Wright: 'Nova never feared failure

POSTED: Sunday, April 5, 2009, 12:51 AM

After the game, Villanova's 83-69 loss to North Carolina, Wildcats coach Jay Wright re-stated a theme that he has often spoken. That is,  that his team never feared losing.

"I always tell our guys, 'There's nothing wrong with failing,'" Wright said. "You can't fear failure. And when it happens, you've got to learn from it. So I really want us to learn from this tonight.

"You know, we didn't play our best game.  The No. 1 reason is Carolina played better tonight. You've got to give them credit. But there are things we could have done and should have done that we have to learn from. And then tomorrow, I'm going to make sure that this senior class is celebrated. I'm going to work hard at that."

The worst thing the Wildcats did was shoot; duh. The best thing they did was fight. They will see this later if they give themselves a chance.

"I mean, our greatest strength is us always being on the attack and being aggressive," junior guard Scottie Reynolds said. "Coach just kept saying to be on the attack. If the shot's there, take it.  You know, we weren't going to try to do anything different that we haven't been doing all year."

And what is it that Wright always says? Shoot it up, sleep in the streets. It is a non-sequitur that basically means, shoot the ball and live with the consequences.

Tonight, the Wildcats sleep in the streets. Tomorrow, maybe, they get a chance to realize what they have accomplished.

3 Point shooting was off, if they hit a few of them it is a different ball game. I did not think they were any better than Villanova. They were a bit bigger but the talent level was equal. Cunningham is much better than Hans, I don't see where this guy is so talented, he does not have a shot like Cunningham, he is just big and strong and pushes off better than others and gets away with it.

Villanova played its guts out. The talent level with Carolina was just slightly higher. I love my alma mater and nearly 300 of us in a Chicago alumni get-together spilled out our souls for the 'Cats. What will be best remembered was not that we shot 5-for-27 from outside or that we shot 32.7% from the field, but the body of work over the season. The elecric atmosphere in South Philly when we knocked off U.C.L.A. and then in Boston, where our masses created a home crowd advantage in wins over Duke and Pitt. This was a year to remember for Villanova, one of overachievement and the stepping stone for better times yet to come. With the terrific recruiting classes coming closer together, with 'Nova fans making their presence known all across the country, as my French Canadian ancestors were fond of saying, "Laissez les bontomps rouler..." Let the good times roll.

So incredibly proud of all this Wildcat team has accomplished...and how they have represented Villanova with pride and dignity. This Wildcat team can hold their heads high as they take their place among the greatest Villanova teams of all time. Congrats, 'Cats - we love you!
