Amtrak service is suspended on part of the Northeast Corridor due to a brush fire.

Trains were halted between Newark and New York City's Penn Station because of the fire near the tracks at about 1 p.m. Tuesday.

Trains are holding at both of those stations until it is safe to proceed. An Amtrak spokesman said it wasn't immediately known when service would resume.

N.J. Transit service through that area also affected.

The National Weather Service has issued a "red flag" warning for the region through the evening due to the increased fire risk.
