It's a win, but not much more

WASHINGTON -- The Eagles beat the Redskins by 27-17.
So why don't you feel better?
The Eagles got out to a big lead against the poor, pitiful Redskins and then just kind of staved off disaster for the rest of the night, winning easily.
So why don't you feel better?
The Giants are coming, the Giants are coming, and the Eagles' offense just doesn't look very sharp. For the second week in a row, quarterback Donovan McNabb was underwhelming. And now, on top of everything, running back Brian Westbrook suffered what appeared to be a pretty serious concussion in the first quarter of the game, taking an accidental knee in the back of the neck from Redskins linebacker London Fletcher and appearing to get knocked cold.
With that, the Eagles are about to enter the really tough part of their schedule without their premier running back. With that, an off-season of preparing rookie Shady McCoy for just this possibility will now receive a severe test.
The good news in this game was the play of new middle linebacker Will Witherspoon, who scored a touchdown on a 9-yard interception return of a pass batted by blitzing safety Quintin Mikell, and who also had a sack and forced fumble of Washington quarterback Jason Campbell. He joins Buffalos Sam Adams as the only player to have a sack and an interception return for a TD in their first game with a team.
That was the good news.
The rest of it, though, felt kind of ominous.
wonder how much of a hissyfit mcnabb is going to pull this year when he gets benched for poor play jazztafari
Spoon looked great early on--I loved that trade from Day One and I think this is only the beginning for him. But in the second half, Washington seemed to play us the way they usually do--no big flashy plays, just controlling the clock and picking up third downs. We sustained maybe one offensive drive that entire second half and it got us no points. Nice to get a W in the end, but it sure wasn't thrilling. moderndaymesh
You don't get style points in the NFL for a win. You don't go up in the polls or down in the polls if you don't beat your opponenr by 50. They came off a disaster last week and beat a division opponent and they;re technically in 2nd by virtue of their 1-0 division record and Dallas' 0-1 division record. bobbyuk
McNabb was bad. Oline was bad. Play calling was bad. Wildcat was bad. Luckily, the Redskins were worse. davimcg
Somewhere between AR play calling and McNabb's executing plays thewre are big problems.Jackson disappeared in the 2nd half?? Boring, boring.... tulsaphil

First of all, Im sick of the McNabb haters. That said, Washington's defense is one of the best in the entire NFl and our offensive line isn’t good enough yet to allow plays to develop. And yes, that does not bode well for next week and the rest of the season. Bash McNabb all you want, he is not the problem. JohnnyH

sorry, mcnabb hater i am not but week after week of the bad throws leave me wondering. balls were at receivers feet, airmailed over their head. yes, he extends plays. but, my god, is it too much to ask to have an accurate QB? Kolb with a full week to prepare definitely gives us a better chance to win. djack10
its a win and take it like that! beez1228

phillyhoodlum22......simply put, you're clueless. You give Kolb time and he will run the system the way it's meant to be run, the way AJ Feeley ran it, the way Jeff Garcia ran it, that's with timing. McNabb is good on broken plays, but the system Andy Reid has in place, and every system for that matter, has to do with timing. McNabb stutters, others flourish. Kolb would flourish if given time. tfarnath
i'm not a mcnabb hater, and i defended the guy in the past. i thought he gave us the best chance to win. after last season's benching, he turned it on. i'm not so sure i want a guy like that leading my team. no doubt the guy's talented, but it's obvious the guy is complacent. he plays with no sense of urgency. yeah, the eagles won tonight, but the offense looked pathetic with the exception of a few plays. i'm sick of reid's play calling and the lack of creativity - and this wildcat experiment is just bad, bad, bad. if this team doesn't pick it up asap i think we'll find this season to be a huge disappointment. i'm reserving judgement until the end of the season. over the past few seasons reid and co have a way of defying the odds, but this team looked really average tonight. Lose the Wildcat. It is horrible. phillyinsd- Agreed. The wildcat is a waste. The whole team looked flat. Defense still irritates the hell out of me. Ugly stuff. The only thing that got the Eagles a win in this one was the utter ineptitude of the Redskins. I'm still happy we got a W, but...sheesh.
This team might win 1 to 2 more games this season but that could be a stretch. Yes, the Wildcat is a joke and Reid is one of the worst coaches in the NFL. If he was fired tomorrow, name one team that would hire him. Brace yourselves for 5-11 and root for the Phils. rockinginthefreeworld- I'd rather win and it not look good. When you win and look like you're hitting on all cylinders, you're likely to let down like we did vs. Oakland. I think the Eagles will be in the right mental state to take on the Giants Sunday. That in itself might not be enough to win, but I'll take it. ICDogg
McNabb is the Bruntlett of Pigskin. mick314
