You know how, especially in baseball, they talk about the integrity of the game, and the importance of respecting other teams, and respecting the sport and the pennant race by giving a real effort.

Well, take a gander at what Cubs manager Lou Piniella is doing tonight at Shea Stadium.

Alfonso Soriano, not starting.

Derrek Lee, not starting.

Aramis Ramirez, not starting.

(Apparently there was a split-squad game in Tempe.)

In a crucial game for the Mets, Phils and Brewers, Piniella is sitting 76 homers and 276 RBI. If the Mets don't win this one, there ought to be an investigation.

Yeah, integrity.

I disagree. They earned the right to rest their players. Dont you think Utley/Howard/Burrell would benefit from a few days off? What if one of those Cubs players plays and gets hurt?

If the Phillies won a couple more games this year, this would be a moot point. Anyway, the Iowa Cubs are winning 3-1. Plus, the Phils get to play 3 against a virtual triple A team this weekend.

I agree as well. The Cubbies deserve to sit their starters. Plus they can all pinch hit late if needed. They gotta get this game in before the rain gives Mets a chance late after Harden is done.

Let the Cubs do what they want, as 93phils said, they've earned that right. Phils still control their own destiny.

When you blow away the rest of the NL you can do as you please... I have no problems with it... its a privilege... Didnt their 2B DeRosa get injured last night?

Way to go, Lou...lots of integrity there. When the Phils meet the Cubbies in the playoffs, the lineup for this game should be posted on the Phillies bulletin board to remind the Phils players what a jerk Piniella is.

I agree with Rich Hofmann completely. No one is arguing against Piniella trying to set his team up as best he can for the playoffs. The playoffs don't start for another week Couldn't he have rested one or two guys tonight and one or two tommorrow, etc? He had virtually the entire offensive guts of his team on the bench. Nursing a 2 run lead with two outs in the 8th, he brings in 2 pitchers with Kyle Kendrick stats. Lead lost. When he had the go ahead run in scoring position in the top of the 9th, he can't even send Lee or Soriano or Ramirez up to pinch hit? He lets a couple of bums hitting around the Mendoza line bat.No hits. no run. Game over. Mets win. Regardless of what happens with the Phils over the weekend, I will never be rooting for the Cubs as long as he is their manager after what I saw tonight.

About Rich Hofmann
Rich Hofmann arrived at the Daily News in 1980 for a job whose status was officially designated as "full-time, temporary." A senior at Penn at the time, he was hired to fill in on the copy desk during a staff illness. The notion of him covering the Eagles or being a columnist did not exist in anyone's imagination. It was supposed to be six weeks and out, but he never left. It is only one of the reasons why so many people have concerns about him as a potential house guest. Rich has blogged the postseasons of the Flyers and Eagles. E-mail Rich at hofmanr@phillynews.com
