I-95 North in Delaware shut down after pennies spilled in crash

A tractor-trailer crashed on Interstate 95 in Delaware overnight, shutting down northbound lanes and spilling a massive amount of blank pennies onto the roadway.

The crash happened shortly before 2 a.m. Thursday near the Interstate 295 split in New Castle, Delaware State Police said.

The tractor-trailer overturned and its male driver suffered minor injuries.

All northbound lanes were shut down in the area until 11:30 a.m. when state police said one left lane had been opened to traffic.

The crash dumped the blank pennies onto the highway and led to an extended clean-up for both the coins and spilled fuel.

Pennies are 97.5 percent zinc and 2.5 percent copper, according to the U.S. Mint.
