Eagles met with RGIII

POSTED: Friday, February 24, 2012, 4:03 PM

Quarterback Robert Griffin III wowed reporters with his poise, confidence and sense of humor Friday, and then dropped a little surprise: he met with the Eagles Thursday night.

Griffin, expected to be drafted as high as number two overall, was asked about his schedule and volunteered the info, noting that his next meetings are with Cleveland and Kansas City, two teams with considerably larger quarterback needs.

It's a surprise, but I wouldn't read too much into it for the Eagles. Likely they are doing their due diligence so they can be prepared just in case there is some unlikely turn of events that puts Griffin within reach -- maybe an unexpected tumble down draft boards, or a trade offer from a team picking early. The Eagles are here anyway, and it's hard to see what they would lose by taking the time to meet Griffin.

They have three picks in the first two rounds, so they have ammunition to move up, but, again, it would be a surprise if they would try to draft a top tier quarterback. For one thing, Andy Reid needs a big year, so drafting a prospect to sit for a season behind Mike Vick doesn't make much sense when they need someone who can make an immediate impact. (The Eagles have to pay Vick for 2012, so he's not going anywhere).

More importantly, I've long argued that if there is a coaching change approaching soon -- either through Reid's choice or management's -- it doesn't make sense to let Reid pick the next franchise quarterback. Whoever takes over next will have his own vision and want his own man to lead the team, not a leftover from the previous regime. It wouldn't be wise to invest in a young franchise quarterback only to have to change course again in a few years.

So while the Griffin interview perked up my ears when I heard about it, I doubt we'll see him wearing green this year.

I hope they do draft RG3 if they can.. but I think he is way out of reach in regards to the return the Rams would be looking for. Particularly being number 15 overall. But the Eagles could sweeten the pot because we do have good talent on the roster.

Problem is that we would still need a middle linebacker.

Yeah.. A Jewish guy from Boston and a Mormon from California are racially biased against white quarterbacks when they only drafted ONE black one who happened to be the franchises face for 12 years.

    Yeah you're about bright..

Two thoughts.....One, the defense really needs help.....Two, howie and Joe are salavating at the number of cheap 6th and 7th round picks they can get for all those first round picks.....ah, the sweet smell of money under the cap......good job howie and Joe...

I hope Trent rested up and got smarter, he will be filling in before game #6. as for RGIII being drafted by Andy, that will not happen, first you could not afford the price to move up, and secondily the quarterback guru has identefied an unknown talent from way far, far away East Armpit that we will be spending out 2nd round draft pick on as our quarterback of the future, it worked so well the last time! Time is running out on this regime, I was 10 years old when we won our last championship, one man, one city can not endure this much sustained punishment, Jeffery, get your pointy head out of your nether region, and help us out! One more Super Bowl victory for an NFC team East that does not play in Philadelphia will send me and Philly over the edge! You wonder why we Boo in Philly, 12 Super Bowl rings in the NFC EAST, Phila. does not own one, enough already..

When it comes to Quarterbacks, Reid and Lurie are racially biased. They most certainly are looking for a way to get RG III, Roseman all but said the other day that taking a QB early over a LB is on the table.

Knowing how many coaches come and go and never get their hands on a franchise QB, methinks the logic that Reid may be gone soon and therefore the Eagles won't invest in a future star is ludicrous. Any new coaching candidate they might hope to lure to Philadelphia will have many questions. The first "How much you offering?" The second "Who's your QB?"

As much as I would like to see Reid outta here, it is not happening. Fat Andy will be here as long as he likes.

Surprised so many of you got a rise out of this news. Well, surprised probably isn't the word I'm looking for. Due diligence man. That's all this is. Cam Newton's year will help RGIII's hype machine.

I wouldn't assume Reid is leaving after next season. The Eagles should be a pretty good team, and wiil stand a decent chance of making a SB run.

Just once I'd like to see them with an intelligent pocket passing QB.

The Eagles NEVER interview players they end up drafting.

This is typical Andy Reid trying to outsmart everybody and throw everyone off so they can pick an undersized defense pass rusher with a high motor to join his gold standard team. GET READY TO BE AMAZED NFL!

itzjake agree with you in that running QB's can make for an exciting game to watch, but come January when they are banged up, its the teams with the standard drop pack pocket QB's that make it to the big dance.

As much as Id love to have RGIII as an Eagle, it ain't gonna happen. All teams interview players they're never going to draft, it's all smoke and mirrors.

RGIII, will be better than andrew luck. Mark my words, Well he will probably succeed better in the nfl. I just don't see the big thing with Luck, anyone else? Oh wait, he's the next best thing thats comparable to peyton manning. There is one thing you can't fake and that is speed and accuracy and RGIII has both. Didn't think he was 6'2 though.

ANYDAY now these gadget quarterbacks will take over the NFL. Please stop the experiments and let me know when one of these multi talented "weapon" guys wins the SB. The mold is out there for a winner, see Eli, Payton, Brees, Rodgers, Brady.. etc...

Probably would take Samuels their first round and 2 second round picks to move up to take him. That would be a no brainer for them since they like the bottom half of the draft better anyway.

If Griffin had some sort of major knee injury, this meeting might've actually meant something.

"....if there is a coaching change approaching soon,it doesn't make sense to let Reid pick the next franchise quarterback.

DUHHH...there WON'T be a coaching change anytime soon. RGIII is Reid's ticket for staying another five years.

Vick's guarantees run out exactly when RGIII is fully groomed to take over. They will trade Asante, DeSean, the #15 pick and a second round pick to take RGIII. They can pick up Randy Moss, and with the free cap room, they can get MARIO WILLIAMS at OLB. OHHH YES!

IF THE EAGLES WERE LOOKING TO MOVE UP IT WOULD BE TO TAKE A TALENT LIKE BLACKMON NOT A QB!

If the Eagles had been smart, they would have lost the last 4 games. Then there would be a chance of drafting RGIII. Now they'll have to be content with drafting R2D2.

Why is it that the two teams (Eagles and Flyers) with the best secure revenues (i.e. season tix sales) have not won a Championship in +50yrs and +30 yrs respectively?

You missed one crucial point. Roseman and Banner aren't going anywhere, no matter what happens to Reid.

Who knows if this kid can play, but Vick probably doesn't have anything more than one year left in his tank as a starter.

This meeting isn't insignificant. They wouldn't waste their time if they weren't interested in considering making something happen. Someone is going to move into the RAMS spot and take RGIII for sure---there is no way this guy is slipping out of the top 5 spots. Are they meeting with Andrew Luck or any of the other top 5 prospects?

It may be a need but it's not this years pressing need, saying that, wouldn't surprize anyone if they somehow drafted him, this is the Eagles we're talking about, just sayin'...

Like I said yesterday ...lets draft an athletic QB that will not last a full 16 game season in the NFL. Awesome.

The same sort of story was posted when Vick was on the market a few years ago and the Eagles shocked everyone by signing him. If the Eagles are good at anything, it's keeping their plans from the local press.

They keep their plans from everybody else because they're smarter than everybody else! They were so smart they bid against themselves and gave Vick 100 million.

Here we go. They're gonna use their other 2nd round pick to trade up to get a better version of McNabb :)
