Utley has returned

Sunday, May 22, 2011, 11:50 AM
Chase Utley is here. Saw him with my own eyes. In the clubhouse. With his equipment and stuff. He isn't in the Sunday lineup against the Texas Rangers. He isn't talking yet to the media. According to the club, the intention is for him to meet with Michael Ciccotti, the team doctor, and athletic... Read more

The Mike Richards question

Friday, May 20, 2011, 9:33 AM
Q: Which Flyers player, in Game 1 against Boston -- the 7-3 loss when so many of his teammates didn’t show up, the game that sent the whole thing careening out of control -- scored a goal, was on the ice for only one of the seven Boston goals, was out there for only about three or four scoring... BOSTON -- And so it ends for the Flyers, quickly and profoundly. Four games, four losses, and now more than 4 months to try to figure out what went wrong. Versus will show "God Bless America"

Monday, May 2, 2011, 11:21 AM
UPDATING AGAIN: After looking back at the old stories, I have discovered a flaw in my memory of "God Bless America" history. As it turns out, Lauren Hart sang the song for the first time, solo, before the last game of the 2000 playoffs -- the seventh game loss to the Devils during which Eric Lindros... Read more

The passion of Philadelphia fans

Sunday, May 1, 2011, 11:00 AM
I think we all just witnessed the biggest day in the history of Philadelphia sports. By "biggest," I don't mean most momentous. Instead, the definition is far more utilitarian -- butts in chairs. And here is the number: 132,049. Has Philadelphia ever had a bigger day? Call the roll: 48,531 (Penn... Read more
About this blog
Rich Hofmann arrived at the Daily News in 1980 for a job whose status was officially designated as "full-time, temporary." A senior at Penn at the time, he was hired to fill in on the copy desk during a staff illness. The notion of him covering the Eagles or being a columnist did not exist in anyone's imagination. It was supposed to be six weeks and out, but he never left. It is only one of the reasons why so many people have concerns about him as a potential house guest. Rich has blogged the postseasons of the Flyers and Eagles. E-mail Rich at Reach Rich at
