Eagles met with RGIII

POSTED: Friday, February 24, 2012, 4:03 PM

Quarterback Robert Griffin III wowed reporters with his poise, confidence and sense of humor Friday, and then dropped a little surprise: he met with the Eagles Thursday night.

Griffin, expected to be drafted as high as number two overall, was asked about his schedule and volunteered the info, noting that his next meetings are with Cleveland and Kansas City, two teams with considerably larger quarterback needs.

It's a surprise, but I wouldn't read too much into it for the Eagles. Likely they are doing their due diligence so they can be prepared just in case there is some unlikely turn of events that puts Griffin within reach -- maybe an unexpected tumble down draft boards, or a trade offer from a team picking early. The Eagles are here anyway, and it's hard to see what they would lose by taking the time to meet Griffin.

They have three picks in the first two rounds, so they have ammunition to move up, but, again, it would be a surprise if they would try to draft a top tier quarterback. For one thing, Andy Reid needs a big year, so drafting a prospect to sit for a season behind Mike Vick doesn't make much sense when they need someone who can make an immediate impact. (The Eagles have to pay Vick for 2012, so he's not going anywhere).

More importantly, I've long argued that if there is a coaching change approaching soon -- either through Reid's choice or management's -- it doesn't make sense to let Reid pick the next franchise quarterback. Whoever takes over next will have his own vision and want his own man to lead the team, not a leftover from the previous regime. It wouldn't be wise to invest in a young franchise quarterback only to have to change course again in a few years.

So while the Griffin interview perked up my ears when I heard about it, I doubt we'll see him wearing green this year.

Here we go. They're gonna use their other 2nd round pick to trade up to get a better version of McNabb :)

The same sort of story was posted when Vick was on the market a few years ago and the Eagles shocked everyone by signing him. If the Eagles are good at anything, it's keeping their plans from the local press.

They keep their plans from everybody else because they're smarter than everybody else! They were so smart they bid against themselves and gave Vick 100 million.

Like I said yesterday ...lets draft an athletic QB that will not last a full 16 game season in the NFL. Awesome.

It may be a need but it's not this years pressing need, saying that, wouldn't surprize anyone if they somehow drafted him, this is the Eagles we're talking about, just sayin'...

This meeting isn't insignificant. They wouldn't waste their time if they weren't interested in considering making something happen. Someone is going to move into the RAMS spot and take RGIII for sure---there is no way this guy is slipping out of the top 5 spots. Are they meeting with Andrew Luck or any of the other top 5 prospects?

You missed one crucial point. Roseman and Banner aren't going anywhere, no matter what happens to Reid.

Who knows if this kid can play, but Vick probably doesn't have anything more than one year left in his tank as a starter.

Why is it that the two teams (Eagles and Flyers) with the best secure revenues (i.e. season tix sales) have not won a Championship in +50yrs and +30 yrs respectively?

If the Eagles had been smart, they would have lost the last 4 games. Then there would be a chance of drafting RGIII. Now they'll have to be content with drafting R2D2.

IF THE EAGLES WERE LOOKING TO MOVE UP IT WOULD BE TO TAKE A TALENT LIKE BLACKMON NOT A QB!

DUHHH...there WON'T be a coaching change anytime soon. RGIII is Reid's ticket for staying another five years.

Vick's guarantees run out exactly when RGIII is fully groomed to take over. They will trade Asante, DeSean, the #15 pick and a second round pick to take RGIII. They can pick up Randy Moss, and with the free cap room, they can get MARIO WILLIAMS at OLB. OHHH YES!

If Griffin had some sort of major knee injury, this meeting might've actually meant something.

Probably would take Samuels their first round and 2 second round picks to move up to take him. That would be a no brainer for them since they like the bottom half of the draft better anyway.
