The sense all along was that the Eagles were going to have to win a shootout Sunday if they were to beat the San Diego Chargers. The sense was right even if the result was wrong for the Eagles. Final score: Chargers 31, Eagles 23.

It was a wild, wild, wild game. The Eagles' defense, decimated now by injuries, would have its hands more than full all day with the Chargers. LaDanian Tomlinson, thought to be dead, awakened. And the Eagles' secondary, already missing its third and fourth cornerbacks, lost starter Sheldon Brown with an apparent hamstring problem. There was every reason to believe it was going to be a shooting gallery, and it was. The Chargers held a 28-9 lead at the end of the third quarter and it all seemed to be over by the body count.

And then the Eagles resuscitated themselves. Their offense would go for almost 500 yards for the day, as Donovan McNabb led them back. They had moved the ball between the 20's all day, only to be stymied in short-yardage situations and red-zone situations; yes, this is a recording. Still, the Eagles kept coming. A touchdown pass to a wide-open Jeremy Maclin was followed, with 7:12 to go, by a six-yard touchdown pass to tight end Brent Celek. The extra point brought the Eagles back to 28-23 and the thousands of Eagles fans who made the trip to Qualcomm Stadium made themselves very much heard.

But then the Chargers had the ball and ate the clock. The Eagles' defense, truly beleaguered now by injuries, just couldn't get off of the field. The Chargers ended up kicking a field goal with 30 seconds left. After the kickoff, McNabb and the offense had 24 seconds to drive 66 yards for the potential tying score (and two-point conversion).

Didn't happen. The game ended with an interception by Antonio Cromartie in the end zone.

And this sad addendum: Brian Westbrook suffered another concussion in the second half and watched the end of the game wearing a baseball cap. We can only guess when he might play again. Tough, tough trip.

Andy Reid is a horrible play caller. We need someone like Bill Cowher to make this team physically tough because we're softer then perezhilton.

You're joking right??? They got stuffed in the running game, fell behind by 14 and had to throw the ball. The defense, with som many players out of position, wasn't able to make key stops. And I don't know what Samuel was doing when he stopped covering that guy in the end zone.

Seriously, thank God for Big Five basketball and Temple football, so at least we will have something of interest this Winter. This turkey is done. Hopefully, Big Red will get the ejection he so richly deserves and is punted back to Provo. For whatever greatness he has shown in the past, this guy is past it.

54 passes to 13 runs?? Are you kidding me? He continues this horrible trend of play calling and should be fired. He has no faith in the offensive line and, in turn, the offensive line has no faith.

fduknights they played hard they just lost way too many players. The O-Line is filled with stopgap personnel, the linebackers were makeshift and the secondary is down to our practice squad. I was looking at the NFC picture and they still have the best chance to make it outside of the other 3 division leaders. Dallas lost and we play them 1 more time this year and the rest of the NFC is a crapshoot for the last 2 wildcard spots. We have the best chance to win the division, out of all of the wildcard teams, and we have the best chance for a wildcard position. This team just needs to get healthy.

Fire Andy! He truly is the worst coach. The team is so one dimensional, it's pathetic! Westbrook is Tiffany fragile, and it's time put the old dog down! I must be as dumb as Andy because each week, I wait excitedly for my "Mighty Eagles" to take the field. The result seems to be the same every time. I end up questioning why am I wasting my time. Back in 1981 a sixth grader from L.I. NY chose the mighty Eagles to be his team, they had the coolest helmuts. Every year when the season ends with the usual dissapointment, I end up wondering why I wasn't a history buff. Had I been maybe I would have chosen the Patriots, 49'ers or Cowboys as my team! Thank You Eagles for ruining another Sunday night for me. You guys suck!

Lucky for the Eagles, the Packers did what they were unable to do, keep the Cowboys scoreless and force Romo into errors. Maybe with the other teams in the NFL being so mediocre, the Eagles still have a chance to make the playoffs, but don't expect much else.

I feel like this game might define the whole season. Forget the playoffs and anyway they want to spin it. If you can't run the ball on first and goal and get 6 in the NFL you lose. Especially in the NFC East!

Interesting how the season is over when if the playoffs started today the eagles would be in them.

55 passes to 13 runs....9 or 10 penalties... waisted timeouts early in the 2nd half...inability to score td's in the red zone especially 1st and goal from the 1 yard line...offense finally shows life 2 where the eagles just need a stop on d 2 get the ball back and the chargers march 70 some yards and eat up 5 to 6 minutes of the clock and game over..same ole lame press conference from coach "I gotta put my team in better position"..blah..blah ..blah...same story every week..ladies and gents ur philadelphia eagles

About Rich Hofmann
Rich Hofmann arrived at the Daily News in 1980 for a job whose status was officially designated as "full-time, temporary." A senior at Penn at the time, he was hired to fill in on the copy desk during a staff illness. The notion of him covering the Eagles or being a columnist did not exist in anyone's imagination. It was supposed to be six weeks and out, but he never left. It is only one of the reasons why so many people have concerns about him as a potential house guest. Rich has blogged the postseasons of the Flyers and Eagles. E-mail Rich at hofmanr@phillynews.com
