Report: Spagnuolo expected back to Eagles by end of the week
Jeff McLane, Inquirer Staff Writer
Steve Spagnuolo is expected to return to the Eagles by the end of the week, Jason LaCanfora of NFL Network reported.
LaCanfora, citing NFL sources, wrote that Spagnuolo would likely replace embattled defensive coordinator Juan Castillo, perhaps not in name, but as the leader of the Eagles defense.
LaCanfora, though, told Ruben Frank of CSNPhilly earlier today that he was reporting that Spagnuolo would visit Philadelphia by the end of the week, not that the former Rams head coach was going to be hired by the Eagles in that time span.
If Spagnuolo is heading to the area, he may show up at Eagles headquarters and find an empty NovaCare Complex. Most of the Eagles decision-makers are on vacation this week. Eagles coach Andy Reid is away until Sunday, a source close to the situation said, so it is unlikely that any coaching changes will be announced before Sunday.
Reid, of course, was able to mastermind overhauling his coaching staff while he was away on a Caribbean vacation last January.
Spagnuolo is currently also on a vacation with his wife (at the same location as Reid?) but is expected to return tomorrow. He was fired by the Rams last week after three years as head coach. Spagnulo spent eight years with the Eagles as a defensive assistant, but left in 2007 to become the New York Giants' defensive coordinator.
If Spagnuolo does not replace Castillo as coordinator he could be named an assistant head coach along with offensive coordinator Marty Mornhinweg. If Castillo is out in his current position, he could fill the vacany at secondary coach after Johnnie Lynn was fired last week.
Former Eagles safety Quintin Mikell, who played under Spagnuolo last season in St. Louis, said last week that he thought his former coach would end up back in Philadelphia. Mikell said that Spagnuolo, as head coach, may have missed calling plays.
- Don't forget the Head Coach - he's had 13 years and he's still trying to get it done!

If Spags does come here say goodbye to Washburn and the wide9, two totally different schemes that don't mesh. Or course, it would also make Philly a bit more attractive to a top-tier LB, none of whom would want to come here if they had to completely alter their style of play to read off the d-linemen. stikolaboloni
I certainly hope not. The last thing this teams is more discontinuity and change. The defense improved throughout the year and the Iggles are 2 good LBs, a consistent CB and 20 less turnovers away from representing the NFC in the SB. Last I checked, the defense didn't commit a plethora of turnovers in the Red Zone directly leading to 4 losses this year. Hiring Spags is a feel good measure for all of the lemmings who listen and believe what WIP and 97.5 are selling. Don't trust these snake oil salesmen who've never led anything or participated in any team sports in their collective, loud-mouthed, meaningless lives. IdahoMoose- The only reason it appeared that the defense "improved" was the string of half-rate teams (kind of like the Eagles) that they played the last four weeks of the season. You are the true lemming believing whatever the coaching staff and FO tells you! Hell, even the owner called the final few weeks of the season "Fool's Gold"...I guess you're a fool!

I can see them going the assistant hc route with Spags and Marty. Keep them both happy. Don't know if Marty thinks he can get the HC job if Andy is gone but I doubt it. I don't know if Spags could tho. This way Reid and Castillo save face. Spags get a bigger title but trains Castillo. If Spags gets a HC gig elsewhere after a few years Castillo will be better prepared to take over the D. Commonesnes
LIke the idea of Spags as Assistant HC IF he keeps the wide nine. It was the only part of the Eagles D that was successful. Do not scrap it! Your D line is in good shape if you keep the wide nine. The D line personnel are a good fit for it. Commonesnes- Ease up on the hate for Juan Castillo. Any one of you would have taken that job if offered just like he did. I think he handled himself pretty well considering the circumstances and I would not have any problem with him taking a reduced role on the staff. He was about as professional as you can be and the unit did get better as the season progressed. As for the talent he had to work with why is Howie Roseman still GM?

wow@ these fans..this is the worst fanbase. i bet if the eagles won a championship u guys would still find something to complain about and at the same time cheer them on in the process..smh..how can u get mad at avant and rollins when they're right. u guys are nothing but bandwagon jumpers. a fan cheers their team on win lose or draw. not bash them every chance they get. our home games are like road games and u hear more booing then cheering. good play happens u hear half azzed cheers, a bad play happens u hear boos the loudest. then wonder why we have a bad home record..smh..why do people think the wide nine cant be incorporated with another style of defense. thats why coaches get pd the big bucks and u all are sitting on ur couches trying to play coach, owner and gm on a message board. losers! bigjay215- Please stay in Dallas!

@ dragoon6, am I the only one who gets your post ? Very funny ! I guess I'm dating myself. phillyjim7
now all we need are three NFL starter level LBs and two safeties.

Now let Spags have a say in which Linebacker gets drafted with the #1 pick and ask Castillo if he has any experience in ticket sales. No experience Juan, no problem, we'll make you VP in charge of ticket sales. I believe that's how the Eagles system works! younged
