Phillies on fumes

How tired are they?

Phillies on fumes

POSTED: Tuesday, September 29, 2009, 1:10 PM

As the Phillies limp home, just the facts here.

There are 30 teams in the major leagues. On those 30 teams, there are 43 players who have played in at least 150 games so far this season. The typical team has one, maybe two. The Phillies have six: Ryan Howard (155), Pedro Feliz (153), Jayson Werth (153), Chase Utley (152), Jimmy Rollins (151) and Shane Victorino (150).

Now, look at it since the All-Star break. Fifteen players in the whole entire major leagues have played at least 68 games since the break. Five of them -- one-third -- come from a single team, the Phillies: Rollins, Howard, Werth, Feliz and Utley.

They look tired. They are tired. They need to get this thing settled quickly. They need the time, physically and also mentally.

Just the facts.

I think they should start as many of the reserves as possible tonight. I believe they could win the game with the reserves playing. Give Werth and Rollins the night off and play Fransico and Cairo, play Mayberry etc

Good luck boys....the postseason starts real soon....we all know you can just turn it on whenever you want...oh wait a minute....the Braves might catch you and you might not even get a chance to play in October?.....hmmmm, well gee....sorry about your luck....guess you should have turned it on a little sooner then, huh?

I have tickets for Friday nights game too and could freaking care less if I get to see them clinch. Yea that would be nice but lets not be selfish. We need them to come back to life pronto and then get some rest. I'm looking forward to watching a game full of reserves on Friday.

FOOD FOR THOUGHT AS FAR AS THE BRAVES CATCHING US ** Tonight - Happ, Wednesday - Lee, Thursday - Martinez, Friday - Blanton that takes us to Sat. morning. If for some reason we don't win any of those games and Atlanta wins all of theirs we will be in a tie (90-70) with 2 to play. Cole starts Sat. and Happ on Sunday. With a division tie there are special rules for tie breaker and it comes down to wins in head to head competition, if that is identical then wins in the division. The head to head tie breaker equals out so it will go to best intradivisional record and the Phils win that. The bottom line is take 2 from Houston and you only need to win one from Fla to win it outright.

Here it is Sept. 29 and we're all in a tizzy over the slumping, apparently burned out Phils. There is so much negativity in these blogs, you'd think the Phils were 66-90, not 90-66. Count your blessings. Baseball is a funny, strange game with many cycles and momentum swings. Just as a player looks like he's had it for the year he goes on a hot streak. Just as things tend to go sour, things also miraculously come together. Everyone, players and fans, must keep more on an even keel.

Wally...hope it doesn't come to that but you never know. I'm predicting this weekend's starters to be Kendrick and Moyer.

Man a few of these other web sites are crazy with arguments over 1964 and that collapse which better then half weren't even old enough to remember let alone give a sh**. One thing I think would help this team right now is to start Cairo at short or second over the next 3 games and start Francisco in right for 3 games and give some of these guys who are flat some fire to get back in again. Dobbs would be welcome at third also. I know its wishful thinking but it makes sense to me and maybe the new faces will suprise.

Man would that ever be a touch of irony if it came down to the two cast aways winning it for them. I can just see Dubee looking for a rope to hang himself with.

Man wouldn't that be a touch of irony if it comes down to the two castaways winning it for the Phils. I can just see Dubee now looking for some rope to hang himself with.

Rich Hofmann arrived at the Daily News in 1980 for a job whose status was officially designated as "full-time, temporary." A senior at Penn at the time, he was hired to fill in on the copy desk during a staff illness. The notion of him covering the Eagles or being a columnist did not exist in anyone's imagination. It was supposed to be six weeks and out, but he never left. It is only one of the reasons why so many people have concerns about him as a potential house guest.
