Everybody loved the Eagles' draft. Sports Illustrated's Peter King loved the Eagles' draft. But King has posted an analysis online that walks you through the Eagles' second day draft maneuvering, all of the dizzying trades, and comes to this conclusion:

What would you think if I told you the Philadelphia Eagles got third-, fifth-, sixth- and seventh-round draft choices, plus half a starting cornerback for nothing in this year's draft?

That's right. For free. There are no smoke, mirrors or cheating involved. Only thought and effort.

For moving down six spots in the third round -- eventually taking a player they were considering for that 85th pick anyway -- the Eagles got filthy rich. I am shocked more teams don't run their draft the way the Eagles do. It s almost irresponsible that teams don't do it the Philadelphia way.

"Actually, I'm happy more teams don't,'' said Tom Heckert, the Eagles general manager. "If more teams did, we wouldn't be able to do what we do.''

Traditionally, King loves him some Eagles. He likes the coach, likes the front office. He is spot on here, though, and it is hard to find a cynical counter-argument. It is a thorough analysis of the maneuvering and the conclusion is clear: if Cornelius Ingram really is a player they considered taking in the third round then this was intelligent theft.

I happen to agree with him, but Peter King has never been much of an Eagles lover. In fact I suspect he wrote this just to draw traffic to the Eagles charity package for Dr Z he mentions later in the column.

bring on the negadelphians who will scream we should have traded our draft away for Anquan Boldin who nobody else was trying to trade for anyway!

These moves within the draft are good and all, but the fact remains that untill picks actually pan out, it dosen't matter. Case in point is this Maclin kid, I always agree with picking the best available instead of need, so naturally I like the pick, but then I like the Mamula pick also. Thats why they either sink or swim when they play...

If Cornelius Ingram is so great then why did none of the other 29 teams take him through 4 rounds? This is like Winston Justice "falling" to the 2nd round....maybe the Eagles value players alot higher than other teams.

ya great draft. The draft and manuvering in FA and the trading has always been a strong point for them. means nothing if it doesn't translate into a superbowl. Bring it home already!

Ingram will contribute right away. FL is no slouch as a team.

Give the front office an E for Effort, tremendous effort actually. But it needs to translate into success which is measured by wins.

Imagine if one of our local writers had done that kind of analysis. But that would take effort. It's way easier to just transcribe whatever some miffed player has to say. Or just copy and paste analysis from a national writer.

Ingram dropped because of his knee. If he recovers fully and stays healthy, then it's a hit. High risk, high reward. Great pick for the birds because they have a capable tight-end, but they may have picked up a game changer.

The expression is "A for effort." Why would you give someone a grade of E?

If Ingram is healthy he will be a stud, He didnt get picked early bc 9 Tight ends went before him and teams didnt want to take a chance on a guy who missed a whole year. we could afford to do that.
About Rich Hofmann
Rich Hofmann arrived at the Daily News in 1980 for a job whose status was officially designated as "full-time, temporary." A senior at Penn at the time, he was hired to fill in on the copy desk during a staff illness. The notion of him covering the Eagles or being a columnist did not exist in anyone's imagination. It was supposed to be six weeks and out, but he never left. It is only one of the reasons why so many people have concerns about him as a potential house guest. Rich has blogged the postseasons of the Flyers and Eagles.
