Weekend Muse

It's the weekend, so let's try Blinq's 3rd-consecutive-so-now-traditional hunting-and-gathering of free musical links:

The right place, the right time is Phoenixville's Colonial Theatre at 8 p.m. Friday when Dr. John trips the night fantastic. Part Crescent City legend, part haberdashery God, the piano player born Mac Rebennack, can be heard here, (click 'listen') on a 1988 Fresh Air clip, where he plays "Tipitina," the Prof. Longhair tune, in the WHYY studio. For something a little more poimanent, his management is offering an Mp3 of "I Ain't No Johnny Mercer." And, for a little something under the counter, you might want to Walk on Gilded Splinters here. I'll have what he's having.

B.B. King brings Lucille to the House of Blues in Atlantic City Saturday night, but he isn't giving it away for free. Feed Me Good tunes is, however. The guitarist headlined the first concert Blinq ever saw. Tom Rush opened. We would feel old if B.B. weren't still the master.

Saturday night's all right for Robert Pollard, late of Guided By Voices, at the TLA. He's posted three sneak listens on his web site as well as a stream of the entire new album, From A Composite Eye. I've been listening to "Dancing Girls and Dancing Men" via Largehearted Boy. A real toe-tapper.

Lastly, Bettye LaVette at the Arden, (Del.) Guild Hall on Saturday night. She wound up in many Best of SXSW blog posts. One of them, the Vinyl Mine, links to "Down to Zero," the Joan Armatrading song, which gets a grittier treatment from the West Orange, N.J. soul singer.

Then there's Thrilladelphia. Sixty local bands spread out over one week. Gobs of music to download on Some Velvet Blog, where WXPN-FM's Bruce Warren plays indulges his inner muse. The fest starts Friday. There are secret shows, surprise guests. You've got to email them to get invites. (Badminton Stamps gives the best clues.) XPN's All About the Music picks four to download: songs by The Capitol Years, The Future Tips, Bitter Bitter Weeks and The Situation. XPN's a co-sponsor for the event, in its third year.

Finally, Sunday night, the First Unitarian Church in Center City welcomes those cool Canadians known as Islands. Take a brief vacation at their MySpace place, where their cool friends include Beck, or their other site, IslandsAreForever and click that snaky S. Nothing happens. It's sort of Zen. After all that, go to Mars Needs Guitars and grab some actual music, a "Rough Gem." A jewel, actually.

I heard that song on the radio one day this week, and it kept me in my car. Some powerful juju.
