When Bill Pickens 3rd discovered the unmarked graves of his great, great grandparents Monday he dropped to all fours, pressing his face so close to the ground that he could have kissed it.

A powerful moment.

And a bizarre photo, that didn't make it into the paper.

I shot it while following him on a field trip to further document his blood line, which traces to the union of Philadelphia's first mayor's son and a former slave named Cremona.
