These chats are always scheduled during times when teachers can't participate, taking the educator out of education once again.

Since I'll be teaching, rather than surfing the Inquirer Online, I'd like to ask Dafney why reporters don't investigate any of the claims made by teachers - for instance, that the statistics used to designate some schools as 1/2 or 1/3 empty are bogus, or that Philly teachers get medical benefits once they've retired. And how about this big one: 4/5 charter schools perform more poorly than their corresponding public schools. Why aren't you guys digging?

Sorry, that should read "Philly teacher's DON'T get medical benefits after they retire (forcing many teachers to stay past the time they should have retired)."

devoted teacher . please explain my grandsons experience at frankford high . i didn't expect him to get text books to take home but no photocopies of pages of texts that they covered that day and no printed worksheets to take home and no homework in two years from EVERY teacher. i talked to every teacher and they all admitted what i just stated. but they had no answer to "how do you study for a test with absolutely nothing to study from" at his charter he still ahs no books to take home but EVERY day he ALL his teachers give him photocopies of the pages of the textbook that he covered that day and printed worksheets for homework. please have the balls to repspond

Ian.....it's because we are limited to the amount of paper we can use....

@ian-----you are so right, and that is a big part of the problem, students can't take texts home.....people in the bubs are shocked by this.....paper is rationed by the principal as part of the school's way of saving money in the budget, and lastly......a lot of us have really slow (maybe 3 page per minute) copiers....please do the math and you will see why your grandson received no work from his teachers

in high school, if the average class size is say 25, imagine how much time you would spend making copies of the pages of text covered in class, i'll say about 5, plus relevant homework, (say 3 pages) times say 75 students......that is 75x8 += 600 pages of copying per day per teacher, (1 ream of paper is 500 sheets).....3.3 hours a day, 5days x 3.3 = 16.5 hours per week making copies.......that is a lot of time

if the principal rations paper at 1 box per semester, and 1 box = 10 reams, your paper will last for 8.3 days, after that a teacher either pays for copies or just can't afford to make copies.

as far as charter schools go, good that your grandson gets the material he needs, but remember, teachers get paid 30% less, 63 administrators SURPASS six figure salaries, plus being under the umbrella of the school district......obviously by paying teachers less they can afford to make copies

one last comment.......the people in 440 use the psd print shop......you should see how many copies are made for professional developments...the math is staggering

Teachers who assign homework and then fail students who do not complete it are told they can not have homework as such a high percentage of their grading scale. So they drop it. I know teachers who submit their course syllabus to administration, are called in and ordered to change their guidelines so that homework becomes a non-entity.
