Jamie Moyer spoke his mind on Tuesday.

This is good.

Moyer said he was "disheartened" by the decision to yank him out of the Phillies' starting rotation. He said he had been "misled" during off-season contract negotiations with the club, when this kind of scenario was raised and he was assured he would not be banished to the bullpen. Moyer also said he would not be a distraction.

There are people who see all of this as inconsistent. I don't, not even a little bit.

I continue to be amazed by media people who ask questions for a living who are horrified when the answers are truthful. It's absurd. I ask people things and I want to know what they really think. I don't want robots. I don't want coach-speak. We have all spent such a large portion of our lives listening to athletes say nothing that, when somebody actually does say something, there are people who recoil.

Of course he's disheartened -- and there is nothing wrong with saying it.

If he feels he was misled, there is nothing wrong with saying that either. Because there are promises and there are promises and everybody knows it. The Phillies promised Chan Ho Park an honest competition in spring training for a spot in the rotation and they gave him the job because he won it. That's honorable. This is a little different because of Moyer's elevated earned-run average. At 5.47, it's about as bad as a starter can possibly have and remain a starter. And know this: at a certain point, everyone would agree -- hell, Moyer would agree -- that an exorbitant ERA would cancel any off-season conversation. So we are just talking about the definition of exorbitant.

One final thing: he will not be a distraction. Because making a single newspaper headline is not the same thing as dividing a clubhouse. Moyer won't do that -- he just won't. It isn't in his DNA and, frankly, it isn't within his power. Because while the man is universally respected, the numbers are the numbers, and 5.47 is 5.47, and everybody in the Phillies' clubhouse can see that.

forget this article, Brad Lidge has no business being the closer anymore. I'm sick of watching him stink up the 9th, here's another loss for us tonight. Here's hoping for a speedy recovery for Brett Myers, our closer for the postseason if we even make it that far.

Rich the two beat writers columns have 100s of comments which can only be described as a disgraceful display of pure hatred against Moyer. Considering the fact that Amaro created this situation, being fully aware of what Jamie’s contract contains he also bares responsibility for what is happening to Jamie. There are many things you can say in favor of, or against, Moyers performance this season, but there is nothing I have seen to allow him to be crucified publicly like this, via the efforts of these irresponsible beat writers.

Give Jamie a shot at Bad (oops, I mean Brad) Lidge's spot until Myers returns. Another great performance tonight by the "closer".

Lidge needs another 2-3 week stint on the DL. Myers needs to get healthy quick and dust off that closer mentality while he's at it. Looking like a repeat of 2 years ago with him.

Rich Dubee ruined Brad Lidge. he is the worst pitching coach in baseball. Another blown save tonight.

I have no problem with Moyer saying he feels 'disheartened' ... that's natural ... but if he's going to start saying things like he feels 'misled' by the management, he should also own up and admit his performance this year hasn't exactly been up to snuff. Management could also say they feel misled by Moyer's performance last year when they gave him a 2 year deal expecting the same results this year.

Right now, this means zip. The team is in huge disarray. Bases loaded over and again in the last few days, and zip. Lidge blows another one and the team cannot hit. Jaime is the least of their problems. Wait till Pedro gets lit up Wed. Discouraged is not the word.

Wait a minute. Disheartened is fine. That's honest. But you can't have it both ways. Either he was "misled" (which he says he was) or he knows the difference between promises and promises. You even said "everyone would agree--[sic], even Moyer would agree". He can't be both misled and know that having the second worst ERA trumps any off-season conversation. Disheartened = honest. Misled = dishonest. JM is a good guy. But untruth is spoken by good guys from time to time. The downside of all of this is not this little bru-ha-ha. Its that commiting the $$$ to Moyer effectively limited the Phils from running hard a Lowe. How would you like a Lee, Lowe, Hamels, Blanton, Happ rotation right now? Remember, the Phils have $20 million plus of pitcher salaries (Myers and Eaton) coming off of the books after this year. Add in Moyers $6/7MM and it doesn't take a rocket scientist to know that we could have had 2 of the following: Lowe, Lee, Halladay. Sleep on that.

Totally agree that Jamie can say he is disheartened by the decision, but what purpose does bringing up offseason "promises, not promises" have at this time? Also, according to another report, he sat alone and then called the media over to make these special comments. No, Jamoe certainly could have left it as him being disheartened. He also could have acknowledged that he put the Phillies in sort of a no-win situation by pitching so poorly this year. If he truly has his teammates in mind he would want them to have the best possible chance at winning, which at this moment means he can't be in the starting rotation. At the same time, as Charlie would say, the Phillies cannot continue to run Lidge out there just to blow another save. Just as it is a 90% certainty that Ryan Howard will strike out when he has two strikes, Lidge blowing a save this season feels like a 90% certainty. Just as Jamie has been taken out of the rotation because of his poor performances, how long does Lidge deserve to contnue "working it out" while the Phils continue to lose games?

Just release him or trade him to Washington. It was a bad signing last year...an emotional decision not a logical one.

About Rich Hofmann
Rich Hofmann arrived at the Daily News in 1980 for a job whose status was officially designated as "full-time, temporary." A senior at Penn at the time, he was hired to fill in on the copy desk during a staff illness. The notion of him covering the Eagles or being a columnist did not exist in anyone's imagination. It was supposed to be six weeks and out, but he never left. It is only one of the reasons why so many people have concerns about him as a potential house guest. Rich has blogged the postseasons of the Flyers and Eagles. E-mail Rich at hofmanr@phillynews.com
