The end for Andrews?

Could this be it for the Eagles' Shawn Andrews?

The end for Andrews?

POSTED: Tuesday, September 15, 2009, 10:49 AM

Nothing is certain when it comes to ballplayers and bad backs. Nothing is certain, either, with a football franchise that throws emotional haymakers on the hour, it seems. But you really have to wonder if this is it for Shawn Andrews.

The news that the Eagles have placed Andrews on injured reserve, ending his season, in order to make room on the roster for newly-arrived quarterback Jeff Garcia is nothing short of stunning. This is a team that is carrying seven wide receivers for some unknown reason, yet it gives up on Andrews for the 2009 season. It is just breathtaking.

When you think about the career Andrews should have had, you cannot help but shake your head at the misfortune, at the depression, at the back injury, at the rest of it. It is all tied together, this uniquely free-spirited player and this uniquely awful set of mishaps. But it leaves us here today, wondering.

Are the Eagles done with him? Has there been some new medical revelation? Has the fine play of Winston Justice in the first game of the season accelerated a move that was probably coming anyway? And what of the future?

No one knows. At the same time, none of us would be surprised, not now, if we never see Shawn Andrews in an Eagles jersey again. Football is the cruelest game that way. You have two choices in the NFL: get up or get out of the way, lest the whole gargantuan train run you over. Everybody who plays in the NFL learns very quickly that nobody stops the train -- and certainly not somebody with a bad back.

Again, his downfall has been stunning. And with the Eagles, in this season of tumult, we can only wonder what the news might be tomorrow.

"yet it gives up on Andrews for the 2009 season." The Eagles didn't give up on Shawn Andrews. He gave up on them.

I honestly just feel sorry for the guy. I don't believe it's a lack of desire. He's a lost person right now. I hope he get's right and comes back next season.

I'm not sure but I don't think a player can be cut if they are injured. If a player is injured the NFL player injury guarantee provides that if a player is injured while performing services for his club, and the player promptly reports the injury, then the club must continue to pay the player’s: 1.) salary as long as he remains physically unable to play during that season; and 2.) all necessary treatment, rehabilitation, medical and hospital care relating to the injury. Now I don't know about the second season. I don't know if the Eagles are on the hook for 2010. I can't see them, or any other club, paying him the 2 million owed to him in 2010. Phillywhiteguy I wouldn't throw out you are a moron to anyone especially when you're saying it has nothing to do with money. I would have liked to see what the situation would have been if Andrews was making much more than the $750,000 he is entitled to this year. At $750,000 the Eagles probably figured he was worth the risk. If they would have cut him another club almost assuredly would have signed him at such a low salary..

Gomer got his way. Now he doesn't even have to play to collect that big bucket of money. He can now get his Michael Phelps on all he wants. Time to go, Gomer.

everyones career ends. andrews end came when he didn't show up for the second half against the saints in that playoff game two years ago. he let the team down that day and every day since. i'm surprised he played one game in 2008 even though it was against the rams.

Andrews is lazy, crazy and a waste. CUT HIM. Erin Andrews has more to offer for the Eagles right now.

THE MAN IS HURT, NOW ALL YOU MONDAY MORNING QB'S ARE DOCTORS NOW. WHAT REASON WOULD HE HAVE TO JUST SAY I AM HURT AND REALLY NOT BE. HAS EVERYONE FORGOTTEN THE INJURY IS SERIOUS ENOUGH THAT HE DID HAVE BACK SURGERY LAST YEAR, HELLLLLLLO! WHAT WOULD IT HURT THE EAGLES TO LET HIM HEAL THIS YEAR AND BE 100% NEXT YEAR. A HEALTHY SHAWN ANDREWS IS THE BEST LINEMAN THAT THE EAGLES HAVE. KEEP YA HEAD UP BIG KID, LET THE NAY SAYERS PLAY THE GAME WITH A BAD INJURY AND LETS SEE WHATS SAID ABOUT THEM. THIS MOVE WAS ONLY MADE TO MAKE ROOM FOR GARCIA AND KEEP 7 WIDE OUTS. NICE MOVE FAT RED! SURPRISED YOU DIDNT CALL FREDDY MITCHELL WITH ALL YOUR BRILLIANT MOVES.
