Ein Kaesesteak Mit

Lots of talk around town about the article topping Tuesday's Inquirer - the one where Joseph Ventro, the second-generation American who owns Geno's, crows about not letting anyone who doesn't speak English order a cheesesteak.

"Steak Nazi" is the headline that Occam's Razor chooses. But he's with Ventro:

He's even gone so far as to drive around the neighborhood using the PA system on his car denouncing the local business who hire illegal immigrants. I gotta say, I'm impressed, the area Geno's is in, while known as "little italy" is home to thousands of hispanics and Joey here is running the risk of ticking off a lot of customers. However, he's making a stand on what he thinks is right, and I for one support him. Think I will show my support by running down there real soon to grab a "cheesteak with".

Michele Malkin's on-board, too.

But now this ...

From a Q & A forum with Inquirer food critic Craig LaBan:

Q How to order a cheesesteak in Flemish: Goeiedag, een kaassteak alsjeblief. - Huh?- Met ajuin gestoofd in Leffe. - Huh? Which cheese? - Chimay natuurlijk, wat anders! En friet met mayonnaise alsjeblief. Staat er chokolade op het dessertmenu? Translation: Hi, a cheesesteak please. With onions fried in Leffe. Chimay of course, what else? And fries with mayonnaise, please. Is there chocolate o the dessert menu?

Nice how Malkin intends to drive up and order a "cheesesteak with."

That would, I'm sure, ingratiate her with the folks around here who tend to hate pronouncing that time-consuming "th" sound at the end.

Yo Dan,

I got Gene Roberts on the phone for his take on Joe Vento. The results were not surprising.

"Yuh kin turn a good Messican intuh a good Philadelphian," he told me. "But Ah’m not sure yuh kin turn a good Philadelphian intuh a good Messican."

As the sage wrote, his successors ignore that drawled wisdom at their peril.

Joe shouldn't be worried, I hear all the non-English speakers like their steak chopped up, so they go to Pat's.

(the sign I'm OK with, the driving around the 'hood with a loudspeaker? scary)

Your headline reads in "Darsi'? Is there a language with that name. Or did you mean Farsi?

This ain't exactly the way to attract tourists to Philly, is it? With the dollar in the basement these days, we're getting a lot of vacationers from overseas, who spend their money here. If they speak Croatian, Japanese, Chinese, German, French, Italian, Greek, Spanish or whatever, we should make it as easy as possible for them to spend their money here (and have a great time doing it, so they'll come back and spend more money here the next time). Having somebody hollering at them for not speaking English is not the way to do that.

Ventro likes his jingoism wit. Will it be news when the rest of his beliefs are exposed? Hey, Ventro, David Duke speaks your kind of English.

Reminds of the day I was walking through the neighborhood to hear some teens harrassing two Asian women who were overheard conversing in their native tongue.

In addition to some of the cruder comments, one kid hollered, "If you're going to come to this country, learn to speak English!"

And one of the women replied very loudly in perfect English, "F*ck you!"

Amazing how fast a person can pick up a language, isn't it?

I have no problem requiring immigrants to learn English. Heck, I think we should ALL learn English. Judging by what you see on the internet, very few people actually can converse in it.

On the other hand, language is hardly a badge of honor to hold over someone's head. The bottom line is that we require immigrants to speak English because Americans spend very little time learning any other language. We're not required to do so, so we don't bother. We're essentially telling people to learn English in America because otherwise, we won't know what the hell you're talking about.

Yet another reason to head for Jim's on South, as if a better cheeseskeak wasn't reason enough.

Who the hell goes up and says "Dame un bistec con queso!"??

No. If anything the person ordering would say (in broken English)… "Gimme a cheese-a-steak!"

If the guy was Italian and spoke broken English, this idiot would have no problem.

This whole take on illegal immigration from some of these idiots only legitimizes racism, bigotry and hate against certain ethnic groups.

I was watching something on Neo-Nazis and their take on immigrants sounds no different from the take of some of these idiots voicing their distaste for immigrants.

They could care less about the legal status. They’re just happy they have a "green light" to call people all kinds of racial-insensitive remarks, labels and stereotypes.

Has that moron looked in the mirror? He's a 3rd or 4th generation immigrant as well. His ancestors probably came over without knowing the language. 'They came over legally in 1921??' All they needed to do was get on a boat, look healthy and sign a book. The rules have changed for immigration, thousands of times since the 1920's. His family most likely acquired English through their children like most immigrants do. He is probably too simple to
have retained his ancestry's mother tongue. Who's at a loss now? The idea that
there is support for this neanderthal goes to show you that there are closed minded egoists everywhere. He is the 'Ugly American' typified, I'm sure he's proud about that without fully knowing what it means.

Tourism is a major industry in Philadelphia. People that speak whatever language should be able to order food in a foreign country by any means, even if it is with body language. What happens with deaf people? Should they LEARN TO SPEAK ENGLISH? How should they place their orders?

I agree that everyone who lives in the U.S. needs to learn English and communicate
effectively, if that means with hand signs, by writing or speaking, so be it. English should be one of the many languages people speak. However, to insist and turn away those who cannot pronounce an item is ridiculous.

We certainly have our share of idiots in this city. "They want us to adapt to these people. What do you mean, 'Press 1 for Spanish'? English, period. Case closed. End of discussion. You better make it the official language."

This guy is mad as hell but he's not sure what about. He doesn't even talk about immigration. He's just too lazy to learn Spanish and pissed off that someone suggested he should. He says "I got a business to run" but apparently is not very interested in doing so effectively.
