Milking the Bar

I'm on assignment, and so won't be posting anything today, but I managed to milk that Brokeback Snickers ad one more time, and was asked to talk about it on NPR's Talk of The Nation yesterday. So I did, and here's the link. My son says I stopped saying all those "Ums" after a few minutes. I think I wound up sounding as if I'm to the left of the lesbian comic from San Francisco.

Something to read while listening? (or while not listening) Former Penn State and NBA player John Ameachi becomes the first pro basketball player to declare himself gay. Grant Hill applauds the decision. LeBron James comes off a little less open-minded. Some Sixers quoted, including the injured Shavlik Randolph, a Duke grad, who said he's fine with homosexuality on the courts, "as long as you don't bring your gayness on me."

Interesting NPR exchange. I was glad Marilyn Pittman traded 'gay' and 'straight' for 'black' and 'white' in reaction to the one caller's statement about so-called heterophobia. If we all stop and think about our overwhelming tendency to stereotype people (regardless of color or sexual orientation), we might start to realize how foolish it really sounds. Let's start by asking ourselves how we would feel if the hateful declarations--especially some of the statements about the Snickers commercial--were lobbed at you and your family. Do people choose to be heterosexual? Of course not. Same goes for gays. The problem comes in accepting what's different. It's a problem that pervades every part of our world unfortunately.

It's not hateful to believe people are not born gay. Decades of scientific and psychological research have yet to prove conclusively either way. Until such time, many will simply believe that this is nothing more than a behavioral choice.

Yes, sadly some choose to hate, on both sides of the argument. Differences of opinion, unlike people, are not always as easily categorized as "black" and "white". If you want to preach "tolerance", just remember that when it comes time to tolerate a point of view that opposes yours.

Um, nice job, Dan (just kidding!)

Enough with the ad, people, this is the place to critique Dan's appearance on NPR.

I think he was cogent and clear, made valid points, is obviously in touch with the blogging community and was funny enough to make Marilyn and me laugh.

Dan, what I want to know is how did you get them to mention Blinq two hundred times?

WTG, Blinqmeister.

I just can't get over the stupidity and arrogance of these NBA "stars" with the comment "as long as you don't bring your gayness on me"!?!?! I mean it's like does that moron have any intelligence at all. His own f'd up ego thinks that someone would actually put a move on him simply because they're gay. I just love when these "straight" guys think that everyone who is gay is going to go after them like they're something to look at- GET OVER YOURSELF! GET AN EDUCATION OTHER THAN ATTENDING THE PUBLIC SCHOOL SYSTEM WHICH HE PROBABLY BARELY GRADUATED FROM AND GET A LIFE DOING SOMETHING OTHER THAN THROWING A BALL THROUGH A HOOP AND THINKING YOU'RE THE BIGGEST THING SINCE CHRIST!

"That's a Duke man you're talking about."

Even more reason to dislike him.

Lebron's comment makes Shavlik's look like he's the spokesman for GLAAD.
