UPDATED: Jennings has slipped far enough that he isn't coming to the green room.

From his agent, Bill Duffy: "Because we do not have a strong grasp of Brandon's draft position, I've advised that he and his family enjoy this day in a more private setting with the people he loves the most. Brandon Jennings will have a very illustrious career in the NBA, and at the end of the day, that is all that is important."

EARLIER:

Up here in NY for tonight's draft. There is no news, only rumor.

Like this: the latest SI.com mock draft has the Sixers taking point guard Brandon Jennings.

It would be a gamble, to say the least, because of Jennings' decision to spend last season in Europe rather than in college. His numbers and his playing time were disappointing. He was hoping to be a top five pick or a top 10 pick. I interviewed him yesterday and he is brash and cocky and all of that. To fall to No. 17 would be a pretty significant comeuppance (or slidedownance). You wonder what the effect would be on such a super-confident kid. Then again, he is super-fast and the Sixers still presumably want to play super-fast under new coach Eddie Jordan. It makes sense that way.

As of Wednesday afternoon, Jennings' plan was to be in the green room -- but he acknowledged being worried about being the last guy in there, and the embarrassment. Maybe he had a sense he was slipping, maybe not. In  the end, he said, "It is everybody's dream, to shake David Stern's hand." At the same time, though, he admitted to "thinking about" skipping the whole thing and hanging with his family someplace instead.

So, we'll see. And if it were to happen, well, a question:  would this mean the Sixers finally have a European player, even if he is from California?

He has shaved the fade since which is a shame, but this would be an awful fit. He's going to need to develop since he played so little last year and he's a jerk. You're better off with a team guy like Maynor, even Lawson would be better.

He's very good - better than Lawson or Maynor or Ellington. I'd be quite happy if the Sixers got him. However, they may be better off making some trades. They badly need a scorer at SG, not to mention an upgrade at center.

NEMark- you're right- his 7 points per game, 20% from 3 in ITALY as a back-up really prove hes a player.

I remember Jamer Nelson being the last guy in that green room. ESPN went to commercial playing cheap tricks song "I want you to want Me" with Nelson looking like someone shot his dog.

Dooby-do is very good and as long as he can play defense and protect the ball in the NBA he will have time to develope with theSixers and he is an all-star in the making. He has an uncanny knack for distributing the ball. His perimeter shot will likely take a couple of years to develope.

Yeah, and I bet there's about 15 teams wishing they hadn't passed on Jameer. Go back and look at that draft and tell me he shouldn't have been a lottery pick. Sebastian Telfair? Luke Jackson? Robert Swift? Kris Humphries? So - you can find a gem at 17 for sure - just have to look for the right qualities (leadership, a winner, and can shoot) instead of being stupid.

About Rich Hofmann
Rich Hofmann arrived at the Daily News in 1980 for a job whose status was officially designated as "full-time, temporary." A senior at Penn at the time, he was hired to fill in on the copy desk during a staff illness. The notion of him covering the Eagles or being a columnist did not exist in anyone's imagination. It was supposed to be six weeks and out, but he never left. It is only one of the reasons why so many people have concerns about him as a potential house guest. Rich has blogged the postseasons of the Flyers and Eagles. E-mail Rich at hofmanr@phillynews.com
