Ann Northrup with her Center City work, "Taste of Summer"; the Polenta Man, depicting Marc Vetri, is over her shoulder. Would a real estate developer fit into the picture? (Sharon Gekoski-Kimmel / Staff Photographer)
This one's got all your food groups: a celebrity chef, an angry landlord, a frustrated artist -- and a missed quote.
The quote, which I edited out of today's column in a moment of brain freeze, was when Marc Vetri's landlord looked over his yellow-accented designer glasses and griped about the chef's reliance on his lawyer/mother: "He's always hiding behind his mommy's apron."
Today's metro column is a tempest in a polenta pot.
Like I previously said, I don't get what all of the hoopla is about. I know quite a few individuals who have posed for pictures that eventually become murals, so I really don't see how this as any different. The image of the Polenta Man may be based off of Vetri, but the Polenta Man is there as a representation of all the previous chefs. It's an homage using a living person's likeness and there is nothing wrong with that. I think it's quite lovely and adds a nice touch to that wall, plus it was the artist's idea and she just happened to use the current tenant as her model for the Polenta Man. I don't consider this free advertising because had I not read the previous article, I would have never known who the man with the kettle was. I actually like it. It's very unimposing. I don't see what the problem is. I mean, it's not like the main mural is a gigantic head of Marc Vetri with an electric signs that say "Eat Vetri's Food!" It's a little piece of building history now. A little piece of Philly history. I think it's cool. I say let it stay.
