We write delicately about Stephen A. Smith, not because he is a colleague here at the Inquirer, but because we cannot truthfully say we have ever watched an entire Quite Frankly... episode on ESPN.
So we won't see Dusty Baker, the Cub's manager, on the show today. But neither will you.
Baker backed out of last week's taping, and the Deadspin blog said that was because someone from Smith's show sent an email that encourange an audience to come and boo the embattled manager if they wanted.
Smith cried foul. In an interview with the Chicago Tribune, Smith accused Deadspin of doctoring the memo.
But a bunch of Cubbies bloggers said differently. They'd gotten the email, too.
Then Smith dug into the matter and found that, quite frankly, an overzealous assistant producer did call for Bronx cheers.
View From The Bleachers, a Cubbies blog, linked a follow-up from Friday's Chicago Tribune, which reported:
"He lied to everybody," Smith said. "Then he tried to cover it up." The aide had e-mailed an invitation to several Cubs blogs offering free tickets to the taping of the show and adding: "You guys can definitely feel free to BOO Dusty if you so please." After learning of the memo, Baker pulled out. Smith said the assistant producer admitted Friday he had lied. "I apologize for any unethical behavior from a member of my staff," Smith said. "He will be dealt with."
What up Stephen A? How do you think the USA basket ball team will do this year?
Stephen A. Smith is, quite frankly, unwatchable.
