Where amazing happens, Eagles division

Monday, May 18, 2009, 9:08 AM
Back in the day, one imagines that the success of a television commercial was dependent upon whether or not people were whistling the jingle on the street, or repeating the catch-phrase in conversation, or some other such human-based measure. No longer. Now, you know your commercial was a success if... Read more

Eagles swimming in cap space

Sunday, May 17, 2009, 11:24 AM
From Mike Florio at comes this latest accounting of cap space around the National Football League. In a shocking development, the Eagles have a ton: $23.1 million, fifth most in the NFL. Months ago, club president Joe Banner said the Eagles couldn't possibly spend it all, and... Read more

Eagles shortchanged by over/under

Wednesday, May 13, 2009, 10:47 AM
My apologies if this list has already been chewed over, but if it was, I missed it. It is annual springtime fodder, the NFL over/under list for wins in the upcoming season. I can't believe the Eagles' over/under is only 9 wins. Just look at these three numbers: Giants, 10.5 win. Cowboys, 9.5 wins... Read more

Don't worry about Rollins yet

Tuesday, May 12, 2009, 10:26 AM
Sixty years ago, they made a baseball movie called “It Happens Every Spring.” The plot is a fantasy, about a chemist who accidentally discovers a formula that repels wood and then becomes a pitcher who puts his potion to work for fun and profit. And, no, they didn’t test for the potion... Read more

Ryan Howard says he does get it. He lives and works in a world where Manny Ramirez gets suspended for 50 games for using a performance enhancing drug, and Alex Rodriguez gets a book written about him, and everyone is under suspcion. Manny and the absence of shock

Thursday, May 7, 2009, 1:57 PM
New item: Manny Ramirez tests positive for a banned substance and receives a 50-game suspension from Major League Baseball. Reaction: a curious shrug. It is hard to get worked up about this stuff anymore. You get numb to it. Ramirez' disappearance from the lineup will affect the Dodgers, clearly... Read more

I am not A-Rod's coach

Wednesday, May 6, 2009, 9:06 AM
I have not read the book. I have no feelings on the subject. I am not A-Rod's high school coach. Three people have approached me on Facebook since Selena Roberts' book on Alex Rodriguez has been published. Two of them were just people, I think, but one of them was an honest-to-goodness journalist... Read more

Flyers vs. Sixers popularity contest

Tuesday, May 5, 2009, 11:57 AM
I meant to get to this last week, not because I’m hockey’s greatest defender or anything, but just because. And this admittedly is a little bit of an odd time to be wondering who is more popular in town, the Sixers or the Flyers, given their recent spectacular demises. But, well, here goes... Read more

Peter King loooooves the Eagles' draft

Monday, May 4, 2009, 8:28 AM
Everybody loved the Eagles' draft. Sports Illustrated's Peter King loved the Eagles' draft. But King has posted an analysis online that walks you through the Eagles' second day draft maneuvering, all of the dizzying trades, and comes to this conclusion: What would you think if I told you the Philadelphia... Paterno sounds off

Friday, May 1, 2009, 11:57 AM
Joe Paterno wants some changes. Here's the link to the story that lays it all out. He wants an expansion of the Big 10 to a 12th team -- Pitt, Syracuse, Rutgers, he doesn't seem to care. He wants a post-season playoff because the Big 10 "go(es) into hiding for six weeks" after the... Read more
About this blog
Rich Hofmann arrived at the Daily News in 1980 for a job whose status was officially designated as "full-time, temporary." A senior at Penn at the time, he was hired to fill in on the copy desk during a staff illness. The notion of him covering the Eagles or being a columnist did not exist in anyone's imagination. It was supposed to be six weeks and out, but he never left. It is only one of the reasons why so many people have concerns about him as a potential house guest. Rich has blogged the postseasons of the Flyers and Eagles. E-mail Rich at Reach Rich at
