Reid hasn't spoken to Lurie about future

POSTED: Monday, December 26, 2011, 5:42 PM

Which Eagles player has had the most disappointing season?
Michael Vick.
DeSean Jackson.
Nnamdi Asomugha.
Asante Samuel.

Andy Reid, during his Monday press conference, struck a different note than he did Saturday following the Eagles' 20-7 win over the Cowboys when he focused on positives of the victory despite the team being eliminated from the playoffs.

Reid was asked if he viewed the Eagles not making the postseason as something explainable considering the NFL lockout and the many changes the team endured or if he viewed it as a serious shortcoming.

“I’ll never sit up here and make excuses; that’s not how I operate, so I’m not going to start now," Reid said. "I’ll take full responsibility for that. I think we all expected — players and coaches — to have a better record than we have today. So that’s my responsibility, and to say anything less I’d be wrong saying that.”

Reid did say that he preferred for his team look at the current three-game winning steak and the positives down the stretch and not the many blown opportunities from earlier in the season.

“I would take it with a glass half full and say you want to build on the positives and take it into the offseason and take it into this week and continue to get better," Reid said.

The Eagles will miss the playoffs for the first time since 2007. It will be the fourth time in Reid's 13 seasons that he failed to reach the postseason. He hasn't won a playoff game since 2008 and, of course, will go another year without getting the Eagles that elusive Super Bowl.

Reid, who has two years left on his contract, was asked if he sensed that the clock on his opportunities to win a title in Philadelphia may be ticking away.

“I really don’t look at that," Reid said with the Eagles still one game away from the offseason. "When you’re striving to win every game and to win a Super Bowl every year, I don’t look at all of that stuff. So you just focus in on what you can do and try to get better every week, so that’s my focus.”

Reid said he hasn't yet spoken to owner Jeffrey Lurie about his future, and he declined to answer questions about whether he thought he would be back or whether he wants to be back.

"I wouldn't know what to do without having these press conferences," he joked.

He also stayed away from endorsing defensive coordinator Juan Castillo and wide receiver DeSean Jackson, two pieces that some believe won't return for 2012.

Of Castillo, Reid said, "You guys know what I think of Juan. I know you have to ask that question, but we are focused completely on the Washington Redskins."

And of Jackson, Reid said, "The last how many games he's done a heck of a job. He's playing very good football right now. I'm proud of him for that."

Reid said that he'll play his starters in Sunday's season finale against the Redskins.

"It’s an opportunity to play another game against a good football team and make yourself better as a team and as an individual and that’s what you do," Reid said.

INJURIES

-- Cornerback Asante Samuel missed Saturday's game with a hamstring strain and will be a stretch to play Sunday in the season finale, a team source said. With his future with the Eagles in doubt, Samuel may have played his last game with the team.

-- Safety Kurt Coleman has a bicep strain and will not have an MRI until Tuesday. If it's a muscle tear Coleman's season is over and Jaiquawn Jarrett will have another opportunity to start.

-- LeSean McCoy has a "slight ankle sprain, but he'll be fine," Reid said. There was a report speculating that the Eagles running back would be shut down for the season, but Reid said that wasn't true.

-- Linebacker Brian Rolle has a slight ankle sprain. Defensive tackle Trevor Laws, who sat out the Cowboys game, still has knee tendinitis.

What is to talk about....he isn't going anywhere folks......the team is making money off of dopey fans who open their wallets for an inferior product....Joseph banner is very happy with the bottom line, they do not need to win a super bowl to keep the dumb fan base spending money......everything is just fine.......

The view from Lurie's seat is pretty complicated.
With regard to Reid, I actually think there's a decent chance (say 35%?) that he will resign after the season.

What other Eagle coach has a better record than Andy Reid? What other coach out there could do a better job than Andy? Be careful what you pray for, you'll be screaming for Andy to return if he is let go.

What other Eagles coach has been given the same opportunity as Reid. (THIRTEEN) years of futility and teasing, and almosts, and, "wait 'til next years"? And, beleive it brother, there are plenty of coaches out there who could do just as good, if not better, job as Reid. The 49rs didn't have any trouble finding a new coach. The Atlanta Falcons didn't have any trouble finding a new coach. The Green Bay Packers didn't have trouble finding a new coach. The New Orleans Saints didn't have any trouble finding a new coach. The Detroit Lions didn't have any trouble finding a new coach. The New York Jets didn't have any trouble finding a new coach. The Pittsburgh Steelers didn't have any trouble finding a new coach. The Baltimore Ravens didn't have any trouble finding a new coach and they are ALL going to be in the playoffs. After thirteen years, you people have developed an extreme and unusual attachment to a coach whom you, erroneously, think is irreplaceable, has reached his limit, and is too obstinate to adjust and who because of that obstinancy will NEVER, EVER win a Super Bowl as head coach of the Eagles. It's way past time for a change and NEW ideas.

Nothing to talk about, nothing to report, no information of any value at all...and OF COURSE a Philly sports writer starts typing anyway.

The worst sports coverage in America, if not the world.

I'll fess up here. I really think AR's time should be up. No clue who should replace him though. I won't speculate and throw out names of re-treads and people who have not coached in ages. Time for a new voice. It looks like complacency has set in. They seem to think 8-8 is not so bad.

49ers got a new coach this season...and the 49ers put in a new system, with new coaches and no off system to help them...guess what, the 49ers have a great record and are in the playoffs...while Reid and the Eagles have failed again after 13 consecutive seasons....LOL.

Being satisfied with mediocrity has become commonplace in Eagleland. I would clean house after an 8-8 year just on principle!

You are right...Reid and his players are very happy to be a medicre 8-8...they are fat and happy with a 8-8 record and no playoffs.....it's time to get a hungry coach who considers 8-8 and no playoffs a complete FAILURE.

So does that mean the 49ers will have failed if they don't win the Super Bowl this year? Eagles fans are spoiled. Andy Reid has been so good for so long that the occasional 8-8 or 7-9 year is viewed as a failure. That's the NFL, folks.

What has been amazing is how consistent these teams have been. Throw out Reid's first year, when he took over a disaster, and he's been in the playoffs 9 our of 12 years.

The real frustration is no Super Bowls. But if you're going to blow everything up and get a new coach, you better make sure you get one who is going to be better. Unless you tell me Bill Belichick or Tony Dungy are going to come here, you can't be confident the Birds will be any better off. And they might be a whole lot worse.

Yes, it is a COMPLETE failure to not win the Superbowl! That is what this league is all about - the SUPERBOWL! It's not about 13-3 seasons and getting to the Championship game, or going 16-0, or going 1-15 - IT IS ALL ABOUT THE SUPERBOWL!

You are one of the reasons why the Eagles will not change, you are satisfied with mediocrity! I'm sure you are still buying the Eagles gear, going to the games, and lining their pockets with money!

Wake up! Reid would have been fired in any other town!

I almost hope they get rid of Andy and replace him with the kind of coach that reflects this fan base. A loud mouthed braggard with beer muscles would be much better and either Rex or Rob Ryan would fill the bill.

Heck, this fan base LOVED Buddy Ryan and he was a moron who couldn't win ONE PLAYOFF GAME even though he had an All Pro defense. He sure could talk and brag and flex his beer muscles, though.

Rob or Rex would be great for WIP and The Fanatic too. Those dopes want a coach who gives them quotes and throws players under the Acela. Rex or Rob are their guys.

Perhaps a decade of REAL losing would be good for the drunks who infest the Linc and all of the bars in Philly. Then they would really have something to cry in their beer about.

49ers were a lousy team for years....now their new coach who was coaching in COLLEGE last year, has them win their division and in the playoffs...that's called IMPROVING....but Reid has been here for THIRTEEN years his last three years his teams have gotten WORST EVERY YEAR...that's called going BACKWARD...which is why Reid should be fired....period.

Andy Reid hasnt been good against the elite teams throughout his tenure. He may have an overall winning record, but he has a losing record against teams that finish with a winning record. He also has something on the lines of a 4-16 record against AFC teams that make the playoffs. Also, his defensive drafting the last few years has been atrocious. Brandon Graham, when healthy has been terrible, yet Earl Thomas and Jason Pierre-Paul are on the road to a Pro Bowl in year 2. Reid missed out on LBs such as Navarro Bowman and Sean Lee to grab stiffs such as Nate Allen (everytime he takes a step forward, it seems like he takes a step back..) and Jaiquan Jarrett (projected 4th rounder taken in the 2nd. Homer pick). I am ready for a change. If a change means that the next two years are losing records, then so be it as long as there is CHANGE. Still, Reid will be back because of the $$ owed to him for the next two years, so get ready for the PR spin on how the shortened off-season hurt this team and its chances.

Hey Jeff tell the truth I heard you ask Reid had he talked to Lurie about the upcoming year, you also said you had heard that Reid had discussed with Lurie about his position for the upcoming year. You didn't like the answer so you came up with this stupid article. I guess that knock Les Bowen gave you in the back of your head, has you hearing things, and losing a bit of your memory. Hey and btw I am still waiting on one of you hot shot reporters to do a story on Conlin, you do remember him don't you. I would think child molestation is a lot more serious than what is going on, on a football field.....................wouldn't you.

As long as Lurie is making money, he could care less about Wins and Losses. His favorite teams are the Patriots and Red Sox. The Eagles are just a tax write off to him. Jeffrey lets Christina call all the shots for the Birds. Christina says she likes making the 1st round pick for the team every year and also evaluating Player's performance with Howie the Accountant. Howie doesn't know anything about football and neither do I, we think alike says Christina!

Bigmowash are you the same guy saying be careful what you wish for when Mcnabb was on his way out??? Boy oh boy we sure would be great if we still had that tub....2 years later and the guy can't even start in the league.......it's pretty obvious to me that Reid's window is closed. Getting a new coach may not win a championship but we are not going anywhere with mr Walrus........ oh and ESFjellin....you are dead on.......as successful as Reid has been, his teams are a disgrace against the elite teams in the NFl

If you want to throw out the 1st year, maybe you can throw out 2008, as well. In 2008, the Eagles took advantage of several teams' collapses to not only make the playoffs(fortunate), but also reach the NFC championship game(VERY fortunate). After the game, the usual suspects(McNabb, Jim Johnson) were blamed, just so Reid would get credit for a 5th NFC championship game appearance(and no blame for the loss). Certainly, the Eagles could do worse, but NO team in this town EVER won a title when they were too lazy to move on from a teflon coach(or player). If the Flyers can play well without Richards, the Eagles can move on from Reid.

The chaotic offseason was supposed to work to the Eagles advantage. Just ask them in June. Rookies and newcomers like Hue Jackson, John Fox, Jim Harbaugh, Mike Munchak, and Jason Garret all put their new teams in better positions to succeed than Reid did with all of his experience and supposed greatness.

Like anything else,it's gonna depend on the alternatives. If Lurie sees options,he just may kick AR upstairs or out. Recent Eagle history says we have at least one more year of Andy.Who's out there that Lurie would like? An old coach with a Super Bowl will want too much power for this FO.Ya gotta think like them...who's young, fresh, smart and a winner?
If there are no obvious answers,we will have AR for awhile.

i stand firm and still say fire Fat Andy. Nothing has changed with these latest victories. Nothing will change next year if Fat Boy is still the coach = no Super Bowl. Appointing Juan as defensive coordinator still shows just how STUPID Fat Boy really is. Enough said.
