This is generally what happens when you fall behind by 18 points in the third quarter of an NBA playoff game.

This is generally what happens: you lose.

The Sixers survived that deficit in Game 1. This time, there was no miracle. There was only magic; Magic 96, Sixers 87. With that, their playoff series is tied at a game apiece with Game 3 on Friday night at the Wachovia Center.

And if the broad outlines of that 18-point deficit were the same, the games themselves were much different. How different? Well, both Samuel Dalembert and Theo Ratliff had their second fouls with 4:24 left in the first quarter as they fenced with the Magic's Dwight Howard. The Sixers had to go to Reggie Evans at that point, and then Marreese Speights, and the Magic were suddenly having a much easier time getting to the rim.

Then there were Andre Iguodala and Lou Williams, both with big scoring presences in the first game of the series, both held down in the first half (Iguodala with one point at the break, Williams with two).

Then there were the turnovers: 11 at the half, just careless and unacceptable. If Andre Miller hadn't hit 8-for-11 at the break, it would have been a total disaster. As it was, the combination of all of that left the Sixers trailing by 46-39 at the half...and it just went from there.

After a couple of ridiculous Dwight Howard dunks, the Magic lead was 18 points in the middle of the third quarter, just like in Game 1. And then the Sixers came back, just like in Game 1. After cutting it to five, the third quarter ended with the Magic ahead by 70-62. Iguodala began to dominate for the Sixers, scoring 12 points in the quarter.

The Sixers did keep coming. That is to their credit. They cut it to 72-67 with 8:40 to go. Howard had to sit for more than 4 minutes with his fifth foul, and fouled out on an offensive foul with 3:11 to go. The Sixers had their opening. It was 84-79 with 2:56 to go. But it was too far to come back. This is what happens when you fall behind by 18 points in a playoff game.

Miller was great for the Sixers with 30 points. Iguodala had 21 and Thaddeus Young had 20. Howard had a much quieter 11 points for Orlando. The guy who killed them was Courtney Lee with 24, but hobbled forwards Hedo Turkgolu (14) and Rashard Lewis (16) also showed new life.

Big picture, the Sixers got their split on the road and still have the homecourt advantage. But the holes they are digging are too deep. This they now know, too.

BIG PIC comment is right on - they got a split after the first 2 games and that's what matters.

This game was there for the taking.Turk and Lewis are working their way back in shape and will be factors soon.Howard fouls out-but sixers couldnt take care of the ball-would have been nice to come home 2-0 and ORL playing scared.Had the Orlando TV feed with Matty G announcing.Lou Williams"can shoot you in or out of a game"He said it last reg game against ORL and indicated it again tonite. D.M -only 7 minutes/2 shots? Like to see the sixers start the game down 15 then maybe the Coach will give him more minutes. But 1-1 is more then most expected. Sixers have to

Could have had it, especially with Howard in foul trouble and eventually out of the game. Lou playing 28 minutes and scoring 4 points and not getting to the line was a huge disappointment. I still think the Magic can be had. I don't think they have that killer instinct that really great teams have.

We should have won this game. They had numerous plays in which they didn't box out and it cost them extra points. Also, the referring was pretty poor in this game throughout. I was disappointed by that. Overall, the Sixers cannot continue to go down by 18 points and expect to play their way back. This was an exact replica of game one, but the Sixers just couldn't come back from that large of a deficit this time, even though the Magic had no Howard. I think the problem with Howard being out was that the Sixers didn't feel threatened on the boards, so they got lazy, didn't box out, and that's when the Magic hurt us most in the fourth. The Sixers will take game three for sure on Friday night. We'll have to see about game four.

We just can't fall behind by 15 points after 36 minutes every game... Didn't Matt Goukas used to coach the Sixers? It's amazing how incosistent AI is...1 point in the first half? Ridiculous... no wonder he doesn't get the press that some people think he should. Let Thaddeus and Sweet Lou and Mareese Speights continue to develop, and trade Iggy for a lottery pick, if possible (doubt it, though)

How is it that Andre Miller is always taking more shots as a supposed point guard than anyone on the team? Willie Green is characteristically silent? Speights is totally under-utilized at the PF position - if he's ready for prime time, trade Brand for picks. Let AI and Thad play the 2 & 3 with a real point guard dishing, not hogging like the old AI did!

All that matters is the split. Still the Sixers fell in a hole and manage to make a game. Like our chances in Philly! However keep in mind, nobody gives a chance but u still have to play the game.

hey zaituna--somebody's got to take the shots. miller is the only one with the guts to step up and take the big shots. willie green shouldn't be in the league. iguadola is inconsistent at best. williams is a streaky shooter. miller is one of the top 10 point guards in the league. and he plays to win. he's not going to keep passing to guys who don't want to shoot. AI play the 2? 1 point in the 1st half. he's no 2, he's a 3 at best. you need to rethink your point.

Honestly, I was expecting the Magic to blowout the Sixers game 2. We hung in there even though we played horribly in the first half. I think the Sixers have a shot at home. @zaituna Andre Miller is the only reason why the Sixers are in the playoffs. He will score, when nobody else steps up.

2 pts, 0 rebs, 0 blks, & 4 fouls in a little under 9 minutes from the starting center. He needs no introduction. Sit him down, have his corny behind backin up Theo, who is a real center. Tired of this guy. And I never like it when 'Dre Miller takes the most shots, even though he had 30, not feelin him taking the most shots. Igggy need to be aggressive the whole game, not just the second half. I understand Willie is still under contract, BUT DOES HE HAVE TO START?????? We can win this series, but these issues need to be addressed in order to do so.

Hoffman is right on, you can't fall behind by 18 and expect to win twice on a row. But the Sixers could have taken that game last night with a couple breaks. The refs were horrible as usual and a couple bad calls kept the game just out of reach. Am I the only one that thought Ratliff looked great out there? He is obviously fresh and was moving pretty well. With him playing the majority of 2nd half minutes I think we can steal this series. Just keep the clamps on Lewis, Lee won't put up 20 in Philly.

About Rich Hofmann
Rich Hofmann arrived at the Daily News in 1980 for a job whose status was officially designated as "full-time, temporary." A senior at Penn at the time, he was hired to fill in on the copy desk during a staff illness. The notion of him covering the Eagles or being a columnist did not exist in anyone's imagination. It was supposed to be six weeks and out, but he never left. It is only one of the reasons why so many people have concerns about him as a potential house guest.
