Some details on DeSean's holdout

POSTED: Wednesday, July 27, 2011, 10:22 AM

Wednesday morning, an Eagles source confirmed two previously-reported facts on the potential DeSean Jackson holdout.

1) In most seasons, if a player isn't in training camp by the schedule reporting time -- for the Eagles, that is 5 pm Wednesday at Lehigh -- he is considered a holdout. This year, not so much. Adam Caplan reported Tuesday on 97.5 The Fanatic that, because of the short notice following the lockout, players on teams with Wednesday reporting dates would not be considered holdouts until Thursday. A club sourcenow confirms this. So if Jackson does not show up by 5 pm, it will be symbolic but it won't be official.

2) The club, according to the source, continues to have no idea what Jackson is going to do.

As for the rest of it, here's a link to a column on the site.

I love Maclin but I say pay DJax but make it very incentive based- how about 50,000 for each catch and 200,000 for each game he finishes without an injury.

All I know is Antonio Holmes got $50 Million from the Jets. $24 Million Guaranteed as a signing bonus. DJax was paid something like $800 Thousand last year.

If I were DJ's agent, there is no way I would let him go to camp under these conditions.

So I wonder if the same people who have issues with DeSean not in camp have an issue with Kolb not being in camp. He's still an Eagle and under contract. What say you?

He is rumored to be joining his role model, Kobe, in Turkey

Sure it doesn't have anything to do with his size and being built like a 16 year old cheerleader? I will say, though, that he and other younger receivers need to figure out zone coverage and where the big hits will come from. Too many times receivers run crossing routes right into the big hit. I chalk that up to experience over confidence only because the guy returns punts, which is the most dangerous thing to do in the NFL.

It is time for Eagles to take care of Jackson's renewal and avoid a negative situation. On the hand, my feeling about Rosenhaus is very similar to the ambulance chasers and the "sueyour____.coms". They're SLIME!!!!

I am with you. I think we need more info about the situation before passing any kind of judgement. Maybe he hasn't been contacted by anyone at the organization since the lockout ended. I'd be a little pissed, too, if that were the case, especially when the team has said publicly that they'll take care of him. The Eagles need to tell him "hey, come to camp and we'll get a deal done ASAP. If not, you can leave". The Eagles need to avoid a mess. Without Jackson, they won't even make the playoffs this year. And we know how much the Eagles covet home playoff games.

@mildthing - yes, certainly a fair point. But regardless of what he did that "earned" him a poorer draft slot that he received, he has performed considerably better than his draft slot and contract would suggest expectations were. I'm not saying he should or shouldn't honor his contract, just that he's clearly "worth" a heck of a lot more than what the Eagles are paying, and trying to provide some context about how he ended up with the contract he did.

Once he sees Dion Lewis returning punts, he'll be back. And if they go to two back sets with LeSean and Dion coming out of the backfield to catch passes, with Maclin and Celek running around finding open space upfield...

so perhaps DeSean is a victim of his own antics at Cal? He might have been drafted higher and therefore been slotted higher

@chase26TJ - there's only so much a draft pick can do in negotiating their initial contract. The contracts are more or less slotted based on where you were drafted. He "should have" (i.e. if the draft was done over) been drafted MUCH higher and would have gotten paid much better, but he didn't. So, his contract was reflective of where he was drafted. He has considerably out-performed that contract, but without proving himself first (which he did), there was nothing he could have done at that time he signed his first contract.

Desean is woefully under paid. He he is using the only leverage he has. I just hope the Eagles realize that they have to get it done before this becomes a major distraction. I am feeling less confident about this F.O. making ANY right moves this offseason

Does anyone in football ever honor contracts anymore? Was he forced to sign the previous one? Can someone explain this to me?

Absolutely. His rookie contract really had nothing to do with his talent and everything to do with where he was drafted and his position. So his rookie contract has nothing at all to do with what he did in college. So far, it's safe to say that he's way outperformed his existing contract, and I would also guess that he's outplayed many folks drafted ahead of him. In addition, I'm sure he and his agent can look at previous history and other WRs who've outperformed their rookie contracts that wound up getting new deals before their rookie deal expired.

Stop covering the hold outs...ignore them like they are impudent elementary school children. Rosenhaus' strategy includes an over the top press reaction. Just ignore it...or just continue to play into the hands of one of the slimiest agents in sports.

If he shows up, the Birds will give him the contract he deserves. He's outperformed his previous contract and clearly the Birds don't want to see him in another uniform. If he tries to holdout, they are arrogant enough not to budge(remember TO)

It was supposed to be six weeks and out, but he never left. It is only one of the reasons why so many people have concerns about him as a potential house guest.
