Kick The Boards And Pound the Glass

Can we cue up "The Orange and The Black" again?

Can we say the Flyers are skating into the playoffs with some mo' after all?

Can we agree that their date with the Buffalo Sabres means they miss being pitchforked by the hottest team in hockey?

For a while last night, with the Flyers storming the New York Islanders, and the Devils down 3-1 to Montreal, it looked like Philadelphia's road to the Stanley Cup would have to be routed through New Jersey.

That same New Jersey team that had flattened the Flyers Sunday for its 10th win in a row. Make that 11. The Devils came back late to win last night, and that's a gift for the Flyers. Buffalo has only won five straight.

The Flyers rolled behind Robert Eshe's clutch net work. With Ruthian swagger, the goalie had declared himself a leader, then actually delivered, keeping the Isles to one score. All four Flyers goals came in the final period - two of them while killing a penalty and into an empty net.

But you don't win Cups the easy way. It's been 30 years. The road starts in Buffalo.

You might want to visit the Sabre fans' message board.

BRING ON THE CRYERS, wrote one Buffaloed fan once the match-ups were set.

Time to dish out some Flyer punishment, wrote another.

Time to add some orange and black flavor to their board.

LATE MORNING UPDATE: Their site says some nice things about the Flyers Fan Board. They invited some Sabres fans to pay a visit. The good will lasts a shift:

I was browsing over there, and there seemed to be a lot of anger directed at the Sabres fans who were posting there...

alot of it came when 1 sabres fan started trash talking, i'm on the boards over there and its pretty sweet. i love talking hockey with other teams fans....

Yeah, and now they're making fun of Buffalo and talking about the price of real estate in Buffalo. Pretty funny, considering most of those people probably live in South Jersey (is there a "vomit" emoticon?) ...

The last time I actually saw a Flyer’s game live was January ’04. It was three days after the Birds lost their third straight NFC Title Game. That night, the orange and black got outclassed by Montreal 4-1.

I have to admit it wasn't all bad. The Flyers apparently employ ice-chicks to tend to the surface between periods. Working hard out there in the cold with tight fitting orange half-shirts, and skin-tight black stretch pants.

They wore white skates and pranced around shoveling ice. I guess it was a shovel, they could have been wielding axes for all I care, and they were about as important to the ice surface as the PA announcer.

We are not talking Tanya Harding and Nancy Kerrigan for skating ability here, but Tanya and Nancy never looked this good.

The point is it was the highlight of an otherwise bad night.

I saw the Flyers beat the Devils on 11/30. I noticed the same ice girls, but they were multiple years, if not a decade or more, younger than me, so I ignored them for the most part :-P My younger brother was with me and he was drueling every time they went out.

I hoped the Flyers played the Devils first and won in 5 or more games... they'd be exhausted but having them as the first team you play would make the rest of the playoffs a little easier, since they just look incredible right now. If the Rangers beat them, look out, but they stink right now so that's unlikely. Buffalo will be a good challenge but we could bring it home in six.

I just hope that the Flyers were actually slacking off waiting for the playoffs at the end of the season, before they realized that they had a chance to win the division. It was the concensus going around. At their best, they look like the best team in the league, by far.

There's a Flyers fan trolling that board. That's cool, but I like to just go to other teams' message boards after we win the series and post my picture of William Penn and Ben Franklin giving the double bird flip with Flyers jerseys on :D

(Now I have to actually have that materialize that because it's brilliant)

Cryers??? Hmmmm...lets take it back, I seem to remember Matthew Barnaby crying his little eyes out a few years ago when the Flyers beat the Sabres in the playoffs. If you are going to make up a clever nickname, don't be dumb about it. Flyers over the Fluffalo Sabres in seven.
