Michael Vick's monster contract brings up one question -- what's Andy Reid doing?

How confident are you in the Eagles' offensive line?
Very confident. Those rookies can play
Pretty confident. Herremans and Peters will be solid anchors.
Not confident. Too many unknown factors.

FACT No. 1: the Eagles’ offensive line is a mess.

FACT No. 2: the Eagles sign Michael Vick for $100 million over six years.

REACTION: Don’t you have to wonder if Andy Reid is making the same mistake Buddy Ryan made with Randall Cunningham -- simply hand him the ball and expect the quarterback to pull the rabbit out of the hat every other down.

Buddy, a defensive genius, thought you could put milk cartons out there for an OL and Randall would get it done.  Surely Andy Reid, a former lineman himself, knows better than that.

Doesn't he?

Uncle, did you know that Payton Manning average 16 interceptions a year, 198 over 12 years, as compared to Vick's 7 per year, 58 over 8 years. Where are you gathering your facts, or do Facts matter in your narrative? The Eagles have receivers that basically strength the defense. Celek drops balls so there is no precision game with the Eagles. What exactly have you been watching when the Eagles are playing? Defenses play the Eagles by leaving their Safeties deep to protect against the deep ball, Jackson and Macklin aren't threats to cross the middle of the defense.

I think you're making up your arguments on Mike Vick. Can you list in what year Vick has thrown for more interceptions than Payton Manning averages?

I agree with you on his luck last year, he was lucky playing behind that Phila Line he was not killed on the Job.

It reminds me of when the Sixers signed Mutombo fully well knowing that he couldn't put them over the top but they had to do it anyway. Especially since Brown wasn't gonna be there to see the future.

Vick got so lucky last year. At one point he had 20 TD's thrown and 1 INT...ONLY because the other teams literally dropped 10 picks. It was just luck. Normally , at least 8 of those are INT's. Add it up to a year more for DC to game plan and Vick is a lock to throw close to 20 picks and lose 5 or 6 fumbles this year. Good luck with that. The whole Vick thing smells of desperation on Reid, Lurie and Banner. They are seeing something not there. For all the posters touting him as a top 5 QB, the consensus among player personnel people is that he is a shaky 7-10 and only because of his explosiveness do they put him up there at all. Almost any QB in the league could throw 25 TD's with these offensive weapons and a coach who dials up passes every play(see Kyle Orton last year in Denver) Michael "The Mirage" Vick.

The league has figured out Vick and he's too stupid to read defenses and blitzes.

Actually, no. I've never considered sports writers to be journalists. (You used the term, remember?) David Broder was a journalist. We are mere chroniclers of the passing scene. And the Eagles putting a 100 million dollar man behind a ragged line is a definite 'must' for any chronicler. dm

The Eagles will end up in the playoffs again this year and lose in the first round. Management needs to do more than just throw $100M at Michael Vick. We'll have two more seasons of an injury-prone quarterback getting pounded into the turf because of no protection - luckily only $40M is guaranteed. Vince Young will be 30 by 2013... think he'll be "rehabbed" by then?

I feel that the Eagles are set up for a real vie for Super Bowl but not this year. With the moving parts that have been added and with the Vick contract set, look for a great team with a solid O-line and a cohesive linebacking corps/secondary next year and the year after. Football is about all the parts working together with strong team leadership. That is in the developing stage this year.

The 4% that are confident in the line also believe "Clock management, we need to get better there, we will."

Can't they just buy you out already? You, Gelb and McLane, the lot of you, contribute next-to-nothing to your rag/site.

Thanks! I'm honored to mentioned in the same sentence with some of our top young beat men. I'd love a buyout, but i'm having 'way too much fun doing this. dm

You're joking right? How do they prioritize the team's QB over a wide receiver?

100 million to the dog killer and they'll still have an empty trophy case.

The Eagles had to take the shot.Vick has shown the kind of up side potential that dictates that kind of money.Who else are you going to get ?? Would it be better to keep and pay Kolb less ??He's helped to attract the talent we just signed. We all have our fingers crossed.
Success can be as much of a challenge as failure.Either way he's been there and done that.

O-line schmo line. He could have an all world o-line and Vick ain't succeeding in the playoffs. He is a highlight film not a leader, a film clip not a discplined student, and a man who failed us big time at home against Green Bay last year in the playoffs. He did not get us past the first playoff game. He is a convicted felon. He is a guy who we want in the pocket but is a horrendous pocket passer. He still cannot read defenses, he is vulnerable to the blitz and he usually does not see it coming, and he is old and often injured. And if he fails, we will have excuses like it is the o-line's fault or the wrs fault or the lack of a running game. It will never be Vick's fault. Vick is an utter media hype who never will be able to guide a team well into the playoffs. 40 million big ones are guaranteed and it is enough to make me sick. Biggest mistake in frachise hisotry which is saying something.

Vick didn't fail 'us' in the playoffs, the 'team' lost a close game. See Dexter post above. Also Vick got a falcons team coached by Jim mora to the nfc championship game, so I think he can guide a team 'well' into the playoffs.

Oh Please, Against Green Bay one of the most reliable kickers in Football missed two field goals and the Eagles loss by 5 points. Are we holding Vick now responsible for missed field goals?

Had Akers made common yardage field goals, the Eagles win that playoff Game.

This is what I don't get: The Eagles pay Vick $100 Mil but don't sign a vet right tackle when they know they're going to be starting a rookie right guard. Another game like thurs. night and Vick will be earning $100 Mil on injured reserve. Tyson Clabo got 5 years, $25 mil. The Eagles should have beat that deal and they still would have had money to get a good vet linebacker to mentor Casey Matthews, instead they signed Nnamdi when they already had Asante and DRC. It didn't make sense. Now, with a week to go before the regular season, they're re-shuffling the line.

I just hope he stays healthy because that line is just an open gate right now. Jamal Jackson should be starting and Kelce should just learn how to be a great center. We have too much at stake to start two rookie linemen and a new left guard. Heck even Herremans is out of his comfort zone.

the key is that 40 million is the guaranteed number..If for whatever reason , Mike Vick does not work out after a couple of seasons, one would hope there's still so much national appeal that he would have the strong trade value...But the key is as his burst receeds some in the coming years, he retains enough quickness to stay mobile behind the line of scrimmage...Let's hope the o line gels and matures together to keep him in one piece.

Freed up 1.6 million in cap space with this move. Don't know where that leaves us in total cap space to extend DJ. if we can trade Hanson, that'll free up another 2 mill or so. Who has a large salary that is in danger of getting cut? Laws? JP?

Vick is a pretender not able to beat well coached teams in consecutive weeks which menas failure in the playoffs. Against Green Bay last year he was awful. He is older now, prone to injury, he is not a leader, and he is not a student of the game. He is not a general who can lead you into the war of the NFL playoffs. Forh im to be given a huge contract show just how dysfunctional the Eagles are and this will not be remedied until Reid is fired. The only problem is that no high quality new coach would want Vick to be his qb for 5 years.

What is he pretending at? He was rated as a top five qb last year. His teammates and peers respect him. What inside info do you have regarding his leadership capabilities?
