After the big comeback, after the Phils erased a 7-0 deficit and beat the Mets by 8-7 in 13 innings last night, Phillies shortstop Jimmy Rollins strongly suggested that some unspecified-but-premature celebration by the Mets worked to ignite the Phillies' rally from oblivion.

"The other team gives you inspiration -- let's put it that way," said Rollins, who had five hits in his first five at-bats in the  game, including a home run. "And when you're able to take that and keep yourself motivated, it helps."

What did the Mets do?

"You've got to watch them," Rollins said.

Something they said or did?

"Just watch 'em," Rollins said. "Just watch 'em. If you were a player, you're looking over in that other dugout, you'll feel a certain type of way...You try to find something on any team, but especially these guys."

Body gestures? Something like that?

"Rewind the game," Rollins said. "Rewind the game."

The other shortstop (Jose Reyes)?

"Just watch the game," Rollins said. "That's all I can say -- watch the game."

Rollins would offer no other evidence. But what clearly is a rivalry between teams that genuinely don't like each other just saw the writing of another chapter.

------------------------------

From a wild night at the Bank:

1) Strategic move of the game was having catcher Carlos Ruiz play third base in the top of the ninth inning, preserving Eric Bruntlett as a pinch-hitter in the bottom of the ninth. Bruntlett cracked the game-tying double. Phils manager Charlie Manuel said he chose Ruiz because he could see the pitcher's spot coming around in the order, and because Ruiz actually had been an infielder as a prospect, way back when. But what you probably didn't see on TV was one of first baseman Ryan Howard's practice ground balls between innings totally flummoxing Ruiz. He knocked it down with his chest.

2) Comic relief came from Brett Myers (.045 batting average) in the bottom of the 13th, sent up to the plate with bases loaded and nobody out under orders from Manuel not to swing the bat. Myers played it up theatrically, including the unfurling of an exaggerated, Sadaharu Oh leg kick. He did everything but wave his arms and scream, "We want a pitcher, not a belly-itcher." But he worked a long count before striking out, and he did not swing. And Manuel said he told him after the at-bat, "You can follow orders."

3) How often have you seen a guy go 4-for-4 in a game that he didn't even enter until the eighth inning? That's what Chris Coste did, including the game-winning RBI in the 13th.

4) Third base coach Steve Smith is on a really hot roll lately with sending guys in tough spots and having it work out. Last night, he was waving Jayson Werth all the way from first on Bruntlett's ninth inning double.

5) Kyle Kendrick was going to be the next pitcher into the game last night, which is a little unusual considering he it tonight's starter against Johan Santana. Kendrick threw 40 warmup pitches and says he is fine and, well, we'll see. But they almost certainly have to bring up a body from the minor leagues for tonight, just in case.

Nutburgers...great name by the way...Ryan Howard's got nothing on Manny's departure from the box. Ryan's only lasts about 2.7 seconds and then he starts jogging. Manny with the bat and all...come on!

We couldn't have beaten the Mets in a more demoralizing way. It was great to see all those looks on those NY fans in the stands dreading the long drive home. Santana has pitched us tough, if we can get another W tonight vs. him thats huge.

how good was this game? the reclinergm lists the 5 heroes of the game, and Eric Brunlett doesn't even make the list! http://www.reclinergm.com/wow-part-2/

Minaya's bunch will fold like a cheap tent for third year in a row because of too many lazy gutless latino's. They all got Willie fired, and all the salsa dancing in the world can't save the bad karma they've created on and off the field. Omar gets the axe in the offseason for sure.

Think the Philly media/fan base is tough? Check out todays NY Post..Wow, they are brutal on the Mets.

I don't know what they did but keep doing it Mutts. So we can go Micael Vick style on them again tonight.

I've said it before and I'll say it again. What Howard does is NOTHING compared to what that bunch of showboaters does. Howard might be a little slow out of the box on a homer, but Reyes' finger pointing at the sky and Tatis' shuffle across home plate are not "spontaneous" - they have time to think about what they're doing and they do it anyway. Same goes for their little fairy dances in the dugout. Nothing the Phils do is even close to what the Mutts do. And you know what's funny? The Mutts keep doing this stuff and it always comes back to haunt them. Why don't they ever learn? And enough with the excuses, New Yorkers, last year you were "bored with winning so easily" and this year it's our "bandbox." Stop choking and you don't have to make excuses.

I would rather the Phillies NOT throw at anyone intentionally. The Mets proved last year what can happen when you incite the opposition (remember the brawl with the Marlins the next-to-last day of the season? remember the score the next day?). I would prefer that if they don't like the Mets' antics, they use it like this, as motivation to win the game, rather than pick a fight. Besides, as has been pointed out here by a few others, the Phillies aren't exactly the epitome of professionalism and old-school baseball "code of ethics". I don't think they are anywhere near as showy as the Mets, but if you are going to invoke those old-school rules, then Ryan Howard does need to run immediately after crushing one the other way, and Shane Victorino needs to tone down his on-field celebrations. Not sure what Jimmy is talking about "in the other dugout"... I always thought that you could do whatever you wanted once back in your own dugout... it's what you do on the field that is a direct public display of your respect, or lack thereof, for the opponent.

Lots of guys like to ride the Cadillac, but the Mets take it to a new level. Reyes does deserve one high and tight now and then. You never want to do anything that gives the other team more motivation to beat you, but the Mets are experts at it.

the "not a belly-itcher" line was a great one rich...i love the phils but it's weird they get mad at other people for celebrating home runs and stuff, but a lot of them have schtick too like victorino when he crosses the plate or ryan howard poses for a second after obvious home runs. that stuff is great but you have to take it if you give it...football players seem a lot more comfortable with that concept. after a strong tackle, a lot of time both people will jaw at each other then break away in begrudging respect.

The 'old school' rivalries are the ones I miss the most. The games of the 70's were the best and they were played with class. Teams like Pittsburgh, Cincinnati etc; not these jheri curl wearing goons who hail from Flushing, New York.

Tatis is pure class. At least he didn't swear at the fans like Mr Utley. Of course, typical Philly fan hates him because he's hispanic. That being said, Mets blow! Go Phils!

I'm not sure what is more fun, watching the Phillies win or the Mets LOSE!!!! Gotta love the look on the Mets fans when they are about to lose the game. Hopefully we will see that again tonight!!

Nutbugers - I wouldn't mind if more pitchers hit Ryan Howard on purpose - that would get him on base and cut down on his K's.

Great blog...no offense to the kid they have on the Phillies beat this year, but he is wet behind the ears and totally overmatched trying to give us the inside skinny on a NE baseball team in a penant race. Anyone else disturbed by the fact that the Phillies need to find some perceived slight to get them motivated? Moyer was due for a bad outing, but it takes showboating by the other team to get these guys on their horse and play hard??! This is a penant race...what more motivation do these millionaires need?

Don't misinterpret this, because I'm 100% behind Ryan Howard, but do you think other teams are particularly fond of him strutting out of the batter's box after hitting a longball? If it weren't so easy to strike him out, I'm sure he'd get hit more often.

I'd love nothing more than for the Phils to be up a few runs late, and have Mr. Showboat come to the plate. Think he'd know what was coming?

sure ... Myers has all of two hits for the whole year. Save him?? You REALLY don't want him to try to pinch hit do you?

I was certain Tatis was going to get hit for his little side skip across home plate....instead the phils used it as motivation to once again hit em where it hurts with a crushing come from behind win! Maybe the Mets will learn something from this...but probably not.

It was a great win. But if you put in Brett Myers to pinch hit for another pitcher and tell him not to swing, can't you just have the current pitcher stand up there and not swing and save Myers (for pinch hitting) in case you don't score that inning?

MVKrum - you're 100% correct, he was out - awful call by the umps. That was a game changing call - because without it, they are only up 3-0 at that point instead of 6.

Love the subtlety, J-Roll. "Just watch 'em." Exactly. You don't have to say anything. The Mets are as classless as their last Tight End up there; same fans, too. Who else in this league celebrates as if they've won the game in the fifth inning? I'll answer that myself: no one but those jerks! Let's go Kendrick and GO PHILLS!

Yeah how about that out at third base when the ball bounced off of (was it Beltran?) and went foul. He was OUT. That would have made a difference. I'm glad the Phillies jumped on the karma train and rode it to victory.

Charlie, man...maybe this guy really knows what he's doing. I hope they pound the Mets tonight. They need to take care of biz against NY, then just keep pace with them. That's it. Scedules are pretty much a push.

Tatis' electric slide across home was ridiculous...as was his batting stance, circa 1998

I am amazed that Tatis has yet to receive a ball to the earhole. Last night was the 3rd time this year he had put on a show for either a hit or scoring a run.

I was pretty irritated when Tatis hit his homerun, when he crossed home plate, he was showboating. I am sure it didn't go unnoticed. However, I was hoping for a fastball in the ribs of one of their players, but stealing a win like that may be even better. Actually - next time, lets do both.
