Eagles-Giants II: The Morning After

POSTED: Monday, December 14, 2009, 10:13 AM

TALKING POINTS

What we're talking about following the Eagles' victory over the Giants last night:

1. Wildcat specialist Michael Vick played quarterback in his first touch of the night: He rolled right and threw back across his body, a bit, 32 yards to DeSean Jackson to set up the Eagles’ first touchdown. Vick also ran in from the 1 in the second half, his third touchdown of the season.

2. Defensive end Trent Cole, again, was Mr. Big Play: He forced Brandon Jacobs’s fumble that Sheldon Brown returned 60 yards to make it 14-0 just 5 minutes, 20 seconds into the game.

3. Punt returner DeSean Jackson somehow … somehow … jogged right, reversed field, outran everyone, then hesitated as he approached punter Jeff Feagles, blew past Feagles, stayed inbounds and finished off a 72-yard punt return, a team-record third. Jackson also caught a 60-yard touchdown pass and finished with 261 total yards. He missed the last game with a concussion, but last night he did not look concussed.

4. What?!? The officials blew a call on the Eagles’ 2-minute drive when the ball was knocked from Donovan McNabb’s hand, no one acted as if it was fumbled (it was, really), one official charged in from the sideline waving his arms and blowing his whistle, calling it an incomplete pass … though the ball was spotted where the non-fumble/fumble landed. It eventually was ruled a fumble and dead. Essentially, the officials screwed up and cost the Eagles 10 yards. The Birds rebounded with a 44-yard bomb to Jackson. It was one of several horrendous calls by a sketchy prime-time crew.

5. The defense, supposedly bolstered b y the return of injured linebacker Akeem Jordan and suspended cornerback Joselio Hanson, gave up 38 points, their worst performance since incendiary New Orleans torched them in a Week Two loss.

6. The teams scrummed it up after the Eagles' fumble recovery with 8 seconds to play, precipitated, apparently, by Giants center Shaun O'Hara and replied to by Trent Cole, who got thrown out of the game for throwing punches.

NUMBERS TO PONDER

* For the eighth time in 13 games, the Eagles scored on their first possession. They’ve scored 44 points this year on their first possession.

* The Eagles scored a single-season high 85 points against the Giants this season, their highest ever vs. the Giants since they scored 80 in 1948.

* Sheldon Brown’s 60-yard fumble return for a touchdown in the first quarter was the fifth of his career, tying him with Eric Allen and Seth Joyner for most fumbles returns for TDs by an Eagle.

* Jackson notched his fourth 100-yard receiving game of the season with his 178-yard performance. As a team, the Eagles now have eight 100-yard receiving performances.

* The Eagles have outscored their opponents in the first half this season, 233-132. They’ve been outscored in the second half, 139-141.

* Jackson’s 60-yard touchdown catch from McNabb in the third quarter was the Eagles’ fourth one-play touchdown drive of the season. They’ve also had 5 two-play TD drives.

* Donovan McNabb's passer rating was 110.3 passer rating. The Eagles are 45-1 when McNabb’s rating exceeds 100 (5-0 in 2009).

Yeah Celek got mugged on that play - not sure how many others the G men got away with - but happy for the win - knew Philly owns December and last night proved it - now if they take care or San Fran and Denver - could be the Cowboys game becomes a non-issue - division already won - they will lose to the saints this week

Dierte, don't forget about Manning's knee being down in the end zone before completing a pass on the Giant's last drive.

Celek was mugged, that was terrible. Especially if they are going to call ticky tac illegal contact calls on Mikell for like 6 consecutive plays they might want to throw a flag when Celek gets bear hugged before the pass is even thrown. Also how is time on the clock at half not reviewable. those refs were garbage

Don't forget the lost 2 or 3 seconds at the end of the half, we should have had a field goal try, just sayin'...

The officials were terrible the entire game and what is up with the homer Monday night announcers? Can some one answer the question of why, when there is enough contact down field to draw a pass interference flag, but then the ball was deemed uncatchable, that there is no penality rather than an illegal contact penality? It does not make sense that just because the ball is overthrown that the illegal contact goes out the window. Anyway the Eagles had to beat the Giants as well as the ref.

    And the no-call when DeSean got head-butted after the play . . . should've been a personal foul . . . officiating was horrible

Not to be "that guy" but Vick did not throw across his body. He ran right then turned, reseting his body before throwing.

I was getting worried at the end of the first half, points the refs gipped us out of were really starting to pile up.

There seems to be a pattern how our offense don't get any call even when our QB is almost assulted while our defense gets the call everytime for even legal hits. The calls against Demps in Atlanta game were a great mainfest of the offical call pattern. Reid and Lurie needs to address this with NFL in very strong terms...

Great win for the Birds. Andy is 15-5 in December against NFC east since 2000, pretty damn impressive. Throw in being 5-1 against the division this year and it's hard to complain. Being an Eagles fan entiles us to yap, so here are my two cents. The officiating was horrid, glad we got the "W" in thier barn. Big picture wise we gotta get that defense tighter. We can expect to win too many games where we give up 5 TDs. Bring on the Niners...

There were also a bunch of holding calls not made against the NY o-line. One of the worst officiated games I've seen at this level in a long time.

PS: The refs really sucked again. Was I the only one who saw McNabb's arm come 4 inches forward on that supposed fumble? That was an incomplete pass. And those 2 seconds - that was 3 points off the board. Those 3 points could have been mighty deflating to the Giants who knew they were getting the ball back.

pass interference on brent celek in the endzone, not called. false start on cowboys prior to TD, not called. giants TD was not necessarily even TD - within 2 minutes but booth did not review. fumble on kickoff return recovered with 3 seconds left in the half. spotting the ball as if a fumble even though line judge ruled incomplete pass. eli tackled for a safety, not called. WORST OFFICIATING EVER! sure, the eagles still won, but why is this not a bigger controversy? why didn't al michaels or chris collinsworth talk about it more? i think the mafia got to those refs.
