Westbrook repays McNabb

POSTED: Wednesday, April 8, 2009, 12:49 PM

Once upon a time, Eagles quarterback Donovan McNabb said that, no, he couldn't possibly comment on the contract demands of one of his teammates, that it just wouldn't be proper. The teammate was Terrell Owens, and woe descended upon Jeffrey Lurie's billion-dollar baby -- you know, the Philadelphia Eagles -- soon thereafter.

This all happened in the early part of 2005, if memory serves. The situps in the driveway happened in July (or early August; too lazy to look it up). Further aftershocks followed. By October, though, another contract issue had fallen upon the Eagles' family. And in an ESPN interview, filled with remarks he repeated to reporters that evening, McNabb said  that, yes indeed, he could get involved in somebody's contract negotiations if that somebody was not named T.O.-- in fact, if that somebody was running back Brian Westbrook.

McNabb said that day, "I've said he's the ultimate weapon. What I've said, I feel he should be rewarded for the things he does for this offense . . . I feel that he deserves whatever he's asking for. We demand a lot of him."

That they shared an agent, one Fletcher Smith, was understood by all (including T.O, no doubt).

And now, four years later, Westbrook has repaid the favor.

Also appearing on ESPN, Westbrook has just lobbied  for a new deal for McNabb. The transcript of his remarks comes from Birds' Eye View; all hail Brooky.

The money quote (literally and figuratively):

"I think Donovan means so much to this football team," Westbrook said. "He brings a leadership, he brings a lot of value on the field as well. I also think this is a business kind of thing. Do I think he deserves a contract? Absolutely. He has brought so much to the team and this organization as well as the city. Hopefully, he's able to handle his business and the way he wants to get it done."

Rarely is the image so clear, of one hand washing the other.

5isa?, the Eagles did well with Garcia as QB. So when did McNabb show he was not a choker? All you need to do is check the facts. Just give me one example of a comeback for 5.

1 Year! Let him prove himself for 1 more year! Not that it'll matter much. We all know what we get from McDrabb. No running, errant throws and dumb 244 mugging on the sidelines.

The Manager, the year McNabb had a #1 receiver he threw three int's and threw up in the superbowl. Another choke for McNabb.

Winning one NFC championship in 5 tries doesn't make me feel all that lucky to tell you the truth. Watching him throw up in the money games doesn't make me feel all that lucky either. Watching him under/over throw receivers in pressure situations also doesn't make me feel all that lucky.

5isa?, didn't mean to get you so upset. Why is it when you are upset you start with the name calling. You must be 12 years old or some age around there. You need to grow up. Again sorry to upset you so much.

I like the 'Independent Mind' part. Does that mean it isn't connected to ANYTHING? Well as far as the 'Comeback Kings' in the league, how many are there..specifically? Maybe there were coaches who had a better plan for the circumstances, because the QBs don't call the plays..do they. Remember "THE CATCH"? It wasn't called "THE THROW" was it? Right on the money hunh?

5isadink - we already got a dud at QB and I'd rather finish 4-12 and maybe get a shot at a real QB than to sneak into the playoffs only to see this team come up short once again. A come back win against SF??? That's proving him wrong!

It was supposed to be six weeks and out, but he never left. It is only one of the reasons why so many people have concerns about him as a potential house guest.
