Reid worried Kolb would be "crucified"

POSTED: Friday, September 24, 2010, 8:42 AM

Andy Reid has different words for different audiences, which isn't a big deal or a big shock. But he tends to explain things differently to national reporters (who almost 100 percent of the time end up taking his side) than he does to the great unwashed here in Philadelphia.

And so it is with Kevin Kolb.

You know what he told us: that this was all about Michael Vick and his unexpectedly great play -- that's why Kolb is now on the bench and Vick is the Eagles' starting quarterback. He said all of that stuff to Peter King at Sports Illustrated, too. King initially criticized the switcheroo on Twitter and then ended up lauding Reid's courage in making the decision. But the interesting part was near the end, when Reid talked about Kolb's "psyche," in King's summation.

Reid is quoted as saying, "A young quarterback needs time to mature as he grows in the game. I don't think Kolb has lost one thing. He's a franchise quarterback. He will win games, and championships, for the Eagles. But I think it's a different deal when you go out there and can't make a mistake or you're going to get crucified, which is the way this thing might have gone if he went back in there now.''

So it's your fault.

Or mine.

Just thought you should know.

Interesting. So it's Vick until the offense gets their act together? Did Reid say it is Vick for the rest of the season so he wasn't asked who would start the next game each week? Kolb did terrible in the first game. If he had a bad second and third game, he wouldn't have been able to recover. Did Reid say that Kolb will not play at all? Is it possible that he'll ease Kolb back in during the season? It puts all the pressure on Vick but Kolb gets the experience. Kolb goes in a few plays and makes a mistake and it's not all on him. If that's what Reid does, it was a very smart move. He can only do something like that if he has a back up who is starter quality. Vick was already playing. Now he'll just play more plays and they switch the mix for awhile.

Franchise QB EH? Their psyche goes like this:Say what you want about me I'm going to gut the next Defense I see. Apparently kolb's a mental midget. You're coach shouldn't have to massage the "franchise!" QB carousel. Brilliant.

So vick's andy's scapegoat? "Can't make a mistake cause he'll get crucified" Sounds exactly what Don went through for 11yrs. He just told us 4yrs ain't enough time to convince Kolb he's good enough. If your afraid to fail, you'll never succeed. THAT IS TRUTH.

Rich,,, Maybe the national guys know something about sports that you guys don't know,, Like anything. Ever think about that ?? Sure makes sense to me. Anyone who thinks that Kolb should start over Vick is watching the game through "race colored glasses", period. There can be no other explanation. Can there??

I liked it better when the sports reporters actually covered the sport aspect. This QB switch for the Eagles has plenty of actual "football-related" implications for the team - will the switch help McCoy's game, Celek's game, how will the switch effect the offensive line's duties, etc? What does Vick add to the offense? What do the Birds lose by sitting Kolb? Might Kolb make a few appearence's (red dog style) to confuse the other teams defense? It seems we could actually be talking about the actual sport here.

But no - it's all about "what Reid said," "how Reid treats the local media" "the timing of the announcements," Kolbs "psyche," etc. I guess that's an easier story to write but it is far less interesting than the game itself. I personally don't care about what Reid said - it may or may not be true anyway. Do you think he's gonna say "Vick is in, partly, because our offensive line can't pass block?" He can't say that (or he's a bad coach, right?) But at least that issue IS football related and maybe the sports writers could go in that direction. It would be nice to read that kind of stuff for a change (instead of the "he said this" - then "he said "that" bs.)

I don't blame Reid, Rich. It is your fault. Time and time again, the national sports media have been the voice of reason while the Philly sports media have been sensationalist and emotional.

One more thing. why's andy got to worry about kk for? It's been an all day suck fest from the media. Excuse making o'plenty. Is AR using reverse psychology on kk. telling him he can't handle criticism. What would you say if the comments were directed at "YOU" You would say:"This guy doesn't trust me when the going gets tough!" So kk's supposed to say: "I know I just beat that bad St Louis team, but next week, that cowboy defense is to tough. I don't want to be crucified. Put MIKE in." What a joke. Just say you made a mistake in drafting him and move on. I'm tired of being force fed:"Is he or isn't he a franchise QB"

There are alot of people who will never give Kolb a chance, so long as Vick was the backup. The man has alot of fans/supporters who would rather watch him run around (it is fun, I'll admit) and have us win maybe 7 games this year (he doesn't play defense or o-line) than develop our franchise quarterback. Now, I'm not saying that Kolb is going to be Brett Favre or Steve Young or whatever. I don't know what Kolb is after 30 minutes of play. And neither does anyone else. Anyone who says they do know are lying. Or stupid. Take your pick. If Jeff Garcia was the backup, no one would have any problems letting Kolb develop this season.

Matthews got to him about 4 times and delivered vicious hits. The protection sucks and ,...bonus...Matthews looked "Jacked". Wasn't his college roomate suspected of "Jacking" too. Welcome to the NFL! Yes, Kolb is shaken, and it's more that concussion....He'll be hearing footsteps for a while. Vick is somehow not threatened by this..,. He can play, run, improvise and score points

I think Kolb is gonna be great and I really don't like Vick at all. BUT- Vick IS playing out of his mind, and the O-line IS a mess. My initial reaction to the move is a negative one- but the more you look at it the more reasonable it looks. That said- here's hoping AR is right that Kolb can handle the emotional part of the benching, because I still think he is the future.

V a fick played with the same line Kolb had and played well, very well. Vick is a pro, Kolb a novice trying to learn the game. Kolb is great in practice because the qb doesn't get hit in practice. He threw 3 dropped interceptions in his half and was turning it over regularly in camp. He can't take the heat and is can't play at the pro level. What everybody is forgetting is he was the 4-5 rated qb in a draft that was a weak qb draft.

While I agree that some local reporters are taking a more personal view recently, it is all still football related and has plenty to do with this whole topic. First, why is Reid telling different stories to different people? Why is there more than one version? And the whole thinking behind Reid's latest decisions is pretty important. What is Reid's objective here? What result is he hoping for or expecting? These are all relevant. Is Reid a crafty and shrewd genius or is he really losing his mind and will do and say anything in trying to keep his head above water?

Bottom Line, Next week is there SuperBowl. They CANNOT lose to McNabb at home. If the eagles lose next week, there never gonna hear the end of it, on how stupid they were to trade him in teh division ect. Thats there dilema. Kolb was all set to start, then they all started think that Vick gives them a better chance to win next week then they believed kolb did. They got scared thinkin well if we let Kold start against the Jags and we win the game, how do we justify tellin him were gonna bench him the following week after winning a game.

sikofit, jamurf's post sound familiar? That's another convert for me...more to follow :) Also agree with you, 4 years and he's still learning? The guy was a 2nd round pick. Enough with the learning curve already. Apparently KK is only allowed to play under optimum conditions unlike his predecessor and Vick who had/have to play with the team they have. I don't feel sorry for KK one bit and that's from a guy who thought KK should have been given his job back.

True enough, Rich. Colin Cowherd's sycophantic interview with the Land Whale on ESPN Radio was typical. Cowherd started off saying to Reid, "Now you're a smart guy ... " and it shot downhill after that. At least you guys are pro enough to ask tough questions and not play the suckup game to keep on the Bloated One's good side (is there one? - and does he even have a side at all, because the guy is built like a medicine ball?) The readers in Philadelphia always bag on you guys, but they don't know how good they have it. I live out in the hinterlands, where the sports reporting is comically horrendous. Keep up the good work!!

Just because you don't have the ability as a reporter (sorry for the false compliment, we all know you're far from a "reporter") to draw an honest response from big red, doesn’t mean you need to take a shot at him. sounds like you're feelings are a little hurt that peter king has more credibility than you, what a shame. the truth is kolb would have been crucified, physically and emotionally, and it would not have been fair to anyone to put him out there as the starter.

There really have been many great reporters and columnists that have come through this city - but i'm so glad the posts in this blog are calling out the current local media for the bickering and complaining over the years of Reid's treatment of them. NOBODY cares what Reid says in his post-game press conferences - we only care about what happens on the field on GAMEDAY. if he makes your jobs more difficult, that's a darn shame. I'm not saying Reid isn't open to criticism, he certainly deserves quite a bit of it. But please grow up and stop acting like petulant children and learn how to cover the game of football. Take a lesson from Gary Cobb and Ray Didinger - study the game, cultivate relationships with other key members of the organization and do some meaningful reporting.

Lost in all this is what kind of QB Vick is. Let'sm face facts: he's a runner that can throw. Look back on his most productive days with nthe Falcons and he was a 2nd tier QB. The Birds have better skill position talent at WR than ATL did but we're talking decision making processes here. Now that he's the announced started things are going to change & defenses around the league will go back to containing him. This seasom was NEVER going to be anything but a rebuilding year anyway, they should have either stuck with 5 or get KK past the growing pains this season. What a freakin' mess......

Isn't Kolb 27? At what point is he no longer considered a "young" QB?

And just as an aside, why does almost every Eagles article have at least one yahoo commenting something like "WHY ARE WE TALKING ABOUT THE EAGLES? WE GOT THE PHILLIES!", or some variation? Are there some people out there that have a brain or fandom that can only focus on one thing? For some wacky reason, I'm able to care about the Eagles and Phillies (and Penn State, for that matter) simultaneously.

Am I missing something here because it is painfully obvious that he is inept at running this team. Andy is the polar opposite of Charlie Manuel. Can you imagine if Andy was the manager of the Phillies, ohhhh myyyy, he would have released Lidge after his second blown save last year, traded Howard and Werth during their slumps for Manny Ramirez or some other criminal and used his infamous "Look this is a business" line and ran the Phillies into the ground faster than he can stuff his face with 10 cheeseburgers!!! Plain and simple REID NEEDS TO GO, he is and was the problem with the Eagles!!! the Eagles are tied for first place this year, and the Eagles have a decent shot of making the playoffs then who knows what could happen. I would rather have that than "developing" a "potential" "franchise QB". The Eagles currently have a young stars at WRs, TE and RB. How often has that happened in Eagles Land? I'll tell you: NEVER. Why throw away whole year when the NFC is wide open? Why, tell me why, please. Are you that racist/idiotic that you hate to see the best athlete and one of guys in the top 5 qbs this year lead this team? The players support him, first of all. I know they love and respect him at this time. Heck, even players from other teams feel that way towards him. Take off the hatred/racist blinders people! Vick gives the Eagles a chance to win now. If Vick flops, yank him and throw in Kolb. If his psyche can't handle that, i don't want his as the EAgles QB for any amount of time!

well said, sedale. i know for a fact there are people on this thread that are backing kolb for racial reasons (i'm a white man). but regardless of that nonsense, the bottom line is that 'love em or hate em', michael vick is an electrifying talent with skills never seen before in this league. whether he has grown up and will become an effective nfl quarterback with the eagles is yet to be seen, but he is too talented to let him sit on the sidelines while we have the best crop of playmakers in recent history on the field (standing wide open, probably, while kevin kolb is laying on his back holding the football). we have a chance to win now [maybe], so let vick do his thing, and if he fails put kolb back in there to "develop". by then the alleged o-line issues will have stabilized and if kolb can't handle the ups-and-downs than that's all we need to know about kevin kolb. The nfc stinks, and even with the issues the eagles have, they are right there in the mix.

with only 6 quarters of playing time, Vick has more passing yards that Favre, Rodgers, Flacco, E. Manning, or Sanchez. He also throws iin 140 rushing yards for good measure, which i don't have to tell you those 5 guys don't have. Just saying, he's not that bad of a QB, u know.

How did Kevin Kolb suddenly become known as BabyArm overnight? Was he given that nickname in college where he threw for 9833 yards and 60 touchdowns? Was he given that nickname last year when he threw for 741 yards in two games? Why did no one notice and comment on his lil "babyarm" during this summer's training camp? Were all the spectators at Lehigh delirious from the wicked summer heat, huhhhh, hmmmmm, OK...What about BabyBrain Reid who calls some of the dumbest plays in NFL history (4th and 10 lets run the ball right up the middle), hmmmm, and what about BabyHeart NcNabb (Let me throw the ball 7 feet above the head of my receivers and then smile widely and pat my chest mouthing "my bad" 10-15 times a game)...hmmmm...I think some Eagles fans have developed a "BabyD**k"!!!

But if you listened to feedback on Kolb throughout camp, it was clear he was regressing for whatever reason. I heard Gary Cobb raise the flag on him after the 2nd preseason game based on his observations in practice, and Cobb’s theory at the time was that since Kolb is such a nice kid and so gracious with the media, he received a pass and criticism was very light. so fans were shielded from how he was really doing as THE guy practicing with the first team.

All of that said, nobody is saying to relegate him to the bench for life. but andy reid put this team in a position where they have a guy like michael vick as a backup, which anyone with a brain couldve projected that this exact scenario would happen. So put vick out there for now, see what he can do, and delay Kolbs development by a handful of games. Seriously, what's the harm? If the harm is to Kolb’s “psyche”, is that really a guy we want anyway? If Kolb is to be a good nfl quarterback, this situation with vick will only make him better and more hungry. And the best case scenario is that Vick has learned how to better utilize his talents, and with a young eagles team make some noise this season. Kolbs time will come later....maybe...

That's your logic? That everyone who doesn't want Vick to start has to be a racist? Keep talking...the more you say the more ridiculous you prove to be! I say again...who mentioned it before you did? NO ONE!

Southjerseymike, In college you might see 1 player every other week, that makes the NFL. NFL is the best of the best. like i've said, its one thing to come in as the BU. It's another to go through training camp as the man. and Don was known for his worm burners. sailed footballs get intercepted. If you don't loose sight of the football on your tv screen, from QB release to WR reception. Tou have a weak arm. kk's ball flight can be seen the whoooooooooooooole way.even the cameras can keep up. Example:hockey player shoots puck. can you see it from stick to goal? potty mouth: try an orbitz. And did you just tell everybody you got a small...rhymes with venus!

...BREAKING NEWS... the Arena league just called AR, inq. about the availability of kk. The GM said "We don't get a whole lot of press clippings around here. Not much pass rush and blitzing is illegal. We believe kk's perfect to be the face of our franchise"

i know for a fact that there is a racist double standard when it comes to this city's athletes - the best and most recent example i can think of is when brett myers came to town a few weeks ago and the positive reception that he received. i was sitting having dinner with people (white, like me) listening to them say how they wished we still had myers, etc, etc. 2 of these same people, on a separate occasion, vowed to never watch the eagles while michael vick is associated with the team. i am a white man, but listening to this double standard makes me really uncomfortable because these aren't people that are racist necessarily, but their thinking is terribly racist in many ways. And that is the type of racist banter I see frequently on these blogs. I’m not accused any one particular person, but it’s a reality.

The bottom line is if you look at Michael vick as a football player (just as a football player), you will conclude that he is best suited to be the quarterback for this team right now. Plain and simple.

Hey sedale, your right with "only 6 quarters of playing time." Its a 16 game season. Start spouting off stats after about week 12. If he's still putting up numbers like that, the Eagles will probably be in first. If not, and he's been known to be hot and cold, they probably won't. By that time he may be hurt for all we know, and these 6 quarters of stats won't mean jack.

The anger, hostility and venom put forth by the reporters and editorial staff (Top Dog headline, REALLY?)of the Daily News leads me to believe that thye have ALOT more inveted in Kolb than just hoping he's a successful QB for the Eagles. Was PD's article the next day reporting or editorializing? Why is Rich Hoffman's feeling so hurt? I love the Daily News sports section but y'all lost some cool points.

on a less confrontational note, heard an interesting piece by jaworski this week - of 44 pass attempts (drop backs) on sunday, vick was hit and knocked to the ground 24 times. on average, peyton manning and tom brady are hit 4 times per game. so all of this banter is moot because if that pace continues with michael vick, he'll be in a coma by the time they get to the bye week. and then all of the kolb supporters will get their wish and he'll get his opportunity.

i can't believe i'm still posting here - this argument is so tired. i guess i really do hate my job.

When a WR beats a DB clean on an short slant and the DB is able to undercut the WR and get a hand on the ball. You have a weak arm. When a team refuses to even call a Deep out or a deep dig or stick. You have a weak arm. When the media proclaims AR's finally has his QB, to run his version of the WCO:3 step drops, short intermediate passes, accuracy, cause Don's big arm isn't here anymore, and then get benched in favor of the bigger armed QB. YOU HAVE A WEAK ARM AND PSYCHE!!!

Well you know, there aren't anymore reporters in Philly, only "Columnists" who don't want to tell you much about football because they'd expose what they know about the game. Anybody seen Bill Lyons recently? We need somebody who will talk about the game of football and not start their own reality shows on the players.

Yo Rich, if you want to be taken seriously as a journalist, then act like a serious journalist. I've been trying to stay out of the whole Kolb/Vick thing, but Andy definitely has a point. Ya'll are like a bunch of high school girls sometimes with all the gossip.

if kolb can't play on the road against a terrible team then reid made a series of mistakes from drafting him through anointing him. kolb should ask for a trade or risk looking like he agrees that he's still not ready and not ever getting the job here. take lurie's money. please.

If the Eagles and Andy Reid don't believe in Kevin Kolb and his ability why did they trade away Donovan and give him a big multiyear contract??? The way I look at it was the season was a wash anyway, the Eagles are not a Superbowl contender this year and that's OK for this year, let Kolb play at least 4-6 games and lets evaluate him fairly as fans...I don't know Kolb well enough as a player to say he's this or that, part of my excitement this year was getting to see if he was any good or not...I know what Vick can do, he can evade tackles and vault over defenders like Randell in his prime, that's fine but it still isn't going to win us a Superbowl let alone a wild-card playoff game. Folks I'm only about talking about what is going to build a championship team when it comes to the Eagles and any of you who think that Vick and BIG BOI Reid are going to do that are drinking high amounts of green Eagles Kool-aid...I want real change, not quarterback change, I want a new head coach and a mean-spirited nasty defense like back in the early 90's, I want to see the Eagles take it to the other teams in the NFL, none of this sissy "We've got a super west coast offense now" nonsense. I WANT TO SEE REAL PHILADELPHIA FOOTBALL AND I WANT A COACH THAT CAN DELIVER THAT!

Were I a coach I'd stiff the Philly press. They had some classy writers, that weren't so negative and wrote sports columns with a twinkle in their eye, a proper perspective for covering an entertainment medium. Most of the the present writers think they're covering city government. Inform us, but make us smile folks. Life is terrorizing. Editors, have you sold out? Or is fanning the flames of irrational and frustrated fans your goal?

Kolb was getting crucified after Vick's performance in the Green Bay game, especially by the black community. If Kolb doesn't fit, you must acquit.....

Here you go , retzlaff: All is right in Eagle land today folks. Not a cloud in the sky. After Coach Reid gave out the milk and cookies, the superb offensive line got together to discuss how they can easily beat any defense in the NFL. QBs Mike Vick and Kevin Kolb led the team in a rousing version of "It's a Beautiful Morning", thuogh some players need to work on their singing skills. After a light walk-thourhg this morning, the Birds will fly the friendly skies to beautiful, sunny Florida where they will join hands with the Jaguars before and after a truly memorable game. Coach Reid will then offer detailed insite as to all the game's plays and wonderful coaching decisions, answering every reporter's question with a bright and cheerful smile. The press all like Coach Reid and ask respectable questions about the players bumps and bruises.

There ya go, retzlaff. Feel better?
