Everybody loved the Eagles' draft. Sports Illustrated's Peter King loved the Eagles' draft. But King has posted an analysis online that walks you through the Eagles' second day draft maneuvering, all of the dizzying trades, and comes to this conclusion:

What would you think if I told you the Philadelphia Eagles got third-, fifth-, sixth- and seventh-round draft choices, plus half a starting cornerback for nothing in this year's draft?

That's right. For free. There are no smoke, mirrors or cheating involved. Only thought and effort.

For moving down six spots in the third round -- eventually taking a player they were considering for that 85th pick anyway -- the Eagles got filthy rich. I am shocked more teams don't run their draft the way the Eagles do. It s almost irresponsible that teams don't do it the Philadelphia way.

"Actually, I'm happy more teams don't,'' said Tom Heckert, the Eagles general manager. "If more teams did, we wouldn't be able to do what we do.''

Traditionally, King loves him some Eagles. He likes the coach, likes the front office. He is spot on here, though, and it is hard to find a cynical counter-argument. It is a thorough analysis of the maneuvering and the conclusion is clear: if Cornelius Ingram really is a player they considered taking in the third round then this was intelligent theft.

Lots of picks are nice, but what counts is how many outstanding players join the team, regardless of whether they are draft picks, college players signed, or trades. And how those players perform together. If the Eagles win the next three Super Bowls, then clearly they've had some good off-seasons. Until then, we can say they're doing pretty well.

The sad thing about Angelo is that he can be a really astute observer of football. Unfortunately, he has become the anti Lurie-Banner-Reid symbol and can't actually make objective assessments. The fact that he persists in criticizing this draft and harrassing those with the opposite viewpoint proves nothing other than he is the "Anti-Eskin". BTW I also hate Eskin and only listen to WIP on weekends. I also loathe Banner and Reid but will admit it when they do a good job. Rhea is not a clown. She is a synchophant.

Ok...so it's official. Football fans are more negative then baseball fans. Wow what a kill joy...How can there be so many pansy-whiny fans attached to such a physical sport.

Yes, the draft was great but I sure wish everyone would stop talking about it. All of this national attention is just assuring that the Eagles go 8-8 or 9-7 and miss the playoffs.

Heard on some sports show that Trotter hurt his knee and was out most of his senior year and fell to the 3rd round. Montgomery fell to the 6th(?), with a bunch of teams saying they wouldn't even take him as an unsigned rookie. Just sayin'.

Have to agree with Ahab...King is not a fan of the Eagles. He has a man-crush on Tom Brady and the Pats, and always talks up the Giants.

It was a great off season. They made some really great moves. Now, the bomb drops when they move McNabb. I think it's coming this year. I don't see them redoing his contract, and he will not play without a new deal.

peter king is a new england fan day in and day out. he's also a very NFL writer who i consider one of the best today. i read him every monday and tuesday on si.com. that said, he proves a point i've made over and over here. this eagle front office knows how to run a business and a pro football franchise including hiring the better coaches, keeping their team young and competative while paying top dollar for excellent players. they have revialized the football picture in philadelphia over the last dozen years. new statium, pratice and admin. buildings, fields and players. these philly writers and some of their comments about the front office are as shallow as their writing. to fans that want to run reid, banner and laurie out of town you should read the history of this franchise prior to the present ownership. if you need further proof ask yourself what general motors assets are and what the eagles assets are. lastly, winning a super bowl is great for about one day. then you have to start winning again which the eagles do constantly year in and year out under reid, banner and laurie.

"This may come out the wrong way, so bear with me. But if I were a football fan looking for a team to root for, I'd pick the Eagles, and what they did on draft weekend is a big reason. The Eagles think. They don't do things the way they've always been done because that's the way they've always been done. For all the frustrations they've given their fans because they haven't won a championship in the 10-year Andy Reid Era, they've done what, as a fan, I'd like my team to do: They give their fans a chance every July at camp time to think they're going to make the playoffs and have a chance to contend for the Super Bowl. Isn't that what you want, as a fan? A chance, every year? What team every year in this decade has given you that chance? Philadelphia. New England. Indianapolis. Pittsburgh. The Giants, maybe." - Peter King.

Great draft, lousy management when it comes to the leaders of the team. I feel that with all thats happened the amount of money needed to sign the heart and soul of the EAGLES was imperative. That the deal for him (DAWK) had to be done. Irregardless of his so called slipping ability. Have they gone blind. Just look at what he did VS. the world champ Steelers when we played them. DAWK I know you will be missed I just pray we find someone with the same heart and soul you bought us. God bless and keep you safe. When your career is over I hope the EAGLES are smart enough to hire you as a coach should that be your career choice.

No one knows if the Birds' dealing was good or not. Three years from now if Peters is a stud, Weaver has a Pro Bowl or 2, Macklin McCoy and Ingram are game breakers, Hobbs is starting or a 3rd corner, and Stacy Andrews is a quality starter and helping his brother regain PB form, then it was a great preseason. We shall see.....

The Eagles did a great job in getting value in this draft. There was no way more than 3-4 drafted rookies would even make this team so why waste the picks? Instead they got players who are likely to help this year in the draft. They also got a starting left tackle in Peters AND a starting-quality corner in Hobbs for a late 1st, a late 4th, and two 5th round picks. Add in the Andrews and Weaver signings and I'm not sure there were any moves the Eagles missed that were available and would have improved the team.

i hate when people bi%%ch about the superbowl when we are just giving props on a great draft. great thing about the draft is when u finally do build a champion, u may have built a dynasty that gets a few...so relax people and enjoy a job well done....and sheldon...you keep it up and you might turn into picks real quick!

the injury and the fact he is still a bit raw..still more of a bball player, very athletic. he should de well in the league bc the eagles do a great job of developing talent. look at all the players we have had that didnt even belong in the league...eg buckhalter, ljsmith...we get the best outta young athletes. pettigrew is an offensive linemen that poses no mismatch problems (so glad we didnt grab him) and jared cook from sc is a beast..big, strong and runs like a deer. we got a great weapon, 2nd best te prospect that late in the draft. macho is an nfl corner and dont forget last year's pick jack ikeguonu is healthy.great job...philly hopefully the days of shawn bradley and mike mamula are over

i have to tell you if the eagles invented a new role on the sideline - gameday coach -- and hired someone who could adjust to the flow of the game very well -- they would be unstoppable. Reid/Morningweig/Childress are all below avg at this and it costs the birds a few games a year and always ends their playoff drives. reid does the other parts of the job really well.

Everything King said is true, unless the Eagles targeted TE Casey from Rice, who was taken ahead of where they picked. If he turns into an all-pro, and Dr. Cornelius flames out in two years, they will look like they outsmarted themselves.

Peter King also LOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOVES Cheescake! Although I liked the draft. I'm cool with the Eagles trading, just not out of the first round two years in a row. Trade all you want from the third on down. That being said Angelo and company may be the lowest form of entertainment there is, they aren't funny but they make up for it by being misinformed......constantly!

People slide in the draft, I can't believe I have to explain this. Sometimes people get drafted in the first round and they never pan out. This is what I like to call a bust. Some examples are Vince Young, Rick Mire, Tim Couch, the list keeps on going just go back and look at the past drafts. I for one have to agree Rhea stinks, hopefully she has her baby and becomes a stay at home mom and we the listners will never have to listen to her disrespect people who give their time to the show. For example when she was screaming at Joe Banner. I was embaressed for her. She needs to get her facts straight and ask questions like a lady should.

How come all the Philly writers and radio talk show hosts were scooped on this by Peter King? They had a week to analyze. Stop worrying about whether McNabb will talk to you and start reporting like you are supposed to do!

Some people also started rumors that Ingram's knee was still hurting and so with a lot of other TEs in the the 3rd-5th round range, some teams got scared off and didn't want to take a chance. The Eagles and the Pats always do the best job of maneuvering in the draft to pick up extra draft picks.

This analysis is flawed. They could have gotten Ingram in the 5th whether they used their 3rd or not. Therefore, what they traded for all this "free" stuff is whoever they could have drafted in the 3rd round - like Rashad Johnson from Alabama.

yes, the eagles do a great job of hording picks...because after being under the salary cap, hording picks is their second greatest obsession... the eagles offseason was solid, but it was still aimed at being solid for future years, not for trying to win it all this season...

Ingram dropped because of his knee. If he recovers fully and stays healthy, then it's a hit. High risk, high reward. Great pick for the birds because they have a capable tight-end, but they may have picked up a game changer.

Imagine if one of our local writers had done that kind of analysis. But that would take effort. It's way easier to just transcribe whatever some miffed player has to say. Or just copy and paste analysis from a national writer.

If Cornelius Ingram is so great then why did none of the other 29 teams take him through 4 rounds? This is like Winston Justice "falling" to the 2nd round....maybe the Eagles value players alot higher than other teams.

These moves within the draft are good and all, but the fact remains that untill picks actually pan out, it dosen't matter. Case in point is this Maclin kid, I always agree with picking the best available instead of need, so naturally I like the pick, but then I like the Mamula pick also. Thats why they either sink or swim when they play...
