fondly. I used to get on here and defend him. The guy worked wonders behind a suspect o-line. Sure, he threw the occasional dirtball grounder, but he marched the Eagles deep into the playoffs pretty much every year he was the starter. Who knows what he would have accomplished with a running game and NFL wide receivers not named T.O. Maybe the current adversity will bring this Eagles team together.

Obviously meant to say that they're NOT "Mudd-ers."

Interesting how Winston Justice and even Austin Howard, don't look so bad right now. Oh wait ... they're "Mudd-ers."

    Nevermind.

Jamaal Jackson isn't retired. Might not be in shape either.
However you gotta look to see what he has left. How about Casey Wiegmann ?

What a mess. How did we get this bad? I swear I cant decide whether it would be better to flush the season, can the coach and start over, or continue to support a truly dysfunctional team....

@zeru: You mean Demetress Bell and the Drells of Houston, Texas? They don't only sing, but they dance just as good as they want.

I live in chicago and watch the bears. This guy is absolutely horrible. I mean HORRIBLE. The bears are a good team, except for their o line. This guy can't start in a horrible line. He almost got cutler killed about half a dozen times. If the birds play him, i can only assume it's because they want to end vicks season.

A cardboard cutout of an OLineman would be an improvement over Watkins!

macd. I agree. I saw this on ESPN and actually hoped they would at least try him out. He has to be better than Bell.

Why not add another First Round Offensive lineman bust? Our fireman needs some more hose to play with! They can suck together on the line. In a year or two Watkins will be joining Williams as another first round O-Lineman released.

I wonder what position they're thinking of using this guy? If he's a bust at left tackle, he's not replacing Bell. If he can't make o-line calls, he's not playing center. So is Reid thinking about benching either Mathis or Watkins? Or would he simply be a signing for depth.

Why don't they just resign Jammal Jackson. He's still available and he knows the line calls. Has to be an upgrade over Reynolds

because the Bears always have such a deep great O-line, just ask Cutler.

Don't we have enough of our own first round busts on the roster? Then again, he can't be any worse than anyone on this line not named Herremans, and even Herremans was brutal on Sunday.
    Only in Philly...

"...Williams was drafted 14th overall out of Vanderbilt in 2008. The Bears tried him at left guard for two years after failing at left tackle, but threw in the towel on that project in the second half of last season. It speaks volumes that Williams was unable to beat out J'Marcus Webb, one of the league's most inconsistent blindside protectors..."

1st round draft picks don't usually get cut after a couple of years. Obviously he wasn't getting the job done for the Bears. "Coaching him up" is probably wishful thinking, but who knows? ...

Juan should be are new o line coach or at least share duties in some capacity with Mudd. Herremans LT Mathis LG Reynolds C Watkins RG Dunlap/Kelley RT. Make Mudd special assistant.

Of course armchairGM the same way Reid coached up Vick, Young Feeley and Kolb. In fact the only player who was more than a 1 year wonder was McNabb. Kinda makes you wonder who was holding who back

Was considered very promising out of college. I wonder if Mudd thinks he can coach him up.
